I live in San Francisco, California, and love to visit the Big Island when I can. This home was built by my brother, also the manager of the property for his family in 2007.
Adam Jacobstein purchased this house in 2007
Hale Apapane was built by Adam Jacobstein, the owner's brother, and was his family's home for 6 years before they moved off of Hawaii Island. It has been very carefully designed to take advantage of the surrounding landscape, with large windows, and enough room for a big group to feel together in the open living space, but still have separate areas upstairs. The furniture is all high quality and it was decorated with a purpose in mind.
The house is large and open inside. It has special artwork from local artists and photographers. It hace hot tub, a swing in the yard, and a large covered carport for playing basketball or hanging out.
My husband and I stayed at Hale 'Apapane for 4 nights in May with our 4 younger kids, ages: 10,7,4 & 3 month old baby. We live on Oahu, but wanted to bring our kids to the big island to visit the volcano. We had an amazing time and we all loved the house. It was in a great location very close to volcanoes national park, and about an hour drive to the other places we wanted to see. We visited all the waterfalls near Hilo on the day we flew & then took another reviewers advice and stopped at a grocery store in hilo before checking in. (got a big can of hot chocolate) Really easy check in! The next day were able to visit the park's steam vents & lava tubes then go to the green sand beach (locals drove us down) & the black sand beach with turtles. We loved coming back 'home' to a cooler climate and relaxing in the hot tub. The place had everything we needed, including fresh fruit & english muffins & a bunch of condiments. (we didn't need to buy the mayo & mustard that we had bought) the next couple of days were spent exploring the puna area...the hot pots, the lava tree state park, the town of kalapana. We also visited a really cool non-lit lava tube in hilo called Kaumana lava tube or kaumana caves, drove up to mauna kea and hiked across the lava flow from park side to see the lava. We weren't interested in the kona side during this trip, since we live on oahu, we were really interested in seeing the volcano :)
The home was very clean, loved the soft sheets! (we are pretty picky about our sheets!) My daughter loved having her own room. There was a nice pack & play for my baby to sleep in and plenty of space. There were notes posted around the house with info about the wifi, how to start a fire, etc.
loved the extras! like the board games for the kids, the basketball & hoop, sidewalk chalk :) and travel books. We ended up leaving our copy of Hawaii Revealed for the next visitors!
Mahalo for helping to make our vacation fabulous!
PS- also noticed there was one set of snorkel gear (didn't use it) in the laundry room
only issues were that the water pressure was a little weak...but it was really not that big of a deal and we couldn't get the dvd player to work. Didn't matter- we just watched tv. :)
I would definitely come back!
We had a wonderful visit on Hawaii and specifically at Hale 'Apapane. The house was beautiful and comfortable. Everything was as described. The house was a perfect location to explore Volcanoes National Park and beyond. We would hightly recommend this house.
We stayed two nights in the Volcano area of the Big Island during our trip to make it easier for us to explore that part of the island. This house is perfectly situated for that.
We were thrilled with how kid-friendly the home was. Our children had Lego to play with, toys to read, and the yard is a children's paradise (swings, basketball, and sidewalk chalk all left for them to play with).
Inside, the house was very clean and well-appointed (and beautiful in design!). I would absolutely stay here again and recommend it to anyone else looking to explore Volcano National Park.
We had a wonderful time in this home.
Very spacious, clean and fully equipped at a fantastic location.
Mark was a great host. We recommend it 100 %
If we come back to Big Island, we will definitely stay here again
Manfried with family
We had a great time staying here for two nights this summer. The house is very spacious and well equipped. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are beautiful. The hot tub was great after a long day of hiking.
This house is really, truly beautiful. It looks like those houses in Sunset magazine. Beautiful views, and so tastefully decorated with really nice woodwork. Loved the dining table, stained glass lamp and coffee table - works of art. We had 4 adults and 3 kids with plenty of room. Great proximity to the park. The only problem we had was no hot water. A call to housekeeper and a flip of the switch took care of it, but that was after 2 of us had cold showers. Keeps the hair on your chest, or so I'm told. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.
We are located one mile from Volcanoes National Park and . 5 miles from charming Volcano Village. Restaurants, art galleries, and a farmer's market are all nearby.
