About Helene

(Photo from Cannon - I think)

Family of six - now 'empty nesters'.

Love the outdoors - family of hikers, climbers, x-country and downhill skiers. Had a great time as well at Santas Village, Clarks Trading Post (Bears) and many others including the water amusement park in the summer - 'Whale's Tale'

Helene purchased this house in 1992

Why Helene chose Bethlehem

Views are spectacular.

We are a family of outdoors people. Love to ski Cannon and Loon, but moved over to Bretton Woods as the first son and later, triplets were born.

Began slowly building in 1992. Finished the interior etc. around 2004. Linwood Homes of Vancouver provided the materials. Appliances were put in between 2003 and 2011. Flat screen 43' and 31' TVs are from 2013 and 2014. We had a 54' but it fell to the floor. Couches are from 2010 or newer, Most bedroom furnishings are newer as well.

Three are newer double bed frames from IKEA, a large Queen (Not Ikea) with a firm Serta mattress and a bunk bed. All mattresses are newlike and tops in comfort.

Very rarely used - moved overseas in 2004.

We have a professional cleaning company to take care of the laundry, paper towels, toilet paper and cleaning of the interior of the rental. A local company plows and sands and makes sure there is a bucket with sand. We do not use salt.

We can pay a person to meet with you on arrival and provide keys to access the premises.

Originally planned on building a cabin heated by a wood stove overlooking the Presidential Range - but as the children arrived, our plans changed and an oil furnace with forced hot water was a wise choice. We recently installed another well (artesian) in the Summer of 2014. A new hot water heater, LG Side loading washer/dryer and filter system was added in 2012 or so.

This is the perfect place to relax, enjoy the view and recharge the batteries.

What makes this house unique

Less than a spirited walk to the downtown of quaint Bethlehem.

Relax and view the amazing Mt. Washington inside - take a leisurely stroll down the lane, go play golf in one of the many nearby golf courses, hike, ski downhill and cross country, snowmobile, swim in the Town seasonal pool, ice skate, roller blade, play basketball or tennis on very nice Town facilities and a whole lot more.

Private - quiet but not secluded location.

Ten minute drive to the main shopping areas of Littleton. Outlets 45-50 minutes (North Conway)

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an amazing stay at your home with our six children for 11 nights. The house was so neat, clean, beautiful and comfortable.

Amazing view!

This was the third time we have stayed in this lovely home. This time we discovered the "secret" snowshoeing trail at the end of the road! I confess some ambivalence about writing a well-deserved glowing review: if I do, more folks will come and we may have a harder time making a reservation; if I don't, others will miss out on a very special vacation spot.

Owner's Response: We infrequently rent out the property and do not consider it a business, but it is nice to have you back. I forgot about snowshoeing. We all cross country skied the loops of the White Mountain National Forest off the the property & down the street. Many of the trails are in good condition from some snowmobile activity. If you can ski terrain (up & down) Bretton Woods and Cannon are great workouts - but bring your contour map/compass.

Kids and adults had a great time

  • 5 of 5

Kids had a great time. We are going to make this an annual event for the family.

Location was great, views were breathtaking and the home charming. Very clean upstairs and downstairs. Very well maintained property and I particularly enjoyed the little blue Lazy-Boy in the upstairs living room.

Openness of the place was very special. Felt like we were outside with the big windows. Temps outside were -16 F but place was warmer than the thermostat setting and the home weather tight with no drafts or cold areas.

The plow person was very helpful with extra sand in the driveway as well as in the Home Depot container and metal "Campbell's" soup can.

Kids had a great time.

They loved the TEAM USA banner in the downstairs family room. Everyone slept great! Loved the bunk room.

We like strong coffee. Coffee maker was a new high end Cuisinart that prepared our Pete's coffee grounds to perfection. Microwave worked fine for us.

We watched our recorded Super Bowl XLlX NE Patriots on both flat screen TVs and relived the moment of Butler ensuring Seattle's defeat while it was snowing outside.

The outside lights/floodlights took a while to heat up because it was so cold outside. We were told to leave them on instead of switching them on and off due to the special "energy saving" feature.

Owner arranged to have a broken light switch replaced in the master bedroom - someone must have smashed into it with their laptop case.

WIFI was fast and the Dish TV programming was pretty good.

It was very helpful to have you pay someone to personally meet us and provide the keys to the place on arrival.

Thanks so much,

A family of legal eagles

Owner's Response: Dear Legal Eagles, Saw your note in the Guest Book. Always great to see comments written. We have had some very special guests - politicians, journalists, authors and others stay with us. Glad to hear the kids especially loved their stay. Really can get cold up there - -20ish F has been the coldest when we were there years ago. We just moved the small LazyBoy upstairs to the main living area. We thought it was too nice of a piece to have in the children's family room downstairs. We look forward to your yearly ritual. (we discount rates for returning guests). Sincerely, Helene and Bob

Great place!

Even went sledding!

We are a couple that normally travels and stays above the notch in the summer and fall for hiking. Love to stay in owner rented homes. We can not be cooped up in a hotel room. This is a great place and well worth booking.

For additional information we had the Hospitality link as well as the information kit the owner provided. Any questions like the TV remote after I dropped it, the owner was very easy to reach on the phone, email and iMesage.

We were greeted by a pensioner that provided a set of keys and explained the set up, the weather forecast and told us to contact the owner for any reason including additional questions. Let me say this:

Place was well cleaned, beds were very comfortable and the view was perfection. Furnishings were newer than my own vacation place on the shore. New TVs, WiFi, and Parabola programming from DishTV and even a brand new Cuisinart Coffee maker. We ended us using the smaller Mr. Coffee. I noticed the cleaning person put away the appliances in the cabinets to open up the kitchen counters.

