Photos and Description of the Gizeux vacation farmhouse rental

Nestled in the picturesque Loire Valley, a World Heritage Site described by UNESCO as “an exceptional cultural landscape, of great beauty, comprised of historic cities and villages, great architectural monuments—the Châteaux—and lands. . .”,

Le Moulin Brégeon is an elegant 18th century Water Mill that has been restored into a bed and breakfast in perfect harmony with rural French culture.

Jonathan Robinson, calls himself an 'Aesthetic Refugee', an American painter and the owner of the Moulin said. ''My dream is to help them preserve their traditions. The kind of beauty you see in the Loire Valley is . . . a different kind of pleasure because it's enriching to all the senses.'

The property itself is truly magical. Most guests feel they have been transported to another place in time.

5 suites with garden views including an outbuilding cottage house. Two rooms are ground level, so you can step out from your own door, and other three rooms are upper floor. Every rooms are decorated with tasteful antique furniture and art of decorations ... Every room has a cozy bathtub except a cottage house.

Luxuriously appointed with traditional furniture, fine art, and French antiques, Le Moulin Brégeon’s impeccable interior has been featured in several design books and magazines. Each suite welcomes guests with unique antiques, fresh flowers, and fine hand-crafted linens. Colorful tiles rescued from old chateaux decorate the floor of each suite’s bath, and for your toilette, Le Moulin Brégeon provides Martin de Candre artisanal soaps from the Domaine de Mestré workshop.

Evenings at Le Moulin Brégeon promise a meal fit for an epicure, with cuisine that mirrors the retreat’s charming sophistication and joie de vivre. Individually prepared by resident Chef Pascal Merrilou, the gourmet dinners and breakfasts at Le Moulin Brégeon are crafted with a noble philosophy: fine food must come from fine ingredients. Chef Merillou uses produce from the Moulin's organic gardens, eggs laid by Moulin’s geese, and game and fish from local farms and streams. Chef Merrilou’s artful cuisine is paired with fine wines of the region for the perfect touch to a quintessentially French experience.

Several villages and chateaux near us. These are all attractive monuments and are not in the usual tourist guides. There is the museum of Jules de Bois not far away, there is a 15 century church In Mouliherne (a neighboring village). Just a short walk from Moulin Bregeon is the small town of Liniéres Bouton, the manor of Napoleon's great, treat grandniece, and the church in our village is 12th century and the chateau 15th century as well. Explore the local scenery and villages on bikes and it is all very impressive.

Most of our clients come here by either rail or auto. We will be glad to help you with your travel arrangements: plane or train ticket reservations and car or bike rentals.

By Rail

Fast train service (TGV) is available to Saumur via Tours, St. Pierre des Corps, or Angers St. Laud. From Paris, the train takes about two hours. Upon request, guests will be picked up at the Saumur train station and brought to the Moulin.

Bon Voyage!

About Etsuko Coiffet

I am a coordinating / marketing director and working with Jonathan Robison who is a founder of Le Moulin Bregeon. Jonathan Scott Robinson was born in Chicago, Illinois. He went on to study at the University of California at Berkeley where he received three degrees in Painting: a Bachelor, a Master and a Master of Fine Arts (the highest degree attainable in the arts). While working on his Master’s degree, he received a grant which allowed him to live in Berlin for two years and study painting in European museums.

Jonathan’s food and cooking experience goes back to his Berkeley days, where he was a member of the Berkeley Food Conspiracy. For three years, he worked as a cook at the Swallow Restaurant Collective started by Ruth Reichl, editor of Gourmet Magazine.

In 1984, Jonathan received a prestigious studio grant at Cité Internationale des Arts and moved to Paris. In 1985, he returned to Germany and worked in an artist group for two years. His work has been shown in major galleries all over Europe and the USA. He has taught in The Free Art School of Bremen Vegsagt, The Art Institute of San Francisco, Parsons School of Design in Paris and The Ecole des Beaux Arts in Angers, France.

In 1991, Jonathan bought a authentic 19th century water mill in Linières Bouton in the Loire Valley. Using the work of local artisans, he has painstakingly restored the mill in harmony with French rural architecture and culture.

Why Etsuko Coiffet chose Gizeux

Robinson never intended to do anything more than continue painting (his work has been shown in some of the world's most prestigious galleries, from New York to Cologne) and transform his old wreck of a mill, Le Moulin Brégeon, into a luxurious compound of traditional buildings for visiting Francophiles.

But watching his beloved France succumb to what Robinson considers the worst of modernism spurred him into action.

''A bell jar made of glass, cement, and steel is descending on France,' Robinson said. ''It's going to suffocate the visual beauty and poetry of the country.'

The defense of France is as important as ...

''France represents a biodiversity of beauty. The French really thought about the idea of beauty, with all their senses. You see it in their food, their wine, their architecture, their furniture. They even manipulated their language so it would sound pleasing to the ear. And I see it being erased,' he said.

Surprisingly, Robinson's passion has struck a chord among the notoriously imperious French.

''We urge him on and we're behind him,' says Dominique Tronca, 47, an Association MB member who belongs to a six-centuries-old artisan guild and specializes in traditional woodworking. ''He has the passion to speak up that we don't have. We think our way of life is coming to an end but we don't know what to do about it.'

Guests at Le Moulin Brégeon cannot help but absorb some of the proprietor's passion for French tradition and culture. The mill, which has five guest suites with private bathrooms, sits on 20 acres of streams, gardens, trails, and bike paths in the middle of quiet countryside, miles from town. The mill was rebuilt in the 19th century, but when Robinson began renovations, he found traces of an old monastery beneath the foundation dating to the 15th century.

- The Loire Valley (French: Vallée de la Loire) is located in the middle stretch of the Loire River in central France. Its area comprises about 800 square kilometres (310 sq mi). It is referred to as the Cradle of the French Language, and the Garden of France due to the abundance of vineyards, fruit orchards (such as cherries), and artichoke and asparagus fields, which line the banks of the river. Notable for its historic towns, architecture and wines. In 2000, UNESCO added the central part of the Loire River valley to its list of World Heritage Sites.
