About Charlie and Kathy Zigler

Our family of three live in Illinois where we have resided in our same home for 28 years. Charlie is a retired carpenter where he worked for the same company for 33 years. Kathy is a Medical Lab Technician, at one of the areas largest hospitals, and Mara is a college student, studying to be a strength and conditioning coach. Time spent together and with other family and friends is the most important thing to us. Happily ever After provides us the privacy and fun we need to do this.

Charlie and Kathy Zigler purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Charlie and Kathy Zigler chose Gatlinburg

When we visited the Smoky Mountains for the first time a few years ago, we decided then that we wanted to be able to spend more time and possibly retire to this Beautiful, Magnificent, area. After searching during many trips back to the area, we knew immediately when we found our cabin that it was the perfect cabin for us. Happily ever After is not perched directly on the edge of a mountain, it has a yard with a park-like setting complete with patio and picnic table. We feel close to our values here and have the privacy we desire. We are able to spend time together without any outside pressures, or if we want, we can join the many area activities, just minutes away, where we have met people from all around the world.

What makes this cabin unique

We knew after purchasing our cabin that it needed a little tender loving care to make it that special place in other peoples hearts, as it was in ours. We knew immediately that we wanted to enlist the help of a wood-carver friend we had met on one of our trips. Working with him, we created that fairy-tale cabin that had developed in our hearts. Happily ever After is trimmed out in hand carved trim, featuring many of the animals and birds that you will see in the Smoky Mountains. Only Good-Memories can be made at Our 'Happily ever After'!

Smoky Mountain Fun

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was both clean and in a great location. Gatlinburg could be seen from the top deck of the cabin with it's wonderful lights at night. The decor in the cabin tied the mountain atmosphere with a bear theme throughout the cabin. I would stay here again and recommend it to my friends and family.

Perfect Cabin nestled on a mountain in Gatlinburg!

  • 5 of 5

We only had two days to stay in this wonderful cabin, and believe me, that was not enough! It was wonderful - the views from the porches were stunning - just sitting in the living room, looking out at the mountains, and enjoying my grandchildren playing was the perfect weekend getaway! This cabin has everything you need - plenty of dishes; plenty of room to play; king-sized, extremely comfortable beds; awesome views; a fun game room for children and adults; washer, dryer, dishwasher - it has all of the conveniences of home! We had no trouble getting up the mountain or finding the cabin - my GPS took us right to it, and it was easy to get in and get settled quickly - it was also only about 10 minutes to get into downtown Gatlinburg, and a short ride over to Pigeon Forge. The owner, Kathy, was also extremely easy to work with - she responded promptly to us, and even texted to make sure we had arrived safely! We have already decided that we want to take a longer vacation back to this cabin when it warms up - it was that perfect! Thanks so much, Kathy and Charlie, for letting us share your "Happily Ever After" cabin!

Cozy,clean, and comfortable cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this cabin during Thanksgiving. The cabin was very clean and the decor really makes it cozy and reminds you that you are in the mountains. One bedroom is located upstairs and one is downstairs so if you are not able to climb stairs, this cabin is not for you. The stairs aren't steep, but you do have to use them!

The view was wonderful this time of year. It is quite high on the mountain so you can see for miles. The driveway where you park is level, but the yard drops off very steep. Our 2 year old wasn't allowed to walk around in the yard area for fear of falling down the hill. All of the cabins around were the same way though. Backing out on to the road was a little tricky! Downtown Gatlinburg is about a 7-10 minutes away. It is located right off the road that you would take if you were driving to Ober Gatlinburg. It was a good location but you do have drive down the whole "strip" to get there. However, there are some shortcuts you could take to avoid traffic.

The cabin had all the basics such as towels, cooking utensils, dishes, pots, etc. If you plan on cooking and may have leftovers you will need to take Tupperware or ziplocks (we forgot both). The bed upstairs in the loft (which is open to the downstairs) has an extremely soft mattress. The mattress downstairs is more firm. We didn't use the sofa bed. The hot tub was nice and clean. The cabin was decorated inside and out for Christmas during our visit. My kids were super excited and it really made it extra cozy! I have already recommended this cabin to friends on Facebook!

