Stephanie and I are both writers. We've lived in Ojai since 1992, and raised our two children here. We're happy to make restaurant recommendations, or suggest activities and places to visit during your stay.
There is no city in California quite like Ojai. It's home to a great number of artists, writers, actors, and musicians, all of them drawn to the area for its spectacular beauty and lack of pretension. Ojai has a way of mixing people of different social groups, which may be a reason that many celebrities make Ojai their home. Here, they're just ordinary people, in an extraordinary place.
Walking along the trail, through Libby Park, or biking out to the beach at Ventura. Getting an ice cream cone at Ojai Ice Cream. Seeing a concert or play at the Libby Park amphitheater, or watching a tennis match there. Heading up into the hills to swim in a deep waterhole. Biking into the East End of the valley. Smelling the orange blossoms in spring. Getting a massage or spa treatment at the Ojai Valley Inn and spa. Playing a round of golf at the Inn (which is expensive), or at the beautiful municipal course, Soule Park, a 3 minute drive, which is cheap. On Sundays, it's great to walk the three blocks to the farmer's market for fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the area--especially the tangerines and oranges from Ojai. Then see the afternoon movie sponsored by the Ojai Film Society at 4:30. On most weekends, you can take in a play at the Ojai Art Center. The Art Center's summer musical productions are spectacular.
Ojai is home to several outstanding cultural events, including the Ojai Music Festival, Ojai Storyteller's Festival, Ojai Playwright's Conference, and many others. Visit ojaievents.com for more complete listings.
