This 1796 classic Connecticut farmhouse is on 15+ very private wooded acres. An exquisitely comfortable combination of the antique and the modern, this is country living at its best. Beautifully wood-paneled, antique-filled, yet with comfortable modern touches like a huge new country kitchen, a 55' 3-D TV, wireless internet, a brand new back patio with built-in grill, outdoor fireplace, comfortable seating for lounging and outdoor dining, and a new hot tub which seats 8. Yard is fully fenced for small children or dogs. The grounds include an icehouse, and a pond at the bottom of the field.
Inside is beautifully decorated with antiques, many original 12 over 12 windows, wide board floors, and original wood paneling. The living room has a huge fireplace, there is a library with another fireplace, built-in bookcases, cozy seating and big TV, a full dining room with yet another fireplace, a new country kitchen which seats 6-12, with a Viking Range and French doors to the patio. There is a first floor office with computer, a downstairs bath, and a full laundry room/mud room. The second floor has two large bedrooms with wide board floors and antique quilts, two double beds in each, one with fireplace, and a third bedroom with two twin beds. There is a full bath on the second floor. The third floor is the kids' bunkroom, much more casual, with TV/DVD combo, a full bath, and 2 bedrooms, one with two singles and a double, and one with a queen and two singles.
The house is perfect for a family retreat, a two-family getaway, a long weekend or a week or even a full month. It is isolated in the woods, yet within 10 minutes of Torrington and Winsted for groceries and other errands, and 20 minutes for Litchfield or Norfolk. Centrally located for skiing Mohawk, Sundown or Woodbury, or for visiting the many local boarding schools, for the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Yale University Summer School of Music, Infinity Hall concerts, Litchfield County antiquing and wine-touring.
We're a family of five from Westchester County, NY, with a large extended family, who love to come up here and play and be together. I inherited this house from my father, and then couldn't bear to sell it.
Anne Yeager purchased this farmhouse in 1977
My father bought this house in 1977, and after he died we couldn't let it go. We brought it up to date, made it lovely, and use it for family time; Thanksgiving, birthdays, and random weekends. We hope to retire here soon.
The house has the benefits of antique charm mixed with enough modern assets to make it super comfortable. The comfy couch in front of the almost walk-in size fireplace is a favorite reading spot, the big TV in the other room always has a game on, or a movie, the pond has beavers and bass, and can be skated on, the hot tub and outdoor fireplace are recent additions that make everyone want to keep returning for pure relaxation. And the kitchen just begs for great meals to be made.
Litchfield County is rural Connecticut at its best: fall foliage, winter skiing, spring and summer beauty. There are three ski mountains within 20 minutes, shopping in nearby Litchfield, antiquing in nearby Woodbury, Infinity Hall Music Hall, the Yale Summer music Festival in Norfolk, winery tours, Farmington River tubing, hiking and fishing, or just relaxing.
