Welcome to Mr Jay’s Casa de Belize
Upon arrival you will be greeted at the front desk by friendly staff that will be taking care of all your needs during your stay at the Grand Caribe. While you are there, make a reservation for the onsite restaurant “Rain” for early cocktails and dinner for that night. You will find excellent food and great ambiance at this roof top, 4th floor restaurant and terrace. Hugo and Victoria, formerly with Ahi Restaurant now own and manage “Rain”.
In the morning have breakfast at Ak-Bol, a yoga retreat. Make it there before 11AM to get a good seat at the bar looking out to the sea. You will find this “Cheers” kind of place about 200 yards to the south (REMEMBER LEFT FOOT IN THE WATER, YOU ARE GOING SOUTH, RIGHT FOOT IN THE WATER YOU ARE GOING NORTH). Say hi to Melio, the owner, originally from Chicago. Favorite delights: start with a Belican beer and I suggest you have a couple of salbutes or puposas (chicken, beef or fish). This and a little Maria’s hot sauce and you will be ready for whatever the day has to offer. You also may want to try their Fry Jacks with a fresh tropical fruit plate, most delicious. Morning and afternoon Yoga classes are available for a small fee. One and a half hour full body massage in their upstairs grass hut is highly recommended. You can ask Melio when you are at Ak-Bol to make a reservation.
Walking back, stop by the front office and ask to see their book of activities. You can book with the Grand Caribe tour director for many exciting experiences, including the Lamanai Jungle River Cruise and Mayan Ruins excursion. Want to relax? Spend some time at the swim-up pool bar and café serving tropical drinks and local fare. Happy Hour is from 3:00 to 5:00. If you go fishing you can bring back your catch and have them prepare it or take it to Akbol to make a feast for you. Water taxis are readily available for transportation North and South. The dock attendant will help you hail one down.
Golf carts are available for rent through Grand Caribe. Dial 0 for the front desk to make a reservation. They have carts available at the resort. You can rent for the day or by the hour if you need a quick trip to town. Carts are a good way to explore the fishing village of San Pedro. It is a charming Caribbean town with good shopping, grocery stores and plenty of bars and restaurants. There is a $10 US round trip toll to cross the bridge into San Pedro. Stop by Fido’s for a drink and I’m told it’s a great place in the evening to see and be seen in town. Also the Blue Water Grill near the airport is on the beach and serves very good local fare. You might want to explore the beautiful resort of Victoria House just a little south of San Pedro.
Other Restaurants To Try:
Palapas, about ¼ mile to the south. It is a thatched roof bar and restaurant. You’ll see a big neon sign that says BAR. Good place to hang out and feel the sway of the sea while enjoying good food and drinks. Ask the bartender for markers to add your name to the rungs of the railings. Tell them Mr. Jay sent you and ask for a “Lou” burger”, a specialty created by Lou Gentine of Sargento Cheese Company of Plymouth, Wisconsin. We were all together when Lou concocted this most unusual burger and it has now made its way as a permanent item on the menu.
Capricorn – high end restaurant comes with good recommendations. It is about a mile North, on the beach. Call them at 226-2809 for reservations. You can take a water taxi or walk there along the water.
Ahi Restaurant is just a little north of the Grand Caribe. Take the road or beach path. Lovely outdoor restaurant on the water. Quaint and romantic.
A must do, Sunday Funday at Crazy Canuks, just south of the airport. Live local talent starts playing around 3PM great fun afternoon.
Some things to know:
Wireless Internet service is available at no charge.
The paintings in the Condo were purchased at Belize Arts which is located on the city map (E4) located next doorway north of Catholic church, east side of front street, next to Fido’s Bar & Restaurant. Introduce yourself to Lindsey, the owner, she is from England. This is a wonderful art gallery and gift shop. You will certainly find some treasure there to take home.
Belize exchange rate - $2 BLZ to $1 US. ATM’s are available at Banks in San Pedro.
To retrieve your messages on the telephone dial 737 use code 1900. Press P for play and D for discard.
Call front desk to make arrangements for passage to the airport.
