Overview

Barra de Navidad House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

After traveling extensively along the west coast of Mexico, we found Melaque/Barra de Navidad and instantly fell in love with the place & its people. Nestled in the stunning shores of Bahia de Navidad, this small Mexican village moves at a different pace from the rest of the world, inviting you to soak up the more authentic and sophisticated elements of the surrounding culture. Recreating, dining, world-class fishing, yoga, surfing, golfing, & horseback riding are just a few of the endless opportunities we enjoy here. Melaque offers what you can't find in the more crowded, touristy parts of Mexico.

In 2006, we built the perfect, custom beachfront, vacation home for our family and decided to call it, Casa Estrella (our star on the beach). Our home, with one of the largest private pools and large outdoor patios, offers the perfect blend of Mexican architecture and color with all the contemporary conveniences in a stunning two-level, 2,300 s.f., open-air villa. Soft tropical breezes, lush flora and sparkling Pacific Ocean views bring the warmth of Mexico into every room of this house. Without effort, 'stress' becomes a foreign concept as you while away your days lounging beside the pool that overlooks the ocean or stroll the beach to a nearby market or restaurant.

With secure parking, walled and gated home, weekly pool, garden & maid service, you'll be guaranteed the vacation of a lifetime at Casa Estrella.

Keywords: beachfront home, ocean view, private/secure home on the bay, newer custom built home near shopping & dining

About The Owner

My parents wintered in Mexico for 20-30 years and I inherited the addiction. Once you get to Melaque, you too will fall in love with the place & its people.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why The Owner chose Barra de Navidad

After traveling Mexico extensively, I found Melaque an ideal place to live & vacation for long periods of time with my family.

What makes this house unique

The view of the bay is spectacular and I often enjoy whale sightings from the comfort of the patio. My home is within a short walking distance of all the creature comforts for food & drink.

Absolutely Amazing

  • 5 of 5
Casa Estrella was perfect in all regards: safety, aesthetics, function and Fernando's constant assistance, availability and professionalism. As a teacher on a class trip with students, safety was a priority and Casa's alarm system, outdoor lighting and Fernando provided me a constant sense of security.

The house is wonderfully laid out to allow people private space when they need it, and time together when desired. The pool, perfect in it's own right on those hot Melaque days, is accentuated by the large gates opening to the beautiful playa. The tiled island in the kitchen is quite conducive to group cooking projects, a real benefit to those who love to cook.

I long for my return to Melaque and Casa, not for work this time, but for play. Bernado's fishing and snorkeling trip, exploring the town and discovering new places to eat, and meeting more of the warm and welcoming people of Melaque are all in my families future. When it happens, I will be staying at Casa Estrella again.

Everything we needed (almost!)

  • 5 of 5
Arrival was smooth and helped by Fernando's excellent airport pick-up service and house tour. The house is as advertised- Clean and appointed. The beds are comfortable and the air conditioning in all the bedrooms was appreciated. The kitchen had almost everything we needed (no baking sheets for making oven-fries however). We BBQed fresh fish outside and nearly wore out the blender making fruit shakes. The fridge kept the beer cold.

Security was fine. The house alarm was reassuring and the gates and locks all felt secure. We didn't feel particularly threatened, but like all tourist destinations, appropriate caution is warranted. We had zero problems and felt safe at all times.

The neighborhood is pleasant and stores and restaurants were all a bike ride or walk away. Taxis were cheap and plentiful (We used Aurelio 315 108 8188 and he was always punctual and helpful and most importantly a very cautious driver. He can understand very simple English and is patient.). We would spend days at the beach or snorkeling or lounging and return home for dinner and an evening swim in the pool. We did swim in the ocean out front with our 10 and 12 year old but they are strong swimmers. The surf and undertow can be challenging in the south end of Melaque in front of the house and most people may prefer to walk to the north end of the beach or ride to a nearby beach for water play.

The other thing missing from the house were alarm clocks. I'm sure the owners will address this for those of us that travel without their iPhones. The WiFi did work and was fast enough but with the concrete walls the signal was minimal outside the back bedroom. If you plan to work a bit while you are there, there is a nice desk in the back bedroom near the WiFi router you can use. Sadly you won't be able to work with fast internet out by the pool. This could probably be rectified if the owners moved the router into the front room.

