Vieques Island House Rental Photos and Description

Lo-season, $175p/n; Hi-season: w 1 bdrm $200p/n; w 3 bdrm $220p/n

Adjacent to the Nature Reserve, on a hilltop in Barrio Monte Carmelo; sleeps up to 6 with 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2 large wrap-around terraces with an outdoor dining area and built-in gas grill. Our beautiful, architecturally-designed home offers incredible views in all directions with breezes to match. Wake up in the glorious morning to unobstructed views of the Reserve and the island of Culebra, and even St. John and St. Croix on a clear day, or have a cocktail on the front balcony while you watch the lights of Vieques and main-island Puerto Rico twinkle in the distance. The countryside location is in the center of the island so you can be just about anywhere in 5-20 minutes — from the island's best beaches to restaurants and shopping. Our Viequense neighbors are friendly and respond in kind to a smile and a wave. Friendly dogs, wandering chickens and free-roaming horses are all a part of day-to-day life in Monte Carmelo, so if an insulated resort-like experience is what you're looking for, then our house is not for you. But if you are looking to experience real-life Vieques in the comfort of a safe and stylish house, then we have no doubt you will love it here. Free wifi and hard-wired computer access. In high season, if only the master bedroom is rented with the house, the per-night rate is reduced to $200 from $220 for all 3 bedrooms. In lo-season it is $175 per night for 1-3 bedrooms. Note there is always only 1 party in the house at a time.

About Jamie & Perri

We are Jamie and Perri and we live in Brooklyn, NY when we're not in Vieques. Jamie has a wine shop and Perri is a graphic designer. We love Vieques and we can tell you all of our favorite not-to-be-missed places so you can enjoy it as much as we do!

Jamie & Perri purchased this house in 2006

Why Jamie & Perri chose Vieques Island

We love our mountain-top location with it's constant breezes and and unstoppable views of the Nature Reserve, the distant islands, and Vieques itself. It's always comfortable, with no need for air conditioning, and when the mosquitoes are biting in town, the breezes keep them away on the hill. As a bonus, our house is located in the center of the island so it's equally convenient to get to just about anywhere you'll want to be.

What makes this house unique

• unobstructed views of the Nature Reserve, distant islands, Vieques and Puerto RIco

• constant breezes

• Completely renovated, unique architectural design inspired by Spanish-Colonial detailing, featuring a plethora of traditionally-made tile and woodwork.

• 2 large rear terraces, a front balcony, and a built-in outdoor gas grill

• located in the center of the island making all destinations within 10-20 minutes

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have been fortunate to have blogger extraordinaire, Cassie of Hisugarplum.com, and her lovely family as our guests twice this year. She took some fantastic photographs of the house that we would love to share with you. See Cassie's blog post about El Dormilon at:

Wonderful vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5
My family of five arrived here for a quick vacation before school started back. When we arrived Miriam greeted us and gave us a tour of this magnificent house! She assured us that she was only a phone call away if we had any problems. We spent every day exploring the beaches and snorkeling with the equipment provided with the house. Evenings were spent at the great local restaurants and watching the sun set from the verandah. I would live to make this an annual vacation spot for my family. Both Perri and Miriam were so helpful. We really felt at home at El Dormilion!

This home is just wonderful. In a nut shell, the views are fantastic, the location is convenient, the breezes are abundant, it's clean, comfortable, well stocked and the decor is beautiful. We relaxed immediately upon arrival. There are so many nice details to mention..... We traveled with 2 teens, and the layout of the house worked great for us. You feel like you're outside even when you're in.....great doors and windows everywhere! We cooked often and the kitchen was stocked with all we needed plus the benefit of quality cookware....rare! We ate out for lunch most days, but really preferred the beauty of the view and cool breezes at the house in the evenings where we could relax and eat outside. The garden is abundant with blooms and those visiting now are probably enjoying pomegranates and lemons right off the trees! There are books to browse and fun music to listen to....that is if you choose music over the coqui! We played cards and games every night....all provided. We didn't think we would dare do laundry while on vacation, but the washer/dryer came in very handy for beach towels and tees. We found everything we needed for the beach including chairs, floats, snorkeling gear and even noodles! We liked the neighborhood sounds.....roosters, dogs, frogs etc, but if you want complete silence, it might not be the place for you. We could even hear horses making their way down the hill in the evenings.....nice sounds to us. Perri was fantastic to work with and saved us so much time by providing recommendations and sharing info about the house before our arrival. Miriam is so sweet and she made herself available for anything we needed. Honestly though, we just didn't need anything......except a return trip!

Stunning views and attention to detail

  • 5 of 5
We arrived after a long day of travel with our two kids and breathed easy. We knew immediately that we had chosen right. The other reviewers are right; the pictures are totally accurate and if anything, don't fully convey the beauty of this home..The decor is artistic, thoughtful, fitting with the landscape. The house is convenient, but looking out over the vast reserve with the sea beyond, one has the feeling of being very far away from it all. Just try lying on the hammock on the porch and thinking once about work! The house is very well stocked and we found it comfortable in every way. The owners are also easy to reach with questions and Miriam is super helpful. It is in a real neighborhood. If you're looking for a resort experience, this is not it. For us, the neighborhood added a great deal to the experience and we enjoyed meeting our neighbors (and their horses). Highly recommend.

