Also just minutes from a well known landmark that supposedly got its name since it was a well known horse racing spot. Spectators would climb to the highest dunes to view the races below, we now call Jockey's Ridge. Visitors climb to the top, fly kites and even hang glide from this unbelievable sand dune formed by Mother Nature.
Handicap Friendly features: Joshua's Tiki Hut features an elevator for access to all levels of the home, although bedroom and bathroom on lower level do not have wide doors or roll in shower.
The first point you need to be aware of is that this ocean front home is located next to a public beach access. You must claim your spot on the beach early; otherwise you will not have the convenience of being in front of the house. There is a lot of foot traffic all day and into the evening which is a bit distracting when sitting on the upper deck. And there is the port a potty that sits adjacent to the property.
The elevator is handy for off loading baggage, coolers, food, etc. One person in our group had mobility issues so it was really nice.
All of the bedrooms are a good size. Some mattresses need to be replaced. Linens are provided but at a bare minimum. There is one bath towel, hand towel, and wash cloth per person. Hand towels are not provided for the half bath on the top level and the outdoor bathroom. No dish towels or dish cloths are provided. Pretty skimpy in comparison to other vacation homes I’ve rented.
There were some cleaning issues; the worst being mold on the shower door tracks, doors and hand rails in one of the bedrooms. There was so much mold that it fell into the shower when the water was turned on. No excuse for this one.
Look carefully at the online pictures of the kitchen. It is quite small for a large group. We had people arriving and leaving at different times so we managed. It was a bit surprising that there was just one refrigerator on the top level. The kitchen really needs maintenance. The stove top was badly stained around the burners; both dishwashers’ racks were rusty, there were barely enough forks for one meal, and no teaspoons. If you are not into cooking on your vacation, this probably wouldn’t matter.
We had to call the property managers 3 times during our stay; television not working; internet not working; sewage backing up into the basement toilet and tub. These were taken care of. They had to send someone to pump out the septic tank.
The spa in the pool doesn’t work and based on the rust and hanging wires around the electric supply it has probably been that way. The water fall on the rock wall doesn’t work either. The corn hole boards are rotting. The exterior spaces could use some power washing
If you have any mold allergies, stay away from the lower level. The musty moldy smell is really strong.
This house was adequate for our needs, however, when you are paying this much for a rental, you expect it to be in much better shape. I would not stay here again.
We had a full house with 20. Overall they layout was typical and we enjoyed the tiki hut and swim up bar area. Several maintenance issue however included the thermostat on the first floor was set to 72, which the management company quickly came out and adjusted – and noted that the owner was advised that 72 was to warm. Also the first floor refrigerator was missing shelves that made it less functional. The pool circulating pumps were not functioning and it took 5-6 hours to get the repair man out after promising a less than 30 minutes to dispatch the repair man, tiles are falling off in the pool area and there are exposed rebar on along the tiki bar. The Jacuzzi cover is also deteriorating and needs replacement.
The third floor air conditioner needed to a new electronic board which again the management company fixed, the main microwave has a faulty circuit and the "0" did not work, the toaster shorted occasionally. The kitchen dishwashers both had severely rusted baskets, the cooking and pans, utensils and serving bowls were substantially inadequate for house capacity, tow of the doors in bedrooms would not lock. Overall the kitchen was the smallest I have seen in a house with this capacity. We did not call the management company for all the malfunctions as we wanted to enjoy some of our time do things other than being on the phone.
In general all the indoor room fans were covered with a thick coat of dust.
On the plus side this is the first house we rented with the ice maker actually worked, there were plenty of plates, glasses and wine glasses, and the outdoor refrigerator was particularly convenient. Also the view of the Jul 4 fireworks was spectacular.
We had rented Big Mama’s two years and liked it although it was not available this year. We were thinking about renting it next year for the better kitchen layout; however given that it now has the same owner we have decided not to.