Great value, great owners

  • 5 of 5

"Happily Ever After" is a beautiful cabin with very thoughtful owners.

The cabin is relatively easy to find using Google Maps. It is, at most, a 10 minute drive to the town of Gatlinburg and the entrance to the National Park. The property is private, but you can see a couple of neighbors' cabins (also rentals, I presume). The neighborhood streets were steep, but were fairly easy to navigate in my mid-size SUV. The neighborhood was quiet, but you can hear the occasional car or commercial truck drive by as their engines are working hard to climb the hills. The gravel driveway and parking area was flat and sufficient for my SUV to turn around with a couple of passes.

Outside / Views

The cabin has three decks that are in very good shape. The lot is shaded by many deciduous trees, keeping things cool in the summer. The small rear yard is not really usable (it is fairly small and sloped). There is a picnic table, but we preferred the deck furniture for outdoor dining or lounging. The views were limited by the trees. The best view was from the top deck, but it was still limited. I'd imagine the views improve a lot in the winter after the trees drop their leaves. It was still quite enjoyable to spend time on any of the decks.

The cabin was spacious and tastefully decorated, with a well designed floor plan. And importantly, it was very clean. Basics, such as paper towels, toilet paper, towels, and linens were provided. The kitchen was fully equipped, but the appliances are probably around 10 years old. The only thing I lacked was a cutting board (bring one). Beds were quite comfortable (and large), but are on the soft side. If you must have a firm mattress to be comfortable, stay elsewhere. There was plenty of comfortable seating throughout the cabin. Storage for your stuff was adequate. Climate control worked very well.

There are four HD flat screen TVs with lots of cable channels. WiFi worked great. There is also a landline if you can't get any bars on your cell phone (I could not with T-Mobile).

We did not try the hot tub, but there is one on the lower level deck.

Bathrooms are a good size with decent water pressure and hot water. The water tastes OK, but you'll prefer the bottled stuff.

If you are renting the cabin because you want to play billiards...don't. The table is either warped or not level, and there is little room on three sides.

Overall, a great value with great owners.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your extensive review. We are always trying to improve Happily Ever After, and take our guests comments seriously, we encourage them, and try to work off them. We opened up better mountain views this last spring, and have had great satisfaction from our guests, giving them both a secluded wooded feel, and mountain views, all in one. We will take a look at the pool table and see what needs to be done. We haven't heard this comment before. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and hope that you will visit again. With Kindest Regards, Charlie, Kathy and Mara

Beautiful cabin that feels like home!

  • 5 of 5

We decided to spend our vacation in the Smoky Mountains and wanted to rent a cabin. Never having done this before, I wasn't even sure what I was looking for until I found this. It is so beautifully decorated and has everything you could want, including 4 TV's! The pictures show exactly what you get and it is extremely well kept and clean. The beds were extremely comfortable and there was plenty of space for everyone to spread out. The game room downstairs was a hit with my kids and the hot tub on the deck made for a relaxing evening. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, pans, etc. and having a washer and dryer allowed me to keep up so when I got home, I wasn't spending the day doing laundry. I had to contact the owner a couple times and received prompt responses. When considering renting a cabin, I never even gave a thought as to the driveway. We discovered there were some pretty scary and steep driveways so we were relieved this one was "easy". Initially, my husband thought he'd bottom out the van, but I got out and directed him and it was just fine. After that, it wasn't a big deal and it was nice to have a big, LEVEL parking space right outside the cabin. I'm so thankful we rented it for 6 nights because even that didn't seem like enough time. I don't find it easy to feel at home someplace else and this was so relaxing and comfortable, I really didn't want to leave. We purposely cut our sightseeing time short to just spend time at the cabin. It was such a nice escape from reality for a week. If we ever make it back to Tennessee, I won't consider staying anywhere else.
