About Mari Carmen Martinez

English & Spanish couple living in Madrid that fell in love with Samana!

Mari Carmen Martinez purchased this condo in 2012

Why Mari Carmen Martinez chose Las Terrenas

Samana, the region, is more than just a beach. It has waterfalls, an amazing national park visited by humpback whales each year, amazing birdlife. Las Terrenas town is laid back, verging on shabby chic. A curious mix of French & Italian vibes with the Dominican's fabulous culture. Lots of smiling faces. The French so love the place they have been living here for 20 years and even set up their own school....they have the French Caribbean to choose from and yet they choose Samana. Makes you wonder, right?

What makes this condo unique

Balcones is located outside Las Terrenas town and our Penthouse is a property that gives all the creature comforts and sense of security one would expect. Belongs to a gated community, built and managed by Dominican Republic's largest and most established construction company as a club for discerning, cosmopolitan & demanding Dominicans.

GREAT PROPERTY, WONDERFUL VACATION AT BALCONES!

  • 5 of 5
This penthouse at Balcones del Atlantico in Las Terrenas is spectacular! The apartment surpassed our expectations, everything was immaculate and well decorated. Balcones is very nice (resort style, beautiful gardens, swimming pool, etc) and the beach is beautiful! I recommend to rent a car or a four wheel at Terrenas to move around. There are supermarkets in the village to buy groceries and also there are plenty of restaurants to eat but are not at a distance that you can walk from Balcones (only one restaurant at Balcones). This is better since Balcones is more private and away from the noise and activity of the village or "Pueblo de los Pescadores" (Fishermen's village is how the locals call the heart of the village). We stayed from Thursday to Sunday and enjoyed so much our vacation that my family wants to go back and spend more time at Las Terrenas, it's a paradise. The owner provided an excellent customer service sending all the information we needed regarding the apartment and she was always in contact with us. We did not have any problem getting back our deposit. We definitely would rent this apartment again and we already recommended to our friends and family members.

Beautiful and well appointed apartment

  • 5 of 5
The Apartment is beautiful and spacious. We went to Las Terrenas for a family vacation and it was wonderful. Part of that wonderful experience was coming back to a very nice apartment at the end of the day. All the furnishes were comfortable and we all woke up refreshed (good bedding). Communication with Mari Carmen (owner) was excellent. Ramona (maid) was a very valuable help during our stay, she was very helpful, kept the place clean and organize and even cooked for us 2 fabulous meals. Security 24/7 was also very much appreciated. The beach across the street is not the best but there are many wonderful beaches close by. We hope to be back soon.

In very few words: This was our second visit, we will come back this year, we have recommended it to all our friends and coworkers.
Some of them will go this year as well.
We feel very comfortable with the owner, she is awesome, very responsive and helpful.
The property is great, very relaxing.
That is why we gave it 5 starts.

Peaceful Luxury

  • 5 of 5
This property is stunning though pictures don't even begin to capture it. I traveled with 2 adult family members for our birthdays {all 3 of us} and we had the time of our lives. It was low season and the perfect time to go as June is a very dry month here so not much rain. Inside, the penthouse is spacious and spotless with luxury touches throughout...granite, tile, professional appliances, lots of fans, comfortable furnishings, firm beds. The A/C in bedrooms was nice, too. Shopping is easy at Lindo Mercado in town and I loved cooking in the very gourmet-supplied kitchen. We enjoyed dinners and cool breezes on our terrace. Porto restaurant was a quick walk through the garden area to the beach. Very good food, excellent attentive service. Upstairs, our private "rooftop" offered a whole other living space and dining area--covered yet open air--and included the private hot tub with gorgeous views of the ocean, especially beautiful in early morning. El Portillo beach was breathtaking, nearly secluded, less than 80 yards from the home. There's a beach hut with free snorkel gear and kayaks. I appreciate that security men were everywhere but I never saw anyone even remotely threatening and we felt very safe. We booked private tours through "Tour Samana with Terry" for nearby El Limon Waterfall and a zipline excursion and they picked us up so no need to drive there. {They were also FABULOUS & spoke great English}. We also booked a boat ride tour through Las Haitises National Park, definitely worth exploring caves and islands. Ramona, the housekeeper, was friendly and thorough but does not speak any English and giggled at my poor Spanish. We really loved how quiet and peaceful the place was but perhaps it's because of low season. Mari, the owner, is very responsive and went out of her way to help make this a perfect trip for us, even emailed me after check-in to make sure everything met our needs & expectations. I could not have asked for a better experience. {Note: If driving Highway 5 to here, you will need 500 pesos for toll to enter the road. We didn't exchange enough & the guards were armed extortionists who took $20 in American money & offered no change.}