Fishing with Bernardo (his number is listed in the house) was affordable and fun. He speaks perfect English and takes great pride in what he does. He took us snorkeling another day and we would recommend that trip (caught Bonito and snorkeled and had great day). We also went sailfishing with him and did well.

Would we stay there again- absolutely! The house architecture and layout was fabulous and the neighborhood was safe and quiet and the town is now one of our favorite Pacific Mexico towns. But shhhh... don't let the secret out.

Casa Estrella

Our stay at this lovely spot was most enjoyable. The house was very accommodating, and the setting was absolutely beautiful. The beach frontage was very scenic, and we spent a lot of time lounging out front and watching the surf and particularly the stunning sunsets. The pool was amazing, and we found ourselves in and out several times a day (and night). We used the bicycles often, as we went into town for our daily supplies. Fernando was very helpful, and the pool man, gardener, and the housekeeping ladies were all very thorough and friendly. There seems to be some concern for not wasting electricity. With this in mind, it would be a consideration to change the outside louver doors, with fully closing sliding glass doors, to accommodate more efficient use of the air conditioning system at night. The louvers didn't quite shut properly, which let the warm temperature in, and also the beach noise. The surf is generally a pleasant sound, one gets used to, but the occasional, exceptionally loud pounding surf that occurs, half a dozen times a night, would be less startling, if there was fully closed doors. We felt quite safe there, as we used the alarm system faithfully at night and when we left. The people in town, were all very friendly and helpful, considering our very limited use of the Spanish language. We had many laughs, but managed to get our message across. We would love to come back to this lovely spot again, and would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit this quiet little village.

Great Property with a Bad Experience

  • 3 of 5
The house was fantastic and has everything you could need except alarm clocks and curtains upstairs! I would recommend the property however, I feel compelled to notify any prospective guests of the safety concerns we had in Melaque. We slept in the master suite, with the sliding door open, with the screen closed, which does not lock. We were using our iPhones as alarm clocks. Fortunately, all other valuable were hidden. I awoke at 4:00 a.m. to two teenagers in our bedroom rifling through our belongings. I screamed at them and they ran away. They had scaled the fence to enter the property. They stole other items of no value, such as conditioner and pens. Nonetheless, the trip ended with such a terrifying experience that we feel all potential guests should be aware of this possibility. For us we felt unsafe after. The last two days of our vacation were sleepless and filled with stress and anxiety. It has been a very expensive loss to replace the stolen items. Consider the following: I asked and we were told that it was very safe and didn't need to be needlessly worried about security because break ins were not common. We asked around town our last two days there and were told by other tourists, that it is a common occurrence. Tourist occupied properties stand out and are targeted. We heard many stories from other tourists and some local friends in our last few days there and on our flight home. Anyone who says otherwise isn't realistic. The owners dealt with the situation very seriously, kindly and personally came to inquire if we were okay. Their caretaker, Fernando is amazing and supported us to file a police report in Cihuatlan and to help deal with the situation. He was superb. Our recommendations to take further security measures to have alarm sensors on all entry points and more secure locks on all doors were taken. Particularly, on the sliding screen door, so that future guests can choose to sleep with it open for air and be secure. The owners assured us that the house manual would be updated with some security information including the caution that nothing should be left around the pool at night that may attract thieves (we left nothing on our volition) and that all occupants should sleep with all doors closed and secured and the alarm on every night, with no exceptions. If you aren't, you're safety is at risk. Otherwise, felt safe in Melaque but won't return because of this unfortunate and costly experience. All we wanted was to relax in the sun.

Owner's Response: Lana & Joel: We too are so very disappointed that as renters of our home your vacation was tarnished by this experience. Although quaint as it may seem, it’s good to remind folks that Melaque is not immune to opportunists and petty crime…like anywhere else in the world. And unfortunately, folks often let their guards down when vacationing and that’s when tourists are typically taken advantage of. It’s easy to be romanced by the tropics and become very relax in Melaque, but we practice the same safety precautions in Melaque as we do back home in the States. The vault and the security system are in place at Casa Estrella to deter these sorts of things from happening and we too wish you had chosen to not leave the doors wide open & the alarm system off that night.