Just As Advertised! Great Place to Unwind

  • 5 of 5
As everyone before has mentioned, this is a wonderful place to stay especially for a family. This was our first trip to Vieques having been to PR and Culebra a few times and we have been enjoying ourselves so much.

The house is on the edge of the refuge with beautiful unspoiled views of the east end of the island. On a clear day you can see Culebra, St. John and St.Croix all from your patio. The night sky is fabulous.

The house is tastefully decorated with a multinational theme. The tile work reminded us of our recent trip to Morocco! Perri and Mirium (the local housekeeper) see to it that everything you need is there, clean, and in good working order. I found them exceptionally responsive to any little need.

The only thing I would say as a caution is that if you want solitude and absolute quiet then you might not be happy. This is in a neighborhood which for us was great. We met Abe and co. next door and even enjoyed a few concerts from his front porch. But neighbors come with some noise- the occasional concert as mentioned which went until about 10pm- but also lots of crowingroosters and barking dogs which might bother you if you are a light sleeper. Again, I like to experience local flavor and none of the above was excessive but if you would be put off by it it is better to know in advance so you are not disappointed....

The house is perfect to get to both towns and great beaches with less than a 10-15 minute drive. Add to it some great restaurants and you've got a great place to spend a week or more! We spent a couple of days where we never left the house- eating/sleeping and reading on the patio was all we needed!

Great job Perri and Jamie!

Incredible home on an incredible island!

  • 5 of 5
We recently returned from a week's stay and were so upset to leave such a lovely place. The pictures really do not do the home justice. The owners were great and checked in with us the day after we arrived to make sure we were happy with everything. The wonderful house manager who lives nearby was great and offered some great tips and recommendations. The house is kept incredibly well, spotless when we arrived, and the views of the nature preserve from the many decks are priceless. The yard is full of fruit trees and beautifully maintained. The well-stocked kitchen was perfect for cooking dinner, thought definitely be sure to try the great places in Esperanza. As many others have mentioned, the house is in a local neighborhood, and you will see dogs, chickens and horses, which, although it can make driving a bit difficult, provided a local character that we enjoyed. Would recommend to everyone!

Can we go back? Now, please?

  • 5 of 5
This house provided us with the perfect stay in Vieques. Let me start out by saying that we were seeking a mix of adventure and relaxation for our time away and we got exactly that. The house itself is so beautiful, clean and well taken care of. When we arrived, Miriam greeted us and showed us the property. She was kind and thorough and reassured us that she was always a text or phone call away. Since neither my boyfriend nor I had ever been to Vieques, we appreciated her kindness.

The house is located on top of a hill and like other comments on here have stated... you are definitely in a neighborhood, this is not a secluded resort-like setting. If you are looking for the latter, then the W Hotel is down the road. Truthfully, having visited the W for a day during our stay, I couldn't have been happier with the choice we made. This is not to say the house itself isn't a luxury to be in. We got to spend our days at the beach and our evenings reading, cooking big dinners and watching sunsets over the island from the beautiful balconies.

Also, a couple we travel with from time to time came to visit us and the setup of the house was perfect for our situation! We each had our own space but were able to share the beautiful living area.

The house rules and guidelines were very helpful during our stay! The restaurant recommendations were great. We highly recommend El Quenepo. The only outdated rec seemed to be for Chez Shack which appeared to have been closed for good when we went, but I'd call and make sure. For activities, aside from using the snorkeling gear and getting out in the water, I would recommend renting scooters and going to the far end of the island to Green Beach. We had a beautiful ride, I would just be careful of mud.

Lastly, Perri went out of her way to check in via email to make sure all was well when we arrived and left. I felt taken care of the entire stay and I wouldn't have changed a thing about our experience. We will definitely be coming back here to stay. I hope this review did the house some justice because I simply cannot recommend this place enough.

Thank you, Perri!

Vieques is a small, unspoiled island 7 miles east and a world away from the main island of Puerto Rico. Our neighborhood, Barrio Monte Carmelo, is a rustic, local, hilltop community centrally located between the Island's best beaches and the towns of Esperanza and Isabel Segunda. In 10-20 minutes you'll be on the beach in the Nature Reserve or at one of the island's best restaurants. Our Viequense neighbors are friendly and respond in kind to a smile and a wave. Friendly pups, chickens and free-roaming horses are all a part of day-to-day life in Monte Carmelo, so if an insulated resort-like experience is what you're looking for, than our house is not for you. But if you are looking to experience real-life Vieques in the comfort of a safe and stylish house, than we have no doubt you will love it here. We especially love the house in the peaceful early-morning hours when the light is glorious and the birds are singing!
