Tampa Bungalow Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths. sleeps 4

We designed Erehwon Retreat for niche markets, working professional or retireee's who can get away for one to two weeks in the winter and northern europeans and south of the equator (their winter) summer visitors. Year Round the Bungalow is only available with a minimum five or seven (+) night ane a maximum stay of 14 nights. As this property is the private home of the proprietor it is never made available for periods less than the minimum stay. Similarly we are seldom able to consider monthly rentals as this is a proprietor occupied property.

Our couples/partner oriented home and its antique decor is only appropriate for adults.

Occupancy laws and historic neighborhood density do not permit us to rent to more than four people.

This home has 1578 sq-ft interior with 10-ft high ceilings, a massive fireplace, refinished orginal heart pine floors, fresh paint, attic insulation, all new wiring, drapes in both bedrooms and dining room, and roman blinds in the living room. Living and dining rooms are open to one another, but separated by a curved arch. A classic swinging door opens to a kitchen with 33' 4-burner gas range, EnergyStar dishwasher and refrigerator (33').

Porch life: The exterior features an L-shaped front porch which provides a setting to enjoy the native plant landscaping, which requires minimal water. A pergola gate and custom craftsman fence includes ceramic tile art along the walkway on the north side of the home and adjoining owner office and cottage.

Perfect spot for the serious reader: Erehwon Retreat Bungalow is the perfect vacation for the serious reader - on our bookshelves are the 20 volume Worlds Greatest Literature - Harvard Classics, the entire works of William Shakespeare, interesting tomes on the Craftsman period along with all kinds of travel books on 'old central; Florida' and literally hundreds of DVD's highlighting great films, children's classics and best of British Film making.

Why Henry Young, Jr. chose Tampa

During my childhood our family lived in an Craftsman Bungalow on Las Robles Ave in Pasadena, CA. Later we moved to an apartment building overlooking Central Park in Manhattan. My late mother reminded me that I always talked of the Bungalow and encouraged me to consider restoring one at some point in my life and in 2007, I purchased this property in Tampa's Historic District Old Seminole Heights.

What makes this bungalow unique

Erehwon Retreat is landscaped with native plants which have been growing in Florida for thousands of years without human intervention. We are committed to providing the natural food, shelter, and nesting plants of local wildlife. Visiting in fall and spring, you will see hundreds of birds, butterflies, and a wide variety of crucially important insect pollinators looking for our native plants for predictable sources of nectar, berries, insects and firm branches in which to hide their nests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Henry was out of town and the WIFI was not working. We called the owner and he was "on Brighthouse" to get it working within a day. After that things were terrific and Henry's Assistant Nicole could not have been more helpful and agreeable. Our first two days we have rather rainy weather but after that our next week was beautiful. My wife and I had a great time exploring the neighborhood. Our diners at "the Refinery" were very eclectic and good. Henry's thoughtful provisioning of basics was terrific. The beds and linens were the best, as were the towels. We were sorry to have missed meeting Henry, but he was grabbing some vacation time as well.

Charming Bungalow in Convenient Location

  • 4 of 5
This charming bungalow has been carefully restored and furnished to replicate the period in which it was built. However, one aspect of the furnishings, which are quite lovely, is that there are no light fixtures sufficiently bright for reading, which can be trying.
The proprietor supplies lots of lovely amenities (shower gels, soaps, etc.); lists of attractions and nearby restaurants with descriptions and contact information; and, a thoughtfully stocked refrigerator with initial amounts of basic provisions. Also, there are an amazing number of small appliances available for the preparation of various types of meals. However, one curious omission is that there was no microwave, which made re-heating items difficult and was inconvenient. Access to a washer and dryer was very handy and a big plus.
Once the WiFi service was repaired, we had a lovely stay in a very interesting part of the city. The woman who was our contact for any questions, could not have been nicer and went out of her way to be helpful.
I would definitely recommend staying here.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. It's totally correct and appreciate your feedback. However as you know I run a fundraising consultant business which has taken me to many places including Belarus where I consulted with the Belarusian Childrens Fund and the Belarusian Pediatric Oncology Hospital both dealing with the impact of Chernobyl, the largest man-made nuclear catastrophe. Having worked in Belarus on extended stays, I was advised to very conscious of receiving additional radiation and specifically advised not use a Microwave. As the Bungalow is my private home much of the year and we post exactly what is in the home I just want to advise its absence is intentional, not an oversight.

lovely home and setting

  • 5 of 5
We very much enjoyed our stay. It was great to have a comfortable, beautifully appointed home to return to at the end of our long conference days. If you have a way to bring a bike with you, it makes a nice 20-25 minute ride downtown to the conference centre, Ybor City and other central locations.

Owner's Response: Alison, Happy to have you at Erehwon. Sorry to have been so busy preparing for my vacation that we didn't find the opportunity to discuss the conference. I should mention we have bike riders who visit primarily for the Cross Florida and Pinellas County bike paths. The City of Tampa is making more bike lanes available each year as well, so its becoming quite an interest area.

Peaceful!

  • 5 of 5
The bungalow is as beautiful as the pictures online, and meticulously clean! The beds are super comfortable and the neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. It's safe to get out and walk around and only three blocks to The Front Porch, that is a gem!

