St Paul Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

One of Afton's Original Homes nestled in St. Croix River Bluffs in Kelle's Coule

Kelle's Coullee

13 private acres - 5 minute walk from Afton Village

natural beauty. site.

Many visitors feel they might be lost when driving down the 1000 foot driveway to our sweet home nestled in the coulee. Although right outside of Afton Village, the private driveway winds between tall bluffs on the left and a small creek on the right...before revealing a large grassy lawn and the home.

This home was built in 1900, and renovated extensively in 1990.

I've been told it was a originally a farmhouse but the farm must have been small! I do know that it was once owned by Mike Kelly, the owner of the Minneapolis Millers (1940s? professional baseball team) and he used it for his summer cottage. Back then he had two professional gardeners. You will notice that gardening is not my forte but the natural setting is fortunately stunning.

The home rests on 13 acres; two or so are lawn, and the remainder include tall almost-mountains, bluffs and winding creek beds. Feel free to explore, or sit on the porch in peace and seclusion. ... or walk the ten minutes to the small town of Afton, the beach or marina, or a 20 minute drive to St. Paul.

The home is modest but with large open spaces for entertaining Large dining room, open kitchen. Three full bathrooms.

If you request a date more than a couple of months out, I may decline because I need to be sure of my own schedule prior to booking yours.

The home is very nice, but keep in mind that it IS an older home (and it's a home, not just a vacation rental- me and/or my family do sometimes actually live here)- so think more 'cabin up North' than McMansion with all the amenities, and while I do my best to keep everything tidy and clean, it's always harder in an older home. I am currently renovating the shared bathroom; it should be complete by April. In the meantime-- well it has seen better days but is very usable. There is Air Conditioning, WiFi, small stereo, wall TV with Netflix (and sometimes cable), and whatever good company you can bring! Lots and lots of outdoor activities.

OF course there is a wood burning stove in the living room so in winter you will want to snuggle up with a book (you can read any of mine) or your computer.

Two primary bedrooms include a queen size bed in the large lovely light loft, and full bed (for two) in original house portion. There are other rooms available with single beds if needed. Lots of parking space

We also have a cat.

You are welcome to bring a dog if it's a good one.

Other special requests? Let me know and we'll see what we can do. Hope you love this place as much as I do.... I raised my family here, live here but vacate the premises when I have guests.

I keep the house uncluttered, dressers and closets are cleared for your use, and I make sure the house is as clean as I can make it before your arrival...... I am neat but not fastidious so you may see some cobwebs, windows that need cleaning, other smudges that have somehow been missed. I am not trying to scare you off, but if you are a particular neatnick you might not be happy here. On the other hand, you won't have to worry quite so much while you're here, either.

About Erin McDowell

(NOTE: The photo is one of the few I had on my computer. That is NOT my home. It is, in fact, Hobbiton, which isn't even a real place- being where Hobbits live (Lord of the Rings). The photo is from a trip I took to New Zealand. My daughter-was taking a school semester there--- and really really really wanted to see the movie set.) Sorry to say, you won't get the pond or the nice thatched mill that is in the background of my photo)

I work at 3M which is 20 minutes from this property; love to travel, and really enjoy the outdoors, including visiting State Parks (I visit the one in Afton every week!), biking (you can borrow my two bikes), skiing. I have two daughters who are now away from home. Love pets, have a cat which stays at this property but stays out of the way. He is sleek, black, Manx and name Severus.

Erin McDowell purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

Why Erin McDowell chose St Paul

We moved to Minnesota from the Washington DC area. We loved that area because of it's cosmopolitan nature and proximity to Chesapeake Bay and the ocean.

I was hesitant to move to Minnesota because I thought it was all flat (I had no idea! and I was young) but this property was the deciding factor. When my husband and I walked into this house, the headache I brought in melted away. It's a very relaxing spot. AND it's right by the St. Croix River. We have spent many many weekends on the river or on the beaches with our small children. It's clean, warm, slow.

Hi Erin,
Thanks for the chance to stay at your home in Afton. We all had a wonderful time. The location is quiet and very relaxing. Our children loved playing with kitty and we loved the easy access to St. Paul and the St. Croix trail for running to Hudson WI and back for the marathon training. Your accommodations were much larger than pictured and worked well for our party of 5. Thanks so much for having the coffee pot ready to brew and items for breakfast.

