My husband and I live in the Twin Cities and own a small custom home, remodel and design company for the past 30 years. We enjoy traveling, fishing, boating, gardening, and anything that has to do with 'creating' something.
Jan purchased this house in 2004
We fell in love with the area upon our first visit there, which was due to a job transfer in1974. We thought that we had died and gone to heaven as the rolling hills and bluffs were just so beautiful. We also fell in love with the Mississippi River and officially became 'river rats' or ones who can't get enough of the river, love the fact that it is ever changing, ever powerful, always beautiful, abundant with wildlife, and there are always fish to be caught in it! At that time we said that we would love to retire in the area someday. As 'someday' started getting closer, we started looking in the area for a vacation home that could eventually become our retirement home. It took some time, but we finally found it! The fact that the home was pretty bland looking inside, at that time, just make it more exciting for us as we knew that we would be able to turn it into something beautiful.
You can't help but be mesmerized by the views, whether from the front yard, back yard, deck, patio, dock or the house. The Mississippi River and surrounding bluffs are beautiful and the home is a warm and inviting place in which to enjoy it all. There is nothing better than starting the morning with a cup of coffee on the deck or dock and listening to the birds sing.
Jan - I didn't realize I had to create an account in order to post a review. We loved your place, but I do not join websites. Just hate all the spam, etc from it.
I will post a review right here and perhaps you could somehow post it?
Arrived: Nov. 27, 2013
Our extended family stayed at the Lodge for a week at Thanksgiving and boy, were we glad we did. The place is terrific. Well-decorated, cozy, comfy common areas and everything we needed for cooking and serving a big Thanksgiving feast. The river view is amazing; each morning we watched several eagles conduct their morning hunt over the Mississippi. We even got a little fishing in ourselves. Enjoyed morning walks along the River and had a great November picnic at the Buena Vista park above Alma. We couldn't have had a more relaxing, enjoyable Holiday. And, Jan's festive decorations added a lovely touch to the festivities. I couldn't recommend the Lodge more. It's especially nice for large groups. Stay here- you won't be disappointed.
Decided on a last minute getaway and could not have been happier with our decision to stay in this beautiful home. It's as pretty as the pictures! We had quite cool weather, but still managed to do a little fishing off the dock and even caught a few fish that we cooked up for dinner. The home itself was warm and inviting, very clean, well maintained, well equipped, and had beautiful river and bluff views from nearly every window. We particularly enjoyed the stone fireplaces and hot chocolate this time of the year! Jan is very sweet, she'll make sure that you have everything needed for a great getaway. Definatly will be returning.
We so enjoyed our days at your home. It was a very beautiful area and your home was built and decorated perfectly for the area. We all had a wonderful time looking at photos from that week, many memories! House had everything we needed and then some. Plenty of space to play with dogs or do outdoor activites. We brought our dogs, small kids, and boat and had a very enjoyable stay.
We had another wonderful get-together with family at the Lodgehouse. The weather wasn't great, but that was a great excuse to spend time enjoying each other and the beautiful home! It was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and very comfy. Jan really makes you feel welcome. We found plenty of games and puzzles to enjoy, as well.
No stay is complete without the "Best Ribs on the River" at a quaint place in Nelson ( J&J Bar-b-que, I think) and breakfast at Peir 4, just feet from the train tracks in Alma, though we don't recommend taking the 3 pound pancake challenge!! Cooking in is also very convenient and enjoyable.
Can't wait to return next year.
There were four of us couples, and we had a great time fishing, swimming, biking, boating, kayaking, shopping, playing games, bird watching, and hiking the bluff overlooks. The house and property is clean and well-maintained with plenty of room to spread out and enjoy quiet time. Jan and Jim were perfect rental hosts, explaining the details of the property when we arrived and following up with us while we were there. We enjoyed the apples and tomatoes, freshly picked each day. It was interesting to watch the barges go through the locks. It was surprising to some of us that the Mississippi River has so many sand beaches to pull up to in our pontoon and swim. We've rented many vacation homes in the past and this is one of the nicest.
Wow! We were impressed and excited from the moment we walked in the door and found the Lodgehouse to be everything we wanted and more during our stay.
We spent the week of Thanksgiving by fishing, cuddling by the fireplace (inside and out), playing games, and making many memories.
The Lodgehouse is decorated as cozy as a home with a cabin feel and had all the amenities for our stay and a Thanksgiving feast. We are already planning our next trip.
The peaceful riverside location is perfect for fishing, boating, canoeing, swimming, Eagle watching, or just relaxing. The area's natural beauty makes it a great place to bike, hike, golf, cross-country ski or take a scenic drive beneath towering bluffs, through picturesque valleys. Visit historic riverside towns with their quaint shops, restaurants, and wineries or watch barges as they navigate through the locks and dams of the Mighty Mississippi River.