Couches were very comfortable and the owner had changed the covers to a tan set. There was a loft! It was not accessible but I managed a peek.

Also noticed a white set of couch covers downstairs in the main closet. In the linen closet there were plenty of bathroom towels, sponges and other cleaning equipment. Even extra rolls of toilet paper and paper towels were there.

Place was warm and toasty despite the -20F temperature outside. Very nice sitting by the big windows enjoying the views.

No problems getting into the house. Plow person sanded the driveway and there was extra sand in the orange bucket at the driveway. Plow person actually calls the house to let us know he is there to take care of the driveway.

We had a wonderful stay with our loved golden retriever.

Will both be back this Summer or Fall to see the changes in the seasons.

Owner's Response: Sledding - you are unbelievable. We did quite a bit with the triplets and oldest son. Had a great time. Need to be careful and keep to the right. Where was the golden...running along next to you? Must have been a special time for you both with man's best friend. Remotes are TV specific, so it was good that you asked! See you soon. Sincerely, The Managing Owner

Leaves a lot to be desired

First off, this place gets a 5 star for the view and location. It is exactly like the pictures and made our trip all worth while. Please note we have rented six other homes on this site, so we know what to expect. Now as to why we are giving this only 3 stars.

1) The appliances are not in good working condition:

The coffee maker was not working nor did the microwave. We found this very frustrating as we all drink coffee and who doesn't need a microwave. Regarding the microwave, you could for example get some buttons to work and get the microwave working but not all of the buttons work. For example, we wanted to just heat something for a minute, but none of the buttons worked until we pressed the button for 5 minutes, which in fact ended up being the two minute button.

2) Lack of amenities:

They informed us that bedding towels etc would be provided which was great. They provided one roll of bounty paper towels for 10 people, also an inconvenience when trying to clean the house.

3) The pathway to the door is very steep:

We arrived when it was icy and snowy, therefore the pathway down to the door was very slippery. We asked if they had any salt to put on the path they said no and that we could get salt and put it down ourselves if we like. For us, we had an infant and two small children that we had to get down the path safely. When going to a vacation home the last thing you want to do bring is salt or sand. As a homeowner that should be a safety precaution provided. Just as having a fire extinguisher at home as a safety precaution so is having salt and sand as a necessity for a non paved, no stairs pathway to their doorway.

4) The furniture in the house is very dated:

The couches in the main living room, the furniture in the basement, and the furniture/dressers in the bedrooms are all very outdated. There were two plain white cloth couches in the living room that did not match the hardwood floors. It made us feel like we were walking on egg shells making sure not to get anything on the white couches. This also took away from the coziness of the place. The beds in the bedrooms were very small, therefore not too comfortable.

Overall, we enjoyed our trip very much, but it is these small details that make a vacation 5 stars and makes someone feel comfortable and at a home away from home. We feel not much is being invested back into the property.

Owner's Response: "Amir" reserved for 2 people and showed up with more than 10. (over the weekend) Amir ruined the coffee maker - grounds were in the Cuisinart's internal parts. He must have put the grounds in the water reservoir - realized his mistake and then added water. Yikes, I bought a new one. - Microwave? Most folks push the popcorn button. Popcorn comes out perfect. Maybe the other buttons are not used enough - I checked and pushed the buttons - everything works. 2) Paper towels or towels? I provide ten clean bath towels but only provide a one roll of paper towels and two rolls of toilet paper as a starter. You must have needed more for the coffee ground mess. 3) Path? The ground is not flat but ok for most people. This is NH and you need to access a good view. I encourage all to view the photo on the Homeaway listing. A local company plows and if needed - sands the driveway. Northern NH's weather can change in a moment so there is an ORANGE five gallon Home Depot drum w/lid - filled with sand at the birch tree (salt does not work well in NH low temperatures and salt is harmful to the environment). The owner does not charge a paying guest to use the sand. 4) Furnishings. We have made purchases of three new bed frames (and three spares), three new bureaus, two bedside tables and two new couches the last few years. Two identical couches in the main living area from IKEA. The covers are removable (I have four sets, white, tan and red corduroy) and the covers are laundry-mat washable for dirt and other removable items. Downstairs family room is for kids - child friendly with 2 seasoned "Stressless" leather reclining chairs we moved from upstairs and a Lady's Lazy Boy cloth recliner. We hire an independent NH professional cleaning team that services other rentals in the Bretton Woods area – they come in with their own equipment – clean and change linens & towels and other laundry.

Immaculate home!

This was a perfect rental for three families traveling together! The owner was easy to talk to and provided information about the area. The views are breathtaking and the house is very clean. Its open floor plan allowed for plenty of space for the children to play...the dog loved the yard and playing in the snow. The owner's assistant is also very kind and helpful... Great rental!

Owner's Response: We love our place and it is awesome to hear that you all thought it was a great rental. We purchased a lot of new furniture - bed frames, bureaus, mirrors and couches the last few years. Moved some items to the "family room downstairs". We tried to make it guest friendly for those with children (even have three sets of removable & washable couch covers) and for those that can not leave their pet behind. Newer Berber rugs help as well. Thank you for calling if you had questions, it certainly helps make your stay more enjoyable.

Owner's Response: Loved having you and your family for a 11 night stay. Great to speak with you on the phone and help you with the newer LG side loading washer/dryer. I wish I hadn't purchased something as fancy as an LG. In any event, always nice to hear everything was perfect and that your SIX CHILDREN got to see and experience wildlife in northern NH.