We're not in Minneapolis anymore, Toto.

I took my family out for the weekend and stayed in the "big house" further up the road from the cabin. Amazed as we tuned off the main road and wound through the bluffs bordering the coulee. It reminded me of a canyon in the Laramie Range of Wyoming.
We met Erin, the owner, who told us the history of Kel's Coulee. She was exceedingly welcoming and had the house well set for our stay, including trail maps of all the local areas. In fact there was a whole wilderness path just out the back door which wound up the canyon.
The farmhouse was spacious with well-kept hardwood throughout. There was a beautiful Franklin stove for use in the winter months, also some modern amenities like a huge-screen TV & peripherals off in the family room.
We spent the weekend hiking & swimming in Afton SP and rented a pontoon boat to go out on the lake. The little town of Afton was a little too sleepy for us so found a yummy Mexican restaurant up in Stillwater and cooked-in the second night.
We'll definitely be back for skiing this winter or maybe again next summer. It's just so close yet really seems so far away. Thanks Erin for your hospitality.

Great escape from Minneapolis

  • 5 of 5
We were looking for a last minute mini-vacation; something to just get away from the cities. Afton is only about 40 minutes away but a world apart. It felt like we were in Colorado! We spent a day kayaking at the Kinnickinnic, hiked in Afton State Park one day, and went to dinner at Stillwater, then came home and made a bonfire and just kicked back for a bit. Erin was very sweet and let us use her bikes for a short ride to town but we could have easily walked. The home was very welcoming and comfortable. We'll be back in the winter.

Perfect Cabin in the Woods, no really.. PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5
My Wife and I were looking for the "Cozy Cabin in the Woods" for a nice weekend away.
If this place does't fit the bill I don't know what would!!

The home is warm and welcoming.
From the quaint walk up to the house, over the bridge and through the woods you enter into a home that instantly makes you feel like you won't want to leave. With old plank hardwood floors, wood burning stove, canopy bed in the master, and a few other nice upgrades this house is perfect for someone looking to "just get away"

The whole house was simply but beautifully decorated, and generated a peaceful atmosphere that was just amazing. Our ability to just sit and relax without any distractions, to enjoy each-others company, was heightened by the comfortable and unique furniture in living room.

The owner is super friendly and happy to provide any assistance. The kitchen was stocked with breakfast food and great cookware, if you prefer to eat in.

If you do want to eat out however, there is a fantastic wine bar within a 2 minute drive, or 6 minute walk.

For those who can't be completely separated from the outside world, the Verizon 4G cell service is quite good. I was able to use both my hot-spot and cell phone for internet access.

Shopping within a 10 Minute drive was a big plus and having the lake right there will be good when we go back next year!

I would recommend this rental to anyone... :)

Charming house in the woods

  • 5 of 5
This is a true respite and vacation and so close to the city, From the moment we arrived, we stepped back into an earlier time and another world. The roaring fire lit the beautiful master bedroom and we sunk into the quiet of this beautiful land tucked into a limestone bluff. The next morning we were greeted with 9" of snow and cross country ski'd our way to the town of Afton for a delicious meal. Everything was perfect, including our fun and interesting hosts, Robin and Erin.

Afton is know for its picturesque but small village, the St. Croix River (A national scenic waterway) and Afton State Park. You'll feel as if you are deep in nature, although only 20 minutes from downtown St. Paul. Secluded; and yet near people and activities. Area is ideal for hikers, bikers, skiers, and other outdoor lovers. Stillwater is a nearby tourist destination town, 'Minnesota's birthplace' and full of great restaurants, antique stores, book stores, clothing, etc.

History: This home was the summer home of Mike Kelly sixty years or so ago; he was the owner of the then professional baseball team for Minneapols: The Minneapolis Millers. The Valley is name Kel's Coullee, after him and the Creek is known as Kel's Creek. I met one of his gardeners (a teenager then, octogenarian 15 years ago!) who told me the yard used to be manicured by two gardeners, and sheep grazed where there is now a new forest. I can assure you the manicuring has NOT been kept up to date, but the stunning natural setting makes up for it I hope!

The Univ of MN also did a survey back along the creek (but still on the 13 acre property) and determined there were some of the last virgin woods in the area.
