CHARMING STUDIO APARTMENTS IN 15TH CENTURY GATEHOUSE IN THE HEART OF VENCE
Don't just visit Provence - live here, among the locals, within the very wall that embraces the region's most picturesque medieval village-even if it's only for a week or two. How ever long you stay, we know it will not be long enough. How do we know? Because our guests are always returning. And besides, you will soon see for yourself! The Gatehouse is a magnificent six storey medieval tower, built into the heart of the original 'rempart' and wall of Vence 'La Jolie'. This is the perfect retreat to immerse the adventurous tourist into the authentic heart of Provence and Côte d'Azur. Here you will feel part of history-part of the local culture-and very much at home. It is also the ideal hub from which to explore Provence: the ancient city itself, the numerous picturesque towns and charming villages of the Alpes-Maritimes, and the scenic splendour of the Riviera's sparkling jewel, the Côte d'Azur and hinterland. Whichever Gatehouse studio you choose, you are certain to enjoy the authentic, rustic charm, with all the comforts of home, including a practical kitchen and private ensuite.

The village of Vence is a perfect example of a medieval village, but with mod cons where you need them - outside the walls. We love the Provence area and have been there four times. The other times we were in a rented VW campervan and only stayed near Vence for a few days each time. We decided that this trip we would stay put for 5 days in Vence. But we ended up loving it so much we agreed to skip our other proposed stops in Provence and we stayed in The Gatehouse for 9 days and loved it.
It is a village where you an become part of the villagers' life. We don't speak much French - but we got by and really enjoyed our afternoon/evenings in the square at some of the numerous restaurants who serve drinks and food outside. There are usually boules games going on and they often become very animated! There are regular markets in the same square.
There is a wonderful visitor centre fronting the square and they will tell you (in English) of the local happenings for the time you will be there. We lucked out as there was an exhibition of Chagall paintings in Vence while we were there!
If you can handle some up and down walking, we would definitely recommend a walk to the Matisse Chapel, about 30 minutes across a steep valley. And also a visit to St Paul de Vence - we walked following a map given to us be the visitor centre - not very accurate, but it got us there - we caught a bus to return.
The Gatehouse is wonderfully situated and is only a short walk through the walled village or along the outside of the walls, about the same distance and no more than 5 minutes. The Gatehouse studios have one room and a bathroom. The main room is fitted out with cute decoration and has a table, chairs, bed, some hanging space and kitchen bench, sink, refrigerator and pantry. It has windows that open to the village path and from the bathroom past the village to the distant hills. No TV, however, there is a radio and there are plenty of books in the stairwell. We can only give the accommodation our highest recommendation. Our stay at The Gatehouse was the highlight of our 4.5 weeks trip which included a one week cruise in the Greek Islands! You will love your holiday at The Gatehouse in Vence.
