Welcome to our House of Bamboo: Here the boundaries between the inside & the outside world are blurred through the masterful architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Joseph Eichler. Walk into the large open custom tiled atrium with loungers & fire pit surrounded on 3 sides by walls of glass. Open the sliding glass front door into the completely open 50 ft wide living/dining/kitchen/family room area perfectly designed for effortless entertaining.
Transparent floor-to-ceiling walls of glass look out to the oversize backyard fenced pool patio area perfect for entertaining and al fresco dining and featuring a thermal solar heated pebble tec freeform pool with built-in bench seating, resort quality loungers, and an outdoor jacuzzi hot tub under a truly magnificent huge Canary Island palm tree.
Practically a full outdoor kitchen with the dedicated patio drink fridge with counter and stainless steel 5-burner gas grill with smoker tray & rotisserie.
The entire home has been painstakingly remodeled in Spring 2010 with new 3 person cedar dry sauna installed in Sept 2012.
The home now features strand bamboo flooring throughout with in-slab radiant heat , open modern kitchen with custom stained strand bamboo counter tops & cabinets, an eat-in kitchen with seating for 4, separate living room bar counter with 5 stools, huge front guest room with separate entry to front yard & atrium, completely remodeled baths with unique bamboo sinks and the master bath featuring tan enormous walk-in custom tiled shower with dual shower heads & dual shower wands. Open the back fence gate and let the kids run, play Frisbee, or catch a ball in the large open field surrounded by hills. The kids will also love the multiple swings & rope ladder in the fully private & fenced in front grass yard. Walk 5 min. up a nearby hill that has a large oak tree with 2 swings for phenomenal views of the hills, SF Bay, & the Civic Center (also designed by Frank Lloyd Wright). Access numerous open space hiking/mountain biking trails just across the street & down half a block.
Living here makes us always feel like we’re on vacation: the peaceful & serene setting , the beautiful views of the gentle hiking hills across the street , the rustling of the palms trees, the myriad variety of bird songs. Although San Francisco is only 20 minutes away, our House of Bamboo feels completely different. Escape the chilly fog of The City as typical summertime temperatures here are often 15-20 degrees warmer than San Francisco.
The ideal location for all Bay Area activities: The proximity of our House of Bamboo to a variety of Bay Area activities can’t be beat! Top tourist attractions are easily accessible. It’s the perfect location in between Napa and San Francisco: Hike or bike on beautiful Mt. Tamalpais (15 min), stroll through the huge redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument or laze on the sand at Stinson beach (both are 20 min), wine taste in Sonoma & Napa (30-45 min), see the sights on SF bay by taking the Larkspur ferry (8 min.), mountain bike or hike China Camp State Park (5 min.) , explore West Marin’s beautiful Pt. Reyes National Seashore (35 min.), stroll downtown San Rafael which exudes a small town feel yet offers many very good restaurants, specialty stores, and a few live entertainment venues & movie theaters (5 min.). There are at least 7 golf courses in Marin County alone, so you’ll agree that the House of Bamboo is THE place for your next San Francisco Bay Area vacation.
The house was well laid out, well stocked, and well maintained. It allowed the ability to gather together in several places, and for individuals to find seclusion or partake in varying activities.
The description of the place matched well what we found. Having grown up in a similar home by the same developer on the Peninsula, we had a good sense of what to expect. There were a number of nice detailed upgrades which still kept the basic flavor of the 'California Modern' style.
The owners were very responsive throughout the whole process, and provided very helpful information on both the house and the area.
We enjoyed being close to places where we could enjoy nature. It was possible to access the hills via a short walk down the street. In the city itself we enjoyed going to China Camp State Park near the Bay. Mount Tamalpais was not a long drive away, and allowed great views of the northern portion of the Bay Area. Even Point Reyes could be reached within an hour without having to even get on a highway.
Other destinations of interest were also easily reached. Frank Lloyd Wright's Marin County Civic Center is only a couple miles away, and there is much that can be seen on the inside. San Francisco itself is not far - there was even the opportunity to reach it by ferry, though we had enough on our plate to permit it.