Owner's Response: Thanks Carla, It was lovely to have you and your husband with us. There's something particularly gratifying when I see historic curiosity and discovery when I walk guests thru the Bungalow and I see relaxation setting in within hours of arrival. Great to have Southern IL represented on my history of guests map.

Lovely, But With Flaws

  • 3 of 5
Feb 4, 2013 through Feb 11, 2013

My sisters and I rented this bungalow after seeing it on this website. We read the reviews and it seemed to be a lovely place to stay as the pictures indicated. The Bungalow preserved from the 1920’s, was perfectly restored. It was decorated in the style of the time and had beautiful furniture, lamps and pottery on display. The owner, who lives next door was very nice and had suggestions for where we could eat and recommended sights in the area to see. We discovered the next morning while having our Starbucks on the patio (the coffee maker was broken) that the landlord’s office faced where we sat and he seemed to observe us while working on his computer. He came out to visit, which was fine, but we became uncomfortable with him being a constant presence while we were outside. We felt we were being watched the entire week we were there. He even mentioned to us after we told him we had returned from a walk, “I know, I was watching you.” The stone steps leading to the patio were unstable causing us to wobble a bit. Our stay at the bungalow was comfortable enough, but the lighting is almost as low in wattage as it would have been in the 1920’s. It was very difficult to read inside until the sun came up and impossible to read in bed at night. It was a nice return to the past but don’t expect to have all the creature comforts you are used to, such as chairs and couches that you can slouch on. The smaller bathroom is almost unusable for a grown adult, so the four of us had only one bathroom to share. Our toaster also broke within a few uses and both that and the coffee maker were replaced the day before we left. The TV base was broken as well, and propped up on some DVDs. The TV, as I understand it, has since also been replaced. The owner complained that we did not check out properly but we thought since he kept such a close eye on us, he was aware of all of our movements.

Owner's Response: The guest describes an unsatisfactory check out - who leaves the keys on a table, the doors unlocked and never discusses early departure, or even leaving a cell phone message. The result was someone robbed the home of its flat screen TV. During this guest stay, I was advised that the coffee maker, toaster did not work and they were replaced the next day. In addition they broke a wine glass. As for lighting, all overhead lights have a reostat in the wall switch, perhaps they didn't notice this.

I was advised one month prior to check in that one sister is somewhat disabled. She is not wheelchair bound but does have trouble going up and down stairs. We advised that the rear entrance uses stone paver stairs, the bath rooms both have shower/tubs and that one bath room was very small and provided the link to our website with the floor plan. I was very concerned that the renter did not advise me at the point of their inquiry that she had a member of your party with mobility issues and offered to refund the bungalow fees suggesting a hotel would be better suited to her requirements. Our office does look out on the deck but during their entire stay they were comfortable enough to have breakfast on the deck in their sleepwear and our luxury robes.

Erehwon Retreat defines relaxation on an otherwise hectic business trip....

  • 5 of 5
I have to admit, when I first checked into Erehwon Retreat, a 1920's era bungalow on the outskirts of downtown Tampa, I was a bit unsure of my initial decision. After all, I was in Tampa for business and this place, in an up-and-coming older neighborhood, was a bit off of the beaten path. Boy, did I leave with an altogether different impression! The house was full of antiques and architectual appointments, which certainly set the ambience. However, behind the 1920's appearance, modern conveniences abound. The thick, plush mattresses in each bedroom were dressed with Egyptian cotton linens. A towel warmer graced the master bath. Plenty of bath provisions, including high-end body wash and shampoo were included. The kitchen was equally as impressive, and amazingly stocked with cereal, spices, soda, butter, tea, coffee, liquor (No, I'm not kidding!), mixers, food products and on and on and on....There was more cookware than you could ever require, antique china and crystalware, sterling silver cordial cups, coffee mugs of every dimension and so much more. Although I didn't get much use out of it, there is a lovely wood deck attached to the house with a resident kitty who spends a lot of time keeping you company. About the only shortcomings were a rather outdated TV (with no ESPN), reduced water pressure (particularly evident on the shower) and a coffee press, furnished in lieu of a real coffee maker. Henry (the owner) swore by the French Coffee Press, but after drinking several cups of luke warm coffee and then having to clean the press, I found my Mr. Coffee to be far more efficient. If you want a coffee maker, you will have to go about 2 miles to the Walmart Supermarket and buy one, as I took the one that I purchased home with me. But, these "shortcomings" are mentioned more for informational purposes, and did almost nothing to diminish my overall positive experience. Coming home after a long day of work, turning on the salsa music and grilling a steak on the brand new gas range beat the hell out of being cooped up in a 300 square foot hotel room. This place is flat out, relaxing. You will, guarenteed, leave this bungalow with less stress than when you came. As a matter of fact, I found myself looking forward to my next trip to the Tampa area so that I could stay here again. Henry, the owner, will bend over backwards to make your stay memorable. I have no doubt that the next renter will leave an equally enthusiastic review. Kudos to Erehwon Retreat!

Owner's Response: Robert,

Many thanks for your thoughtful review. So interesting about the French Press, I have added a Brewmaster for those who want drip coffee. TV is a Flat screen now, remember that you asked if I could open a few days early for your stay. With your five night stay, I so value the insights for our first review of the Bungalow. Many thanks. Hope your travels bring you back to Tampa next year.
