No matter what you do, relaxing at one of three swimming pools while enjoying a drink at the swim-up bar or taking an all day sailing adventure to the most spectacular Barrier Reef snorkeling sites in the Northern Hemisphere, there is nothing like relaxing in a luxurious 2 bedroom, 2 bath, central air conditioned casita with a balcony overlooking the sandy white beach and the blue waters of the Caribbean. The casita is complete with a gourmet kitchen fully equipped with everything you need to prepare a dinner of delicacies. Each bath has a walk-in shower. The master bath has a Jacuzzi tub as well. There are 3 flat screen TV's with satellite programming. One is in each bedroom and one is in the living room. Wireless internet access available at no charge. Quality bed linens, pillows and coverlets are provided. The furniture and art work, created in Belize, reflect the traditions of the tropics. Canterra tile floors provide a cool and relaxing atmosphere along with mahogany cabinetry, granite counters and ceiling fans.
The location surpasses all others. It is a short golf cart ride to the charming fishing village of San Pedro and walking distance to many excellent restaurants and bars.
To give you a more complete description I have included a Welcome message that guests find in the casita to guide them on their way to 'Luxurious Adventure'.
Welcome to Señor Jay’s Casa de Belize
After you have checked in at the front office and are settled, make your way to Tapas Bar and Aji Restaurant. Take the beach path 300 yards to the North (REMEMBER LEFT FOOT IN THE WATER, YOU ARE GOING SOUTH, RIGHT FOOT IN THE WATER YOU ARE GOING NORTH). It is a lovely open air restaurant and bar. Their specialty is Paella, it takes time to prepare but you’re here to relax. You can call ahead 226-4047 and tell them what time you would like it served if you don’t want to wait. Victoria is the owner, originally from Boulder, Colorado.
In the morning have breakfast at Ak-Bol, a yoga retreat. Make it there before 11AM to get a good seat at the bar looking out to the sea. You will find this “Cheers” kind of place about 200 yards to the South. Say hi to Melio, the owner, originally from Chicago. Favorite delights: start with a Belican beer and I suggest you have a couple of salbutes or puposas (chicken, beef or fish). This and a little Maria’s hot sauce and you will be ready for whatever the day has to offer. You also may want to try their Fry Jacks with a fresh tropical fruit plate, most delicious. Morning and afternoon Yoga classes are available for a small fee. Full body massage by either Melio or Mel (female) is highly recommended. You can ask Melio when you are at Ak-Bol or call Mel at 667-7041.
Walking back, stop by the front office and ask to see their book of activities. You can book with the Grand Caribe tour director for many exciting experiences, including the Lamanai Jungle River Cruise and Mayan Ruins excursion. You can also book directly with my tried and true guides. For fishing contact Fisherman Johnson 662-6548. For snorkeling Geraldo Badilo, El Gato Tours 226-2264. I highly recommend Geraldo for the all day catamaran snorkeling trip with lunch.
Want to relax? Spend some time at the swim-up pool bar and café serving tropical drinks and local fare. If you go fishing you can bring back your catch and have them prepare it for you. Fisherman Johnson will filet the fish so they are ready for the grill.
Water taxis are readily available for transportation North and South. The dock attendant will help you hail one down or you can call Dave’s Water Taxi for pick-up 610-4890.
Golf carts are available for rent through Grand Caribe. Dial 0 for the front desk to make a reservation. They have carts available at the resort. You can rent for the day or by the hour if you need a quick trip to town. Carts are a good way to explore the fishing village of San Pedro. It is a charming Caribbean town with good shopping, grocery stores and plenty of bars and restaurants. There is a $10 US round trip toll to cross the bridge into San Pedro. Stop by Fido’s for a drink and I’m told it’s a great place in the evening to see and be seen in town. Also the Blue Water Grill near the airport is on the beach and serves very good local fare. You might want to explore the beautiful resort of Victoria House just a little south of San Pedro.
Other restaurants to try:
The Lazy Croc, right next door to the North, great BBQ, chicken, ribs, beef. Check days and times of operation. Try lunch or an early dinner. You won’t be disappointed.
Palapas, about ¼ mile to the south. It is a thatched roof bar and restaurant. You’ll see a big neon sign that says BAR. Good place to hang out and feel the sway of the sea while enjoying good food and drinks. Ask the bartender for markers to add your name to the rungs of the railings. Tell them Mr. Jay sent you and ask for a “Lou” burger”, a specialty created by Lou Gentine of Sargento Cheese Company of Plymouth, Wisconsin. We were all together when Lou concocted this most unusual burger and it has now made its way as a permanent item on the menu.
The Hidden Treasure in San Pedro. Call for reservations and directions 226-4111.
Capricorn – high end restaurant comes with good recommendations. It is about a mile North, on the beach. Call them at 226-2809 for reservations. You can take a water taxi or walk there along the water.
Portofino Restaurant is another high end restaurant to try. They may provide a free water taxi to and from Grand Caribe. Call for transportation and reservations 220-5096