One relatively local place we enjoyed eating at was 'Toast' in Novato - in a small shopping center a few miles north, and just east of Hwy 101.
We would gladly recommend this home for a group that would like to casually hang out, but be accessible to a variety of activities.
We rented the House of Bamboo to enable us to get together as a family over the Christmas holiday. The house was perfect for us and exactly as represented - well maintained, spotlessly clean and equipped with everything you could possibly need. We were also delighted to discover that it was decorated for the holidays, including a Christmas tree - everything on timers so we didn't need to deal with anything. The layout is open and inviting, yet very private in a quiet neighborhood, and enabled everyone to gather together or carve out private space as necessary. We loved the hot tub, the sauna and the grill - it was winter so we didn't use the pool but can attest that it is lovely and the patio area is well equipped with heaters and furniture. The furnishings are high end, with very comfortable beds and good quality linens and the fireplace was a nice touch on cooler evenings. And the best part - Moonlight the cat, who completely stole our hearts (we never actually thought we were cat people, but she proved us wrong - I miss her already!).
All communications prior to our arrival as well as the instructions that were left in a binder (and emailed beforehand) were thorough and professional. We were left wanting for nothing. San Rafael is a cute little town with good restaurants, a mall within walking distance, and hiking trails nearby. It's also close to the ferry to get into San Francisco as well as highway access for other points on the peninsula and beyond.
You can't go wrong with this one - highly recommended, and we hope one day to return.
This place worked out wonderful for my family's annual vacation. I find a different location each year to get my family together and it will be hard to top this one for having everything for the family to enjoy.
It has a glass wall that keeps everyone inside at the kitchen and dining room connected to the activities going on in the wonderful back yard with its pool and hot tub. The house was so much fun it was hard to get the kids away to take in the many sights and activities we found to do in the area.
The location was perfect in a smaller community and quiet but close to the downtown and the bay area activities. Didn't waste lots of time traveling as it was easy access to a quick trip downtown.
House was laid out wonderful with quiet bedrooms but central area kept all close. Moonlight shed more than I would have liked but was that time of year he was getting a new coat and he is such a friendly cat I couldn't be upset with him and my grandkids loved him lots.
There is so much to see and do in the bay area that I hope to return soon and when I do I will check to see if this property is available so I could do my stay all over again.
We very much enjoyed our stay in the bamboo house. It was a great fit for our family that has 3 kids under 6. It's set in a 60s development with many other Eichler style homes which are like mini compounds with privacy walls on small lots. The hills in the background add some visual interest and would be good for hiking with older kids.
The place was just as described in the listing, and the owner was very attentive before, during, and after the stay.
The bedrooms are comfortable and worked well for our kids.
There are 3 bathrooms. A couple have visually interesting but poorly functioning bamboo sinks. But the showers and tub were perfect.
The kitchen is lovely though it has some design quirks. Bamboo is a wonderful renewable resource, but it is impractical in some applications because it's so soft. I doubt the homeowners would choose it for countertops again. We were careful with them and didn't have any issues. It did not detract from the stay at all except for the nagging anxiety that something bad may happen.
We loved the house sound system and some of the other tech made available to the guests. It really made it a party.
The front and backyard were big hits. The hot tub in particular was great for winter visit with highs in the 60s. The pool would surely have been a good time in a warmer season.
We were an hour from SFO and a half hour from downtown San Francisco. It was quiet, peaceful and very California comfortable.
Our stay at this wonderful house exceeded our expectations by far! We especially enjoyed spending time in the open kitchen and diningroom/livingroom area. From here we were able to take in the relaxing atmosphere of the pool and surroundings while preparing and having meals inside and outside at the picnic table. The grill was perfect for our BBQ evening outside. The outdoor lighting of,the house and bamboo plants along the pool gave a warm and festive touch to complete the picture and to enable total relaxation. We can definitely recommend to stay here and we got along just fine with Moonlight, the friendly house cat.
The home was perfect for a family weekend away. We enjoyed the heated pool, sauna and jacuzzi. I cooked many meals and the kitchen was well equipped. We enjoyed the Sonos sound system and even missed our own cat less as the owners pet was around quite a bit.
