Guestbook comments from the manager

The little house in Kyoto (Translated from French by computer)

I found a "Machiya" for rent in Kyoto and I did not know what to expect. I knew it was only a small traditional wooden house, and I received over the Internet all the necessary instructions to locate

On a broad avenue of Higashimaya district, a narrow lane, difficult to identify in which it undertakes. It runs at right angles and here we are at home.

The door opens onto a narrow hallway, where we put bags and shoes. Separated from the entrance by a small curtain (a "Noren"), cooking, and deep down, a tiny garden of mosses

Left row, slightly elevated on three tatami rooms separated by sliding panels.

The set is small and, despite some concessions to Western comforts, perfectly traditional.

We are used without difficulty to our small Machiya. Too happy to return the night after a hard day. Adjust the space by moving the partitions according to our activities, but also by time and light soon became obvious. Little or nothing to clutter the space, no tables, no ornaments, just a calligraphic panel. Neutral colors ...

So the focus is on materials and eye lingers at leisure on the watermarked paper windows, the tracery of bamboo, the pattern of the main panel carved in wood.

Living for a week, as we have done, a wooden house is an interesting (somewhat less expensive than the hotel) that can discover a different way of living. A first step to Japan .... yesterday. For I find it hard to combine this type of habitat, relatively stripped with the glut of goods and consumption binge that seems to characterize today's Japan.

The owner of the house is an Australian, came to Japan for a period of pottery and visibly seduced stayed. He bought and lovingly restored this Machiya for rent to curious travelers.

Moss Garden Cottage & Cottage of Peace

Moss Garden Cottage & Cottage of Peace
  • 5 of 5
The names of these two cottages say it all. It was such a peaceful place to spend our evenings and early mornings. This worked very well for us. We were two couples (all approx 55yolds) and had one of the cottages each with an adjoining door. We were all very comfortable. We believe 6 adults would be a bit of a squeeze but not impossible. If you are lacking stability/mobility/confidence on your feet we would suggest the Peace Cottage rather than the Moss Cottage as once you are inside everything is on the one level except the initial entry.
All the information provided by the agent about the cottages is accurate. We stayed for 7 nights from January 7 2014 during cold conditions and were very comfortable with the heating provided. The agents were prompt and efficient in dealing with us throughout the booking process and very helpful with information and assistance with other aspects of our stay.
Please note that only the Moss Cottage has a microwave and only the Peace Cottage has a laundry. This worked ok for us as we were sharing with people we knew. If only booking one cottage I would first check with the agent regarding if the other is booked as the walls between cottages are very thin and this may affect your stay.
Location is excellent. If you wish to get to Kyoto Rail Station we suggest a 10 min taxi ride for approx 1400 yen as opposed to 4 subway tickets at approx same price. This saves time (if 2 people then more cost effective on subway). There are many interesting sites within walking distance. The Japanese people on the street are very helpful and we never had any problems getting around or finding the sites. Most nights we were walking the streets until 10pm or later and felt very safe.
It was a wonderful experience staying in these cottages.

Beautiful, charming house in excellent position

  • 5 of 5
We loved this property. First of all it is a great position with easy access walking, bus or underground to everywhere. We mostly walked as it was very central. The house has everything you need and is beautifully decorated in typical Japanese fashion. The owners were great, easy check in great instructions and service. We loved it would happily return

Great location

Jizo-An was terrific. Great location, fun to be in a traditional setting, and a wonderful shower and deep tub. Only shortfall for some would be steep stairs to the bedroom.

Adorable classical little machiya

  • 5 of 5
This review is for both Kokean and Heian, the connected two little houses that together have 3 bedrooms and 2 baths.

We got to the place without much trouble; it's very close to the Higashiyama metro stop. Upon arrival, it was probably the same 97 degrees inside as outside. A few hours later and the air conditioners turned on, and it was comfortable. The basic entry floors are stone/tile and the main room floors are all tatami mats. This gives the house great character but may be tough for westerners not used to being on the mats. That indeed would be my only hesitation. For instance, I am 5'11, hardly that tall, but much have banged my head 20 times on the ceiling beams because it was not really made with me in mind.

The kitchenette in Koke-an is really nothing more than a microwave and microfridge. The heian kitchen is much more substantial. Three burners. Have to turn on the gas first to get them to work but then they were great.

Aside from how quaint and traditional and lovely the rooms themselves are, the neighborhood is also brilliant. Perfectly quiet at night but quite close to Gion and all the temples. You can walk to Philosophers path in the morning, hit a museum in the afternoon, and go to dinner in Gion at night. A car would be difficult as I saw no obvious place to park but there are lots around (and if you read/speak Japanese you might even be able to figure out how they work).

In sum this is a great place. It's a fair rate. It's got everything you need. It's not a fancy hotel; it's a traditional little old townhouse. But it's in a great location and nicely done and unless you are 6'4 and can't learn to take your shoes off, you can't go wrong here.

iso-An was an amazing place to stay in Japan.
Located within easy walking distance of the center of Kyoto and the local subway system this was aperfect location for you to explore
You are living in a residential area and really feel like you are immersed in what it is like to live in Japan.
There are excellent local amenities with super markets and atm machine just round the corner.
The local restaurants in the area are great especially the one opposite the house which was ideal for those lazy days.
The house is located down a side alley and is out of the way it is a great retreat after spending the day exploring kyoto. Very quiet and secluded
The house is compact ( as are most place in japan!) but very comfortable and the iron bath is great! The bed room is beutiful with the paper screens and tatami mats.
The guys at windows to Japan were very helpful and friendly.
They helped us arange travel to and from the airports on our arrival and departure and were always available if we needed them.
They even popped over to say hi once we arrived.

I had to bow low for the traditional accommodation

  • 4 of 5
Everything was great or taken care of, when we asked for it.
The one thing, it is not so easy for a tall man.
The other thing, washing hands after the toilet has to be
done in the shower.
Location great, fun to stay in the heart of a domestic neighbourhood.
