Casa Xano Xano is located half an hour from the colonial center of Oaxaca in the village of San Augustin, Etla, in the foothills of the Sierra Norte mountains. The house is high on a hill overlooking the village, valley, and the mountains. From the terrace you can see two colonial churches nestled in the trees. Our home has two completely separate apartments. The guest apartment has two bedrooms with queen size beds. Each bedroom has french doors leading out to private plant filled courtyard with gurgling fountain. There is a large kitchen with complete water purification system. There is a great view from the kitchen table looking out over the pool to one of the pink colonial churches in the valley. The comfortable, art filled, living room has a flat screen TV with cable. French doors open onto a second private terrace overlooking our vegetable garden and the mountains beyond. Wifi internet is throughout the apartment. There is a large pool house with outdoor living/dining and a gas grill. It is a perfect spot for cocktails and sunsets.
The area is full of daily adventures. For this reason it is more convenient to have a car. But we are only three minute walk from the collectivo stand. [ Five person taxis] It is a twelve peso ride into the city. We can arrange for airport pickups and private taxis for touring at very reasonable rates.
Basic shopping is available in the village as well as simple restaurants. In the next village there is a colorful daily market.
San Augustin is home to CASA, Center de las Artes de San Augustin. Housed in a magnificently renovated textile factory. There are revolving exhibitions and various classes. Next door is a wonderful paper factory. They are happy to walk you through the handmade process.
There are miles of beautiful trails in the hills around us.
We ask for a minimum of a three day stay. Unfortunately, we are not a house for small children.
There is weekly maid service. Laundry service available for a fee.
San Agustin is an authentic Mexican village. Birthdays are celebrated with fireworks, funeral processions through the village are led by brass bands. Roosters, burros and dogs, punctuate it all. It is truly a magical place. We will do all we can to make your stay memorable.
Penny and I are transplanted Brooklnites who retired in 2010. I taught theatre design and Penny was a decorative painter. We fell in love with Mexico on a vacation years ago. So, the years before retirement, whenever we could get down here, we toured all over, looking for a new home. We stepped off the plane and it was love at first sight. Our dogs Maggie and Molly will be only to happy to let you pet them.
Xano Xano exceeded all our expectations right down to Penny arranging to have us met at the airport by Sebastian, and providing an unexpected light meal for our first night. My daughter and I totally enjoyed having our own rooms, and several private patios to choose from. The decor is exquisitely charming and you will feel like you are living in a museum. This is definitely the place to stay if you want to visit Oaxaca City and get away from the bustling crowds at night.
We do not have enough words to express how wonderful this property is. You will find an oasis of tropical plants, flowers and art by local craftsmen. The service by the owners and their staff was outstanding in every way. We would recommend this villa without reservation to anyone who asks. Thank you Ms. Penny and Mr. Victor. :-) It was wonderful!!! L and N
We stayed at Casa Xano Xano for nearly a month in January-February 2014. Let me focus this review on three important aspects when choosing a place to stay in Oaxaca.
First, the location: San Agustin is out of the busy and traffic-laden City of Oaxaca – it’s close enough for a cheap taxi ride any time you want to enjoy a visit to the city and all that it has to offer, but it’s worlds away in peace and natural beauty. Your apartment is at the upper edge of the village where you have immediate access to the trails in the mountains but are only a few minutes’ walk away from the taxi rank and local shops. And San Agustin is not filled with vacation homes – it’s a genuine village with local people who greet you warmly, church bells, roosters and a dawn chorus – and celebratory fireworks.
Second, the apartment: no photos can do it justice. It is truly lovely, with plenty of space, a private courtyard and a terrace with spectacular views. The kitchen is well equipped, the two Queen beds are exceptionally comfortable and the whole apartment is absolutely beautiful - filled with good furniture and wonderful pieces of local pottery and artwork, as well as lots of books and wifi. We loved just relaxing in the apartment and around the pool at the end of the day.
Third, and most important, are the host-owners, Penny and Victor, who are a very, very special couple. They are kindness itself and generous with their knowledge and practical help. Without ever intruding (the two apartments are completely private from one another), they did everything that they could to make our stay enjoyable. They succeeded - we plan to return for another month later this year.
I have been visiting Mexico for over 25 years and I can easily say that this is the most beautiful apartment I have ever had the privilege of renting. It is spacious, comfortable and charming. But what made the visit even more special was the opportunity to meet Victor and Penny who are warm and gracious and very knowledgable. We left as friends and I long to return to see them again!
My partner and I are both writers and we rented the apartment as a writing retreat. It was easy to be inspired in the lovely green surroundings. I had several favorite nooks-- both inside and outside the house-- to do my work. In the afternoons we would take walks in the village or take a collectivo (group taxi) into the city. We also hired the driver they recommended on two occasions to take us to trips to other villages and towns. (He was also very knowledgable and friendly).
I highly recommend this place for anyone interested in combining jaunts into the city with time to relax and regroup. If you want to spend a lot of time in Oaxaca (city) or traveling around the area, or if it is your first time in Mexico and you don't speak Spanish, it would probably be helpful to rent a car. We were more than happy to spend a good portion of our days at home surrounded by beautiful folk art and gardens. Staying at Penny and Victor's home was one of the best highlights of 2013!
We are grateful for access to Penny and Victor's beautiful home in San Augustin, Etla. Every word of their description is accurate and their hospitality was exceptional. Comfortable, relaxing accommodations in a fabulously decorated colorful home featuring the work of the regional artists and lush landscaping. We actually wished we'd had more time to enjoy these comforts, but a busy schedule had us out enjoying Oaxaca during Dia de los Muertos. Lovely to stay in the village and enjoy the local celebrations and visit CASA - a gem hidden in the hills. Hosts are knowledgeable and helpful on all aspects of our stay. We felt welcome and safe at Xano Xano, enjoyed the patios, dogs and local music. We were welcomed with a kitchen that has all the amenities needed and some fruit, bread, snacks and an introduction to the local Mezcal. So very happy we found and stayed in San Augustin at this exceptional property.
This is an absolutely beautiful holiday rental - the bottom floor of a very elegant house, surrounded by a lush terraced garden. The apartment is beautifully furnished with local textiles/ceramics/art work. There is a large covered, outdoor dining and lounging area next to the pool (small, but perfectly good for a cooling off dip). The 'collectivo' pick up point is very close by - good for independent travel - but the owners have excellent local contacts for organising a driver to take you wherever you want to go. Oaxaca is a lovely city, but making the effort to go further afield to Monte Alban, the Sierra Norte, and the craft villages, is well worth it. The owners are also extremely helpful with all aspects of planning your stay - airport connection, food shopping, where to go .... Couldn't fault anything
