|Minimum Stay||4 nights|
Darwin's Hearth has been standing in the heart of Downtown Frederick since Stonewall Jackson marched his troops through the town on their way to battle. Whether you are looking for a stroll through the area's rich history or a week's getaway in a super trendy little town, our little home is waiting to welcome you!
Our home is a completely renovated historic home within walking distance (2 blocks) of all downtown shops, restaurants and bars. Walk 2 blocks in the other direction and you'll stumble into Frederick's magnificent Baker Park that has a big playground for the kids, lovely strolls for the adults and free concerts every Sunday evening in the summer.
At Darwin's Hearth, we welcome your whole family including small children and even your small doggy if he or she knows about indoor rules!
As an added treat, with every rental of at least one week we'll throw in a free massage (either at our home or at the spa) by My Red Bow Spa in nearby Braddock Heights!
We know you'll love our home as much as we do and can't wait to welcome you into the warmth of our hearth and home!
I grew up in the area and have lots of family nearby. We bought this lovely home to live in, but work has taken us away from the United States for a few years and while we can't enjoy our home, we would love for others to enjoy its quaintness, convenience and rich history.
Christena purchased this townhome in 2012
We bought the home quite simply because we fell in love with it!
Where do I start? We arrived slightly behind schedule to find Frank and Marcela waiting for us to give us the tour of the house. It was excellent, full amenities tour – right down to cautioning us about the ‘auto-lock’ feature on the back door---- this proved so helpful to us since we used the backyard patio daily…always remember your key…lol!
The home is beautiful, comfortable and fully equipped. Our little pug Grisham was happy with the fully fenced yard and the lovely dog bowls provided for his comfort – never mind the collectibles with the pug theme. We loved the comfortable beds, terrific shower and lovely furnishings and décor. It’s so close to everything in Frederick – we walked around the town daily without needing the car at all. Five minutes to Starbucks, cafes and restaurants and a lovely central park area. The shops are fun and quirky. The kitchen has everything you need – pots, dishware and glassware -plus there were basics provided such as sugar, spices, salt and pepper, cleaning products etc... There were also enough dishwasher tabs for the number of nights we were staying, but we’re just two, so we washed by hand. Anyone staying with a larger family would have no trouble seating them around the spacious dining table and cleaning up with the dishwasher later on.
Linens were provided – towels, sheets, comforters and even dog blankets for the furniture (we had brought our own, but still, a really nice touch!).
I’d particularly like to thank the owners for leaving the CD guided tour of Gettysburg – we had planned to buy it for our trip there, but there was no need. There are also many brochures to guide you around the many things to see – both historical and artsy.
A lovely touch, a bottle of wine from the local winery and a chunk of amazing cheddar with crackers were waiting for us – this rental could not have been more perfect! Thanks so much for sharing your home with us – we will recommend your town and especially your home to all our friends. Our special holiday for my birthday was made more special by spending it here.
We had an amazing vacation at Darwin's Hearth! The house is great, very well equipped. The location is great too, not far away from Baker Park where there is there was the summerfest going on ( free concerts on Sundays and Thursdays), swimming pool, restaurants etc ...
It was really easy to stay in contact with Christena who answered us very quickly.
The hospital team was great ! Franck was really helpful and quick to answer the phone whenever we had a question...
We come from France and we spent 2 weeks at Darwin's Hearth. ) We have a daughter who's 2 1/2 and she enjoyed the house so much : the toys, the books, the yard and the pugs were her favorites :)
We also appreciated the fruit basket and the little dollies for our daughter that were waiting for us on the table when we arrived!
We recommend Darwin's Hearth for your stay in Frederick ! The house is great and the town is a nice place for vacation with a family.
Darwin's Heart : thanks so much for a delightful stay ! We hope to be back soon !
We had a great week at Darwin's Hearth. My husband was mobilized in Frederick and I and our kids came up from western VA to spend Spring Break with him. The townhouse was a great size for the 5 of us. The check in and check out were very easy, friendly, and not time-consuming at all. We took the kids to the Rose Hill Manor children's museum, which was a real gem! Frederick was a good starting point for day trips to DC and Baltimore. Plenty of good restaurants downtown and a spectacular city park all within walking distance.
Good kitchen, good decor (we get the feeling that the owners are fond of pugs :-), very comfortable. Markers, play-dough, and other games (as well a a video game) were left for our girls' use, and they were so excited: a really nice touch. There is a cute little fenced yard where we managed to have the world's shortest (yet fun) Easter egg hunt!
