About Susan O'Reilly

Susan O'Reilly is a native of Florida. Trained as an accountant, her last position before running Alta Cresta Orchard full time was as a Senior Applications Consultant with SAP America. Her specialty was assisting corporations with the implementation of SAP's Consolidation Accounting Software and in SEC Reporting.

Ron Sanders originally from Alabama then Florida worked for 40 years as an environmental engineer. He most recently was employed by CertainTeed Corporation as “Western Environmental Manager” with responsibility for assuring environmental compliance for CertainTeed’s manufacturing facilities in the western US and Canada. In July 2009 he retired to devote all his energies to tending to the growing of olives and production of Alta Cresta Orchard’s award winning extra virgin olive oils.

Both Susan and Ron are avid gardeners. Knowing that gardening would always be a part of their lives and anticipating a welcomed change in their hectic lifestyle as retirement approached (influenced a bit by the reality show 'The Good Life' admits Susan) they began to look for a lower stress rural environment with an ideal outdoor climate. The Florida humidity can be oppressive during a large part of the year, so they began a search for a place with a drier Mediterranean-type climate. Their search quickly focused upon California. Paso Robles Wine Country, not well known at the time, was a chance discovery during an impromptu visit to the area in 2002. They wanted a place that was rural but still easy access to a city. Paso Robles fit the bill. They located an ideal property, but the seller was not quite ready to sell at the time. They contacted a local realtor and asked her to watch the property and contact them when it came on the market. They got the call from the realtor several months later and Alta Cresta Orchard was born.

Susan O'Reilly purchased this cottage in 2005

I Wouldn't do Paso Robles Any Other Way

I Wouldn't do Paso Robles Any Other Way

I hesitate to write this, because I want this gem to be available for us when we want to go back. We can't have this place become TOO popular!

The pictures of the cottage simply can't do it justice. It's way bigger than it looks, has a great floor plan, it's immaculately kept, and the location is fantastic. We were really in Paso for some serious wine-tasting (Susan marveled at the fact that we were up early and gone all day) and this was the perfect launch pad for such a trip. The breakfast items changed each morning, and it was always better than your typical continental fare. The cottage is private and quiet, with it's own outdoor space and killer views. The bathroom shower is a highlight, and they provide bath amenities made with olive oil - a nice touch.

We found Susan to be delightful; she even mailed us back some jewelry and -ahem- unmentionables that we left behind. We fell in love with Paso Robles... and we fell in love with Alta Cresta. We will absolutely be back.

This was our celebration of our anniversary. What a great place. Susan was a great host. We were met by her and when we entered the cottage we had wine, cheese bread and olive oil waiting for us and a great heavy continental breakfast each morning. The cottage was quiet, beautiful, everything you need in a home away from home! We have decided this will be where we will celebrate our anniversary from now on..... See you next year!

Wonderful Getaway in Wine Country

5 of 5
Submitted: January 22, 2013 Stayed: January 2013
My husband and I wanted a few days in the wine country of Paso Robles while visiting our son and his family in Los Angeles. We picked the Olive Cottage from the description on VRBO. It surpassed our expectations. We had originally considered staying right in the heart of Paso Robles, but are very happy that we made the decision to stay in the beautiful countryside outside the town. The accommodations are first rate with many special touches. From the delicious olive oil, wine and bread upon arrival to the luxurious bathrobes and olive based bath items, it is apparent that Susan and Ron have strived to make this cottage a very special getaway. They are both delightful hosts who are there if you need them, but never intrusive. The highlight of our stay might have been watching the sunset from the patio overlooking the olive orchards -- it truly rivals the views in Tuscany. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

A relaxing, peaceful, and perfect weekend!

My wife and I celebrated her 40th birthday weekend at the cottage. She found Alta Cresta in Sunset magazine. The entire experience was wonderful! The cottage has all the amneties that you may like in a hotel (free wi-fi, satellite tv, toiletries, housekeeping) and the personal touch of a B&B (local coffee, local wine, olive oil, bread, cheese, and much more!). It thankfully leaves out all the things I cannot stand about hotels (generic, impersonal, and stale) and B&B's (staying in a room in the owner's home, pressure to socialize, and feeling like you always need to whisper). The cottage has everything it needs and doesn't rely on the residence. Susan met us when we arrived and thanked us on our way out. She was entirely available to chat and introduce us to their homemade olive oil; however, it was based on if we wanted to engage or not. We felt taken care of while keeping our privacy (we have 4 boys at home and really needed time for us). The kitchen had everything needed to cook, the living room was warm and inviting, the bathroom was pristine with an open shower and local made tolietries, and the bedroom was the perfect size and cozy. All of the furniture was up-to-date, great selection of the most recent travel magazines, a myriad of books ranging from best sellers to local history, and the food provided was fresh and local. The views from the back patio had the feel of being in Tuscany. Upon our request, Susan provided tasting and insight on the different Olive Oils. We purchased the Italian Blend (smooth with a little kick in the end) and Coratina (provided in the cottage upon arrival with bread). My wife said it was the best birthday gift ever! Her expectations were high after visiting the website. Those expecations were surpassed! We visted quite a few vineyards and recommend Still Waters (right below Alta Cresta), Sculptera, Hug, Villacana, and Alta Colina. We also love Edna Valley Vineyard and Baileyana in San Luis Obispo. I know Susan and Ron would never ask for a guest to write a review, but we feel that Alta Cresta Orchard needs to be known and experienced by anyone looking to vacation in the area. It's well worth it and we can't wait to return!

Comfortable and beautiful - a real retreatcomforta

Submitted: October 18, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
My husband and I stayed at Alta Cresta a couple of nights back in late June and had a wonderful time. The cottage is comfortable and beautiful - a real retreat. The morning breakfasts were simple and tasty and the bottle of wine waiting for us - from a local vineyard - was perfect with the french bread and olive oil. It was also great being a little bit outside of downtown Paso Robles because it made for some fantastic views and a very quiet two days. The grounds of Alta Cresta are gorgeous and the owners make the perfect hosts - helpful and gracious without being intrusive.

If you've been, you know Paso Robles is just a great place to be - and Alta Cresta made it even better.
