Notes: Very private year round cottage located on Lost Lake in Mecosta County near Barryton, MI. One of 9 lakes in the Martiny Chain of Lakes, including Lost Lake, Tubbs Lake, Big Evans Lake, Lower Evans Lake, Upper Evans Lake, Saddlebag Lake, Boom Lake, Bass Lake, and Dogfish Lake (1700 acres of water). The Winchester Dam was built in 1955 on Tubbs Lake as part of the Martiny Chain Of Lakes project. This project raised the water levels by more then 8ft. over 1600 acres of the Martiny Lakes State game area, thereby connecting all the lakes. Some fishermen say that some of the best fishing is found in the Martiny Chain of Lakes. Bass, Bluegill, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Warmouth, Pumpkinseed, Black Crappie, Bullhead and dogfish are abundantly found in the Martiny Chain of Lakes. Much of the lakes' frontage is in the state game area which prevents it from being developed, giving home to deer, raccoons, beavers, otters, bear, wood ducks, nesting osprey, loons, herons, bald eagles, mallards.

Peaceful, relaxing and secluded

5 of 5
Submitted: April 17, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
My boyfriend and I wanted a nice weekend away from the city. I left him on charge of finding something quiet, secluded, relaxing and fairly inexpensive. Leaving this up to him seemed risky, but he really came through. This cottage was absolutely what we were looking for. Not only were Don and donna genuinely wonderful people, but were gracious and accommodating. My boyfriend (who lovingly agreed to take me away from the city, and civilization for that matter) was able watch all of the NCAA games his heart could contain (they have satellite dish)while I was able to catch up on reading and not have to think about work.
Our trip took place in the dead of winter, so boating and fishing was out of the question but we were still able to occupy ourselves with nature walks close by, sunsets over the (very frozen) lake and just spending time with each other.
I would definitely recommend picking up groceries and toiletries in the larger towns on your way in, as the closest gas station is quite far away, but there are small stores for last minute or emergency items if needed.
I have personally recommended this cottage to a few friends in need of a weekend away, and I'm truly looking forward to spending time here in the warmer months.
Now for technical things: take their advice and don't use Siri or GPS to get there, follow their directions-your in the middle of nowhere. It took us some time to find on our own and think "is it really this far back"? Yes, yes it is. Also, I assure you they have plenty of hot water ;). Don and Donna have supplied a full kitchen, with nearly everything you need to cook a full meal, so need not worry about basic essentials. We were shocked that there was nothing we needed extra for cooking while there (blender, aluminum foil, wine bottle opener etc.). Great looking grill outside and pontoon boat, rafts for the water and a beautiful full deck in the back. You will not be disappointed. Don and Donna also include a nice binder with restaurants in the area ( with their menus) and other useful information.
We loves our stay at this cottage and cannot wait to go back. Highly recommended. Thanks so much again Don and Donna

Comfortable & quiet...Exceeded expectations

My family was looking for a place, over spring break, not far from home...and when we found this place, we knew the rate was easy on the budget, but we didn’t really know what to expect..

The cottage was great, it exceeded our expectations. It was comfy & clean and well kept. We cooked and grilled, and they had everything we needed. And we had room for the four of us.

We played board games...and sat on the deck and watched beaver build a damn...and the blue heron and geese on and over the lake. It was exactly what we were looking for...A place to just chill & relax, and be together away from home. We look forward to returning in the summer months.

Just an overall comfy stay!

Cabin fever sets in easily in Michigan. That's why we booked Sunset Cottage, to get us out of our own 4 walls and on the lake & ice fish.

This place offered everything we needed for that. The weather didn't cooperate for the fishing, but having our baby grandson with us made it all worthwhile. The open concept living area made it easy to visit. A huge master bdrm was impressive. The bright & airy feel of the sun off the lakeside (though froze over) did wonders to kill the cabin fever. An extra bonus was watching the 3 does cross over the ice one afternoon. That was a big hit w/the group. Dish network helped us pass the time, as did the well stocked dvd & game closet. The price was very reasonable. Owners were pleasant to deal with & very accommodating. Thanks Dana & Don We will indeed revisit this summer to explore the open waters w/our kayak.

The cabin was perfectly clean and laid out with all the amenities that one would need or want. The owners went over and beyond what you would need to have a perfect time there for your stay. I am and will be recommending the property to friends and family. I can not wait to come back again as soon as I possibly can.
