Guestbook comments from the owner
My husband and I stayed at Alta Cresta a couple of nights back in late June and had a wonderful time. The cottage is comfortable and beautiful - a real retreat. The morning breakfasts were simple and tasty and the bottle of wine waiting for us - from a local vineyard - was perfect with the french bread and olive oil. It was also great being a little bit outside of downtown Paso Robles because it made for some fantastic views and a very quiet two days. The grounds of Alta Cresta are gorgeous and the owners make the perfect hosts - helpful and gracious without being intrusive.

If you've been, you know Paso Robles is just a great place to be - and Alta Cresta made it even better.

Susan O'Reilly is a native of Florida. Trained as an accountant, her last position before running Alta Cresta Orchard full time was as a Senior Applications Consultant with SAP America. Her specialty was assisting corporations with the implementation of SAP's Consolidation Accounting Software and in SEC Reporting.

Ron Sanders originally from Alabama then Florida worked for 40 years as an environmental engineer. He most recently was employed by CertainTeed Corporation as “Western Environmental Manager” with responsibility for assuring environmental compliance for CertainTeed’s manufacturing facilities in the western US and Canada. In July 2009 he retired to devote all his energies to tending to the growing of olives and production of Alta Cresta Orchard’s award winning extra virgin olive oils.

Both Susan and Ron are avid gardeners. Knowing that gardening would always be a part of their lives and anticipating a welcomed change in their hectic lifestyle as retirement approached (influenced a bit by the reality show 'The Good Life' admits Susan) they began to look for a lower stress rural environment with an ideal outdoor climate. The Florida humidity can be oppressive during a large part of the year, so they began a search for a place with a drier Mediterranean-type climate. Their search quickly focused upon California. Paso Robles Wine Country, not well known at the time, was a chance discovery during an impromptu visit to the area in 2002. They wanted a place that was rural but still easy access to a city. Paso Robles fit the bill. They located an ideal property, but the seller was not quite ready to sell at the time. They contacted a local realtor and asked her to watch the property and contact them when it came on the market. They got the call from the realtor several months later and Alta Cresta Orchard was born.

Susan O'Reilly purchased this cottage in 2005

Located high on a crest and overlooking the serene and beautiful Olive Orchard and neighboring vineyards of the Creston Valley, the Olive Cottage Bed and Breakfast was originally built as a guest cottage. In 2006 it was remodeled with added extra conveniences and touches and transformed into a high-end Bed and Breakfast. The Olive Cottage Bed and Breakfast has every amenity one could ask for: a complete kitchen, serene and spacious bedroom, living/dining room and full bath. The private veranda overlooks a valley of vineyards and rolling fields of grain. Guests can prepare a dinner in the fully equipped kitchen or choose to go out to one of the outstanding local restaurants after a busy day exploring Paso Robles Wine Country.

SLICE OF HEAVEN

  • 5 of 5
We loved our stay in the cottage surrounded by well-cared-for gardens and olive orchard. Every plant on the property was carefully selected and nurtured. The owners really paid attention to detail for the guests from a lovely, no-pressure breakfast items stocked in the kitchen to the places to sit outside and enjoy the breezes. They picked the perfect spot on top of a hill for gorgeous views, privacy but also convenience to wineries and downtown. The cottage was decorated with taste and class- not too cluttered but comfortable and homey. We enjoyed our friendly hosts but felt like we had temporarily inherited our own private estate. Very clean and obviously cared for. Photos do not do it justice.

ANOTHER WONDERFUL STAY AT THE OLIVE COTTAGE

  • 5 of 5
It's been a few years since our last visit but it's still our very favorite place to stay in Paso. The owners' attention to detail and high standards translate to immaculate accommodations with many thoughtful touches, and the vistas of the Paso countryside as viewed from inside through the French doors and out on the covered patio are fantastic. We will return. Thank you, Susan, for another lovely stay.

COULDN'T GET ANY BETTER!

Couldn't get any better!
  • 5 of 5
My husband and I spent four nights at Alta Cresta while exploring Central Coast wineries. The photos do not do justice to the beauty of the cottage! Immaculately kept and welcoming , we found cheese, wine and bread upon arrival. Every morning, a new breakfast treat awaited us. We especially enjoyed meeting with Ron for an oil tasting, which was also excellent. We loved walking through the grove and neighborhood. We would highly recommend staying at Alta Cresta and if we ever find ourselves in this area again, we would not hesitate to be repeat customers.

BEST EVER STAY IN PASO ROBLES

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Olive Cottage for a weekend in June to celebrate my wife's birthday. Our experience exceeded our expectations and we look forward to returning again. The cottage is comfortable, spacious and well appointed. We especially enjoyed having the kitchen stocked with coffee, yogurt, granola, breakfast pastries, and juice. The veranda out back was a relaxing place to enjoy breakfast, take in the view and plan our day of exploring and wine tasting. Despite the warm weather the covered veranda remained pleasantly cool and shaded. The cottage was also very private and my wife enjoyed walking through the olive orchard. This is truly a very special find and and a first rate alternative to a traditional hotel or B&B. We highly recommend the Olive Cottage at Alta Cresta to any looking for private, comfortable and relaxing getaway.

OUTSTANDING ACCOMMODATION WITH VIEWS FOREVER

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for 3 nights at Olive Cottage and felt totally pampered. Susan and Ron went out of their way to make us welcome but did not intrude on our privacy. The cottage sits on the top of the hill and you look out over the olive grove with many birds and the occasional deer in the background.
The breakfast offerings changed each day with really interesting local delights. The kitchen has all the equipment you could wish for and the bathroom is amazing with fresh towels everyday, as I said "pampered"
The location is excellent for as much wine tasting as you want and Paso Robles is worth a visit. We were lucky enough to be there for the art and craft show in the main square.
Thank you Susan and Ron we would love to come back and will certainly recommend Olive Cottage to our friends at home in Australia.

I WOULDN'T DO PASO ROBLES ANY OTHER WAY

I Wouldn't do Paso Robles Any Other Way
  • 5 of 5
I hesitate to write this, because I want this gem to be available for us when we want to go back. We can't have this place become TOO popular!

The pictures of the cottage simply can't do it justice. It's way bigger than it looks, has a great floor plan, it's immaculately kept, and the location is fantastic. We were really in Paso for some serious wine-tasting (Susan marveled at the fact that we were up early and gone all day) and this was the perfect launch pad for such a trip. The breakfast items changed each morning, and it was always better than your typical continental fare. The cottage is private and quiet, with it's own outdoor space and killer views. The bathroom shower is a highlight, and they provide bath amenities made with olive oil - a nice touch.

We found Susan to be delightful; she even mailed us back some jewelry and -ahem- unmentionables that we left behind. We fell in love with Paso Robles... and we fell in love with Alta Cresta. We will absolutely be back.
