The day we first looked at the house, we fell in love as dolphins swam 10 feet away from the house. This home sits on a cul-de-sac and overlooks beautiful water and mangroves. The only sounds you hear are the osprey, dolphins, and quite puttering of boats going by.
This is not your typical "vacation rental by owner" property, at least at this price. The location of this rental is one of the most extraordinary spots I have ever had the good pleasure of staying in. Quite frankly, I get around. I own a house on Nantucket and also vacation in one of the world's most beautiful villages - Castine, Maine. From the moment I arrived, I was completely stunned by the beauty, with none of the typical Florida congestion. This tip of Marco Island borders one of the most uninhabited and primitive expanses in the United States, Big Cypress Swamp and the Ten Thousand Islands. If I have any complaints it would be that this particular spot is so uniquely beautiful that a form of paralysis set in making me feel like I never wanted to leave but just stay right there and get some sun, read and listen to the superb classical musical station that comes in perfectly on the radio. The Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu wisely wrote, "He who knows enough is enough, will always have enough." This rental, for two people, is more than enough. Everything I possibly needed, this rental had. Even things that weren't listed at the time, such as a brand new washer and dryer and an iron and ironing board. I found the rental to be extremely clean and the property well maintained. I was very blessed to arrive on a Saturday on which the owners, David & Amy (both beautiful people), were there with their daughter. I received a very hospitable welcome. I fell in love, as well, with the funky little village of Goodland. Talked to anybody who would listen and visited the local fish market a couple of times every week. People are very friendly here and it was a real joy to go into Marco Island and avoid the hustle and bustle of Naples. The city of Marco Island, a short drive away, I found to be almost sleepy compared to the over-hyped and frantic Naples in season. As other reviewers have shared, there are two active osprey nests nearby. Dolphins are a very common sight, and I saw three manatees lazily swimming by during my stay. Another highlight, given the probable extinction of the ivory billed woodpecker, was the visitation, off and on, of a large pair of pileated woodpeckers which are the size of a large crow. Most days I simply watched the tide come in and go out, waving to folks in their boats and cooking fresh fish from the gulf. And oh, the stars at night. I made a wish to return!

VRBO, from HomeAway
Many thanks to David & Amy for this picturesque & peaceful location on Goodland's waterfront. The comfortable, split level, house sits on a quiet court about a 10 minute walk from Goodland's restaurants-bars and is equipped with fast internet. We didn't cook much but the kitchen has plenty of cooking utensils and a large outdoor grill. Sliding glass doors in the living and dining room areas let you view the water from inside and open to separate outdoor sitting spaces with lots of sun. Most of our time was spent on the relaxing porch enjoying the scenery of boaters traveling back & forth, seagulls flying overhead, pelicans gliding across the water, and the daily presence of dolphins swimming nearby, one creating a magical moment when it jumped high out of the water on one particular morning. Twice, large dark underwater bodies swam through the waterway but were too far away to positively identify them as manatees. We, also, kept an eye on two eagles protecting and carrying fish to their baby in its treetop nest behind the lovely house across the water.
It's a short drive to Marco Island from Goodland but even Naples isn't far, approx. a half hour. One concern, and I'm not sure if the upstairs level is rented on a regular basis, but when people are upstairs, their footsteps are rather noisy. Fortunately, this only happened on our last day so it wasn't a real problem for us. Overall, our week was near perfect... just over too soon.
I would definitely recommend this property and hope to go back again!
The listing was accurate and the property was clean and comfortable. The owner responds almost immediately to questions and/or concerns and addresses them even though they are several hours away. I would definitely recommend this property to my friends and family. We spent many hours on the deck watching boats leaving the marina, dolphins ( a daily event), and watching beautiful sunsets. Even the neighbors were friendly and helpful. The only downside is there is very little to do in Goodland. It is a very quiet little town although it has excellent restaurants and good local seafood. We will definitely return and after a very cold February wish we would have stayed longer!!
The house was very clean, private with a wonderful view. Bedrooms are spacious, never had to use the AC the breeze was so wonderful. Dolphins and a manatee swam by daily. We will bring our boat next time, beautiful public boat slip and facility at the end of the street. We will definately be back. Owners are thoughtful and available if you need them, we did not.
Recognize that you are only renting the downstairs, which is why it is only a one bedroom. Porpoises swam within 30 ft. of the seawall. Very clean; fully furnished. Goodland has none of the congestion or confusion of Marco. You MUST go to Little Bar.
Place was exactly as pictured. Clean, comfortable and located in a quiet neighborhood. We found the waterway in front to be a constant source of interest. Wildlife was everywhere, boat traffic was non-stop( very quiet due to the manatee zone), fish jumping, dolphins swimming by several times a day, manatees going by, all wonders for a Mainer. Entertainment is nearby, walking distance to Sunday gatherings at Stans which were great. Another good restaurant was next door. Calusa Island was 1/2 mile drive away. Can charter fishing boats there. Can fish in front of house or walk to Goodland Boat Park next door for a pier to fish from. Entertaining, relaxing, and care free. Amy answers all questions quickly, don't be afraid to ask, we did. Stock up, if possible, before arriving. No store in Goodland. Nearest complete shopping in 12-13 miles away. Sit back, enjoy the sun, don't bring many warm clothes.

Owner's Response: Thank you Jim and Rhoda. We are so happy that you enjoyed our home as much as we do! Seeing the dolphins and manatees never gets old to us. The only thing I wanted to add to your review is that the grocery store is only 2 miles from the house. There is a Publix, Subway, Burger King, Ace Hardware, and Dollar Store two miles away. Any other shopping is probably about 12-13 miles away. Thank you again for staying with us and we hope to see you again in the future.
The tiny community of Goodland offers visitors laid back charm unlike any other place in the region. This sleepy fishing village changes drastically on Sundays when hundreds of residents and visitors make the pilgrimage to Stan's for outdoor music, drinks, and dancing!