Suggestions: the beds need mattress pads because the sheets slide around, and also because it would be more sanitary. Things were basically very clean with a few exceptions (some "old house" dust and dirt here and there when we arrived).
This was not a problem for us, but the steps (particularly to the TV room on the third floor) are super-narrow and not for the faint of heart. Also, you can hear EVERYTHING that happens on the street from the front rooms. City living, I guess.
We would certainly stay there again.
If you're looking for a place to stay in Frederick, this is the perfect spot. It's within walking distance from almost everything.
On our recent stay we had two couples and one 4 year old so we needed something for everybody.
When you walk out of the front door, if you turn right, you're 2 blocks from North Market Street. There you'll find restaurants, shops, Starbucks and a brew pub. I pretty much gravitated to the brew pub and left the shopping to my wife and daughter-in-law. They're better at that with me out of the way.
If you take a left turn out of the door, it's a few steps to the end of the street and then left again, go 2 or 3 blocks and you come to Baker Park. Try to keep up with a 4 year old there. The park has everything to keep a little one occupied. It even has an amphitheater which I imagine gets some use in the warmer weather. When you think you've seen it all, if you cross the street to the west, it gets bigger. Also across 1 street to the south of the park is a dog park if you need one.
For a history buff, about 50 feet off of N. Market Street, on E. Patrick St. there is the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
From the house it's also a short drive to Gettysburg PA.
I almost forgot to mention that the place has a full kitchen, tv, wifi, cable etc.
An now a word from my wife:
The home, the home, the home!!!
What a nice place, it is cozy and comfortable. Very clean, a home away from home. We enjoyed just hanging around and playing games. I would recommend anyone going to Frederick to stay at Darwin's Hearth. The owner is very accommodating and gets back to you quickly to answer any of your questions.
We plan to book it again in the future.
What a perfect "home away from home"! My father wanted to travel from Tennessee to spend a few days with me, my son and my grandson. Someone I work with told me about vacation rentals by owner. I really like Frederick and when I was looking for a place and came across Darwin's Hearth, I knew it was the place for us. Boy was I ever right! First of all, Christena was an absolute delight to deal with. She responded right away to emails and was very prompt in answering all my questions. I felt like I got to know her and like she really wanted to make our stay perfect. She even left a little something for my grandson! She just made the whole transaction very easy for me and my dad and that was important to me. When we arrived at the home, we were greeted by Frank and he was awesome too! He gave us a tour and made sure we had everything we needed while we were there. There was one day we were having a hard time figuring out how to start the dryer. We called Frank and within just a few minutes Marcela showed up and got us squared away. These are all just remarkable people to do business with. I had so many good things to say about our stay that my mom (who lives in Michigan), wants to stay here when she comes to visit this spring! I truly only have great things to say about the home as well as Christena, Frank and Marcela! And Frederick is just such a neat, historic town! The only thing we missed a little was a television in the living room. My dad likes to watch the news and he doesn't do well with stairs. But he survived and we all enjoyed our time together at Darwin's Hearth! I love your place Christena!!!!! A BIG thanks to you, Frank and Marcela for making our stay wonderful!
I found Darwin's Hearth when searching for a place to stay in Frederick to be near my family for an extended visit. The description and photos provided are absolutely accurate. It was a delight to work with Christena (the owner) -- she was quick to respond to all my questions and she is truly interested in her guests' comfort. The kitchen is beautiful and exceptionally well equipped. I hosted several family dinners and everything I needed for cooking and serving was there. All the appliances (including the washer and dryer) were in great condition. Some of the unexpected amenities provided were mittens and umbrellas! And toys and books for children! A very important part of feeling at home at Darwin's Hearth was the wonderful welcome I received from the hospitality team Marcela and Frank. They were there to greet me when I arrived and gave me a complete tour of the home answering all my many questions. I felt very comfortable and secure knowing they were only a phone call away. I did have to contact them with a question -- not only did they answer my call immediately, they came to the house within 15 minutes to make sure I had the information I needed. Frank and Marcela are the best! I would have preferred a Queen bed instead of a double in the master bedroom but that was a minor inconvenience. Darwin's Hearth is a wonderful century-old home near the historic downtown area of Frederick close to shops and great restaurants. I enthusiastically recommend it and I hope to have the opportunity to stay there again.
