About Judy Atwood

Anita M. Smith was born in Philadelphia in 1893. She was a Quaker and her family were part of the crème de la crème of Philadelphia society. By the time she reached the age of 19 she had already been on 3 major world tours. In 1912 she came to Woodstock with money intended for a ball gown, to study painting at the Art Students League Summer School. In the 1930s she shifted gears and began an herbalism business. Anita’s flourishing enterprise was based in Herb Cottage—and she sold her products in all 48 contiguous United States. Her business was one of four like it located on the East Coast. It was so successful that H.J. Heinz came calling. However, with the onset of World War II she changed course once again. It was a time of self-sacrifice, and so she offered space on her property to the town’s plane spotting unit—and became the Chief Observer. The barn building next to Rock City Writer’s Studio is all that remains of this structure. After the war, she began work on Woodstock History and Hearsay, the town’s first history, and this was published in 1959.

The current owners met Anita Smith as children in 1957. She supported their mother’s creativity and lent her an old studio (now styled as Rock City Writer’s Studio). This allowed her to work on her plays in peace—away from family interference. In turn, their mother became like a daughter to Anita, and assisted her in the final stages of writing the first edition of Woodstock History and Hearsay. Miss Smith left her estate to their mother: physical and intellectual property. When their mother passed in 1999 they jointly inherited the house, outbuildings, grounds and intellectual property. After much thought and discussion they resolved to honor Anita and their mother through a program of restoration. Further, they determined to embrace and celebrate a mindset and way of living that had been handed down to them from Anita. This was the genesis of their company, WoodstockArts (http://www.woodstockarts.com).

Beautiful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at the Herb Cottage was wonderful. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and well kept. It had everything we needed for a quite weekend getaway from the city. The owners provide you with all the essentials to plan your weekend from flashlights to a book full of local attractions and hiking trails. The cottage is surrounded by lush trees and is very quite. It is a quick drive into Woodstock town center, which has many local shops and restaurants. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a retreat from busy life. We certainly plan to visit again soon.

Our new home away from home!

  • 5 of 5
Five stars are not enough to express what a great stay we had at the Herb Cottage. The house was immaculate and exactly as pictured/described, and an ideal place to spend our first visit to the beautiful little town of Woodstock. We lucked into nearly perfect weather for our five-day vacation, but still spent a lot of our time indoors because the cottage is just that comfortable! We are especially grateful that we could bring our furry companion, Dexter, who seldom gets to travel and really enjoyed his time away from home.

For first-time visitors to the area, there is such a wealth of things to see and do, though we can't recommend many restaurants because we did most of our own cooking (and nearby Sunflower Market has everything you'll need if you love to cook like we do). Catskill Mountain Pizza Company is awesome if you want to order in, and we had an excellent outdoor lunch at Yum Yum Noodle Bar.

We also drove to several of the neighboring towns, like Saugerties and Kingston, and hiked in some parks, including Minnewaska and the Walkway over the Hudson (both are a bit of a drive from Woodstock, and very popular, but if you're new to the area like we were they are a must).

We looked at a lot of properties in the region, and the Herb Cottage seemed almost too good to be true, but there's simply no way we could have found a better place to stay. We loved the wood stove, even when it wasn't really cold enough to use it! The cottage has all the comforts of home, while still maintaining just enough "rustic" charm. It was the best vacation we've ever had together, and we will definitely be back!!!

Adorable Cottage

  • 5 of 5
From the moment my husband and I walked in we loved the Herb Cottage. It was cozy and cute and had everything that we needed. We saw deer in the back yard and many birds. It was nice to have the private little back yard area to sit and grill or enjoy a meal.
It was great to have Woodstock within walking or short driving distance. It is a fun little town with shops and restaurants to check out. We had delicious meals at Bear Cafe and Cucina, drinks at Landau Grill, and great ice cream at Taco Juans (get the Jane's Homeade flavors). We made a few meals in too which was nice to stay in and relax after a day of hiking. Not much for nightlife around if that is what you are looking for.
We hiked Kaaterskill Falls top and bottom, which was short but neat. Overlook was also a nice hike and its views from the top of the fire tower were great. And the trailhead is just up the road from the Herb Cottage so it was so close. We also did Giant Ledge/Panther Mountain and Twin Mountain. The Herb Cottage was a great place to stay for convenience and a short drive to so many different areas to hike and little towns to see. I highly recommend this cottage for a great place to stay in the area.