Best March Break Vacation

  • 5 of 5
This is a beautiful, luxury penthouse in Balcones del Atlantico, in the lush Samana Peninsula in the Dominican Republic. We flew direct from Toronto with WestJet but Air Canada flies as well. We decided to forgo the usual all-inclusives as we were sick of the bad behaviour of the other guests. Accommodations: The place is unbelievable! We all gasped when we opened the door - very spacious and tastefully decorated. The Grounds: There are two pools; the closest one has a kiddie play area which connects to a deeper pool. The second pool is deeper and meant for adults. Both are surrounded by loungers. Everything is beautifully maintained, lush and gorgeous. At reception is very good, new gym, open 24 hours. There is a basketball net just outside of the gym and the ball is at reception. There is a computer with free internet access at reception, as well as free wi-fi both there, and at the pool areas. The Beaches: El Portillo beach is across the street from the hotel grounds and there are always security guards to help you across the street safely. If you like to walk along the beach
Our favourite beach and the one we went to twice, was Playa Coson. It is a bit of a drive but prepare to go for the entire day, as it’s well worth it. We brought towels, sunscreen, bottles of water and cash. Follow the sign that says “Restaurant Luis” and pull into the parking area. Help yourself to a beach chair and enjoy the gorgeous view. The waves are absolutely incredible and unrelenting; superb for body surfing. When you start to get hungry, mosey to the back of the restaurant and choose a fresh fish out of the cooler. It will be weighed, cooked and brought to your table with fresh cut and fried potatoes, rice, beans, and salad. It is absolutely delicious! For those who don’t like fish, you can have an equally delicious BBQ chicken. Again, if walking on the beach is your thing, you can go forever. Eating: Because this lovely place has a fully equipped kitchen, we actually cooked at home more than we normally would on vacation. We did go to “Porto”, the hotel restaurant a few times – they have the BEST Mojitos. I wrote much more in my review in Trip Advisor - I can't fit it all in here In General: The little town has an interesting array of shops where you really need to dig to find what you want, but it’s always worth it! If you like interesting jewellery and quirky items made of recycled items like old LP’s made into purses, go into “Recyle Arte” in town

Great vacation - simply perfect location!

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed at Balcones del Atlantico in Las Terrenas, inside the Samana Peninsula. The vacation was exactly what we were expecting. Since we were there right after DR’s spring break, we missed the crowd of vacationers that comes down from DR, and it felt like a private beach/resort. The beach area that we can access via Balcones is beautiful. Porto, the restaurant on site, is delicious. We did a lot of cooking while we were there because the apt has a great kitchen, but managed to try Chef Bruno’s ceviche – it was spectacular. If you go, don’t miss Playa Bonita (about a 10-min drive from Balcones) – it was one of the most pristine beaches I’ve ever seen. Also, check out the town – it’s very quaint! We bought fish from the local fisherman in “casa blanca” – it’s up the street from balcones, right on the sand, and they’re there from 8am till about noon (the earlier you go, the better selection you have). they skin it and slice it for you and are great prices – we bought mahi mahi, lobster, and snapper…delicious! Also, check out the Limon waterfall, and go with Maria y Miguel…for about $30 USD /person, the tour includes roundtrip horseback ride to falls and back, and a delicious lunch! Overall, Balcones was a great experience and just the type of relaxing vacation I needed!

Balcones acts as a club for wealthy Dominicans that arrive at their luxury turnkey apartments for the weekend from the capital 2 hours drive away. This wouldn't have been possible a couple of years ago as it was a 6 hour drive away but thanks to a new highway it's now ''weekend-able''. What does that mean? Well, 2 things --- 1. wealthy Dominicans are quite demanding and want top end tasteful surroundings, furnishings and finishing so you stand to benefit 2. the region is unspoilt because it was so isolated until recently.

As well as the beautiful, kid friendly beach on the doorstep, there are 2 more great beaches on the other side of town 1. Playa Coson with its rollers - good for getting the salt in your hair. Don't miss lunch at Casa Luis - basic but great fish. 2. Playa Bonita again with decent waves and lots of restaurants on its boardwalk. Nighttime in Las Terrenas will probably see you end up at Pueblo de los Pescadores at least one evening - very laid back, great selection of restaurants, no heavy sell. Almost forgot, if you are looking to cook certain meals, then you'll be glad to know there's a couple of supermarkets stacking a large selection of imported foodstuffs

The Samaná región is much more than just beaches. Rent a car and get around. From mid Jan to mid March the humpback whales visit the peninsula and you can take boat trips out and get up close to these amazing creatures. The trip also typically takes in the national park ‘Parque de los Haiteses’ and Cayo Levantado. El Limón waterfalls are also nearby. Activities wise, if you like sports fishing, it’s easy to hire a boat and captain for a half day’s fishing trip from several point along the pensinsula. Other fun pasttimes include dinghy sailing, surfing and kite surfing so please don't hestitate to ask reception to point you in the right direction.

Just wanted to finish the description of the region with a mention of the village of Las Galeras and its idyllic beach, Playa Rincon, reached by small boat. Definitely worth a visit, and our suggestion for lunch would be El Cabito - perched on a sea-cliff with spectacular views.
