I am the original owner and builder of this property, and worked on the elaborate stonework over a period of 9 years. I also enjoy organic gardening and my guests love to help themselves to the continuous abundance of fruit from the orchard, including peaches, cherries, apples and a favorite for the kids, my huge raspberru patch. Guests have their privacy, yet I am just a call away to answer any questions or help with local plans. I have really enjoyed the guests and have made many lasting friendships.
I didn't buy it, I built it because I am a compulsive project starter and also feel compelled to finish what I start. Then I love to share it with others. Montana is, to me, the most wonderful place in the US and the Bitterroot has the best weather in Montana, so what a good idea to have a vacation home here. We are near the Bitterroot River and that has always been a big attraction for guests, especially those interested in fly fishing..
Most people are blown away by the sheer beauty of this home and property, and I invite you to come and be my guest for a delightful getaway.
This house is not just a house. It is sitted on a hill with panoramic views of the bitteroots and some of Montana's beautiful mountain. Every morning we were greeted by this beautiful landscape while sipping our coffee but also while brushing our teeth. This house has a soul. And a good one. As soon as you enter you feel at home. It welcomes you to stay in and relax. Every corner has been thoughtfully planned. It is both beautiful and useful. I did not know I would be happy to see so many bathroom but they were so many and all so different that i made a point to try each one of them. We were 8 to live in this house. We loved it so much we extended our stay. Peggy, the artist who created this house is the perfect host. She is both present if you want her to be or non visible if you prefer to have the place to you. We all loved her we would have happily taken her with us back to the east coast.
If you want a wonderful experience rent this house.
Trying to capture in words the beauty of Stonetower Estate is like trying to describe the breath taking beauty of the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. The whole property is a brilliant work of art - the stone tower, the gardens, the views, the ethereal location - all of it extraordinary and in each detail the obvious care of an artist's unique touch. I can't imagine getting married in a more special or memorable place. Definitely an experience that will stay with you as much as the magnificent frescoes of Michelangelo.
It is indeed a pleasure to review Stonetower Estate. We just spent four nights there as we attended a horse photography workshop – long days which meant that we didn’t get to spend nearly enough time enjoying this lovely home. That means that a return visit will be in order.
The house is beautiful! It’s different, it’s wonderful, it’s quirky (in a good way), it’s elegant and tasteful … and then downright fun and whimsical (like the “tree people”). And one of my favourite features of the house -- the very cool stone bathroom on the ground floor – like showering in a cave (kind of sexy). Very clean and comfortable … everything thought of.
The views are spectacular – from the windows and from the deck. The deck is wonderful. You can see the valley and the mountains. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular from this house.
The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens, meticulously cared for by the owner. She is gracious and generous in offering you things from her garden.
Yes, as a previous reviewer noted, Peggy, the owner does live in the basement. So what? She does so quietly and unobtrusively and she is an absolute delight. She is one of the most interesting people we’ve met in a long time. As well as being a stone mason (she built the house), she is an artist – a potter of note. There are many lovely pieces of her work throughout the house. Having Peggy on site is, in our opinion, a real asset. She is charming and helpful, but is never in the way.
The house is out of the way (though not by much), but that only adds to the appeal. Follow your directions carefully – it’s approximately fifteen minutes from Highway 93, a lot of it on dirt roads, and you might find yourself frequently asking “Are you sure …?” But once you arrive, and see the beautiful stone arch, you’ll know that you’ve arrived at a very special place. The peace and serenity of this amazing property are worth the drive. In all, you would be about half an hour from Hamilton, which has all the amenities you would need.
The kitchen is well appointed and you can cook some wonderful meals there to be enjoyed in lovely surroundings.
And the horses!
As others have said, the pictures, although spectacular, don’t begin to do it justice. We travel a fair bit, and stay almost exclusively in VRBOs. We would have to say that this incredible home in its surroundings is right at the top of our list. Can't wait to return!
We spent four days at Stonetower to celebrate my stepson's wedding and hosted the rehearsal dinner (60 people) in the finished barn. The house, apartment, and barn are great facilities for anyone wanting to have a social gathering, and Peggy has party tables, chairs and decorations, so the rehearsal dinner was quite easy to set up. The house and apartment were clean with well-equipped kitchens, lots of beds and space, and numerous fascinating artistic flourishes. The deck was a great place to enjoy the summer evenings and mountain views. Stonetower was just the right place for us to enjoy with family and friends--thanks to Peggy for making the experience so much fun and being so welcoming.
My daughter found Stonetower Estates online as she searched for a venue for her wedding. We visited with a couple of feet of snow and it was still the perfect setting!
The groom's family rented the house and we rented the barn. Peggy was very gracious as we descended on Thursday to bake cupcakes in the gorgeous kitchen, we had lots of space to cool and then decorate. The rehearsal dinner was hosted in the main house with beautiful views and lots of space. The bride had chosen the tower for the bridesmaids to use for getting ready for the wedding and again it was like a storytale.
We used the garden for the ceremony, with the bride entering from the lower garden up the rock path....gorgeous! The barn was in full use for the reception, with catered food, dancing, and even a photo booth in the stall.
We were SOOO pleased with this rental! The main house is so unique with all its stonework we couldn't quit oohing and ahhing at every turn. Peggy was easily available and worked hard to see that our needs were met!
Thank you Peggy for a wonderful celebration!
We rented the Stonetower Estate to house several members of my family for my brother's wedding. It was perfect for us. My family, which has 3 small children, stayed in the downstairs room and sitting room. Peggy was great and had a pack and play and highchair ready for us. My parents stayed in the master suite upstairs and an additional couple stayed on the third floor. The barn was perfect for my grandmother, two aunts, and cousin. It was nice to be together but have space.
First of all, you CAN'T beat the views of this house. I really think they may be the best views in the Bitterroot. I would rent this house again based on the beauty of these 10 acres alone! My kids could not get enough of Peggy's two horses. It was fun for us city folk to have horses on the property.
I was a little surprised to find when we got there that the owner lives on site. She stays in the basement, which has its own entrance. Don't get me wrong, Peggy could not be nicer or more helpful but for me, I always like to feel like I own a house when I'm on vacation. We do enjoy staying in bed and breakfasts from time to time and this definitely had that feel, without the breakfast! Peggy spent quite a bit of time working in the garden. She always welcomed us to come and enjoy it but it was hard to completely feel like it was our own.
Another thing to note that while the first floor of this house is great for young children, the second and third are absolutely not. The (gorgeous) stairs that lead to the second floor have only a partial railing for the top half. If you have a new walker, crawler or just a dare devil child, you will need to make sure they stay on the first floor.
The rooms on the second and third floor do not have doors. When you walk up this stairs to the second floor, you can see directly into the shower of the master suite. We rigged a blanket over the shower so you could not see in. We had snorers staying on the second floor and the third floor couple had to use their earplugs.
This is a very beautiful and unusual house. There is a lot of wood work throughout. It's amazing, to say the least. In the kitchen, you will be greeted every morning by a tree man and a tree woman. And yes, you will be able to tell that one is a man and one is a woman. This provided many fun conversations for 4 generations of family being together!
Again, 5 stars, regardless of these little nuisances. BEAUTIFUL! Can't be beat. Would definitely rent again!