The Cottage of our dreams

  • 5 of 5
The Herb Cottage was absolutely the perfect getaway. My boyfriend and I stayed for 4 blissful nights. We were greeted by Judy who was warm and welcoming who provided us with history of the cottage recommendations for hikes, restaurants, grocery stores and, other neighboring towns to visit. The cottage is located minutes from the main street of Woodstock that has plenty to offer. The cottage was very quaint, cozy and clean. It's on a very quiet road with gorgeous trees surrounding the cottage. It was so lovely to have crickets sing you to sleep in the king sized bed. They provide plenty of towels and cozy socks to wear around the cottage. We loved the dvd collection that was alphabetized. The kitchen has everything you need and we especially enjoyed using the grill in the backyard. As for activities we hiked Overlook Mountain which is a 5 min drive from cottage. This is a must do! The view is spectacular. We drove about 20 min to hike the Kaaterskill Falls which are also something to experience. What we also loved about the Catskill mountains was that we were able to find random watering holes and take a dip. We also visited the town of Phonecia to get breakfast at Sweet Sue's. All we have to say is PANCAKES! The Herb Cottage is extremely central to all of these magical places and we were so happy with our decision to make it our first Homeaway stay. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone who is looking for a relaxing vacation where you can reconnect with yourself in nature and all its glory.

The perfect Retreat for Rest and Rejuvenation!

  • 5 of 5
From the moment I walked into the Herb Cottage to the moment I left, I felt right at home. There was not one detail that was missed in preparing this cottage for the perfect retreat! I wanted to go hiking; there were maps, books and suggestions on hiking. I was interested in the history of the area; there were books and brochures filling me in! I wanted to make meals for myself everyday; the kitchen was fully stocked with everything I could have needed. The decor and the furniture was so clean and nicely appointed! Every detail had been so well thought out. Even the large, comfy chairs swiveled so I could choose between reading in the sitting area or turn to enjoy a movie (of which so many were provided!!)
Being able to walk a half mile down into the historic town of Woodstock was also a plus! I was close enough to walk to town but it also felt good to get back 'home' to my quiet and secluded spot at the base of the incredible Overlook Mountain!! (You must hike this mountain! The views will take your breath away!!)
I wish I could make a suggestion of some sort on how to make this sweet Cottage better, but there was simply nothing left undone. I didn't want for one thing.
(I even forgot my laptop at home and Chelsea made outside arangements to her schedule to personally deliver my computer safely to the cottage.)
I have two words for those of you considering Herb Cottage: Reserve Now!!

Adorable Herb Cottage

  • 5 of 5
My partner and I came up for a four-day weekend with our dog and had a wonderful time. We have stayed at numerous places in the Woodstock/Phoenicia/Saugerties area over the years both remote and close to town, and this is our favorite.

The cottage is exactly as presented in the photos--clean and quiet with plenty of room to spread out. The owners have thought of everything people would need to make their stay pleasant and relaxing--there are fluffy towels, an extremely comfortable mattress with plenty of bedding for chilly mountain nights, a fan for the occasional warm summer night, husbands to prop yourself up while reading, an old-fashioned tub for a soak, swivel chairs so you can face or not face the television depending on your mood and activity of choice, numerous table and floor lamps for nigh time reading, and plenty of dishes if you choose to cook or grill during your stay. We also enjoyed the video and DVD library as well as the collection of board games.

The book of instructions regarding how to access the WiFi, operate the wood stove and the gas grill, use the various cable and TV remotes, and dispose of recyclables and garbage was both comprehensive and crystal clear. All of our needs and questions were anticipated and addressed.

The house is half a mile from Main Street in Woodstock, so you can either walk or drive. The agent met us at the house upon our arrival and gave us excellent tips regarding where to eat out and where to get groceries.

We will definitely go back!
