Great stay in Georgetotwn Townhouse

  • 5 of 5
We, a family of 4, finished our Virginia/Washington DC tour in Georgetown, staying in this great townhouse for 5 nights.
Everything was perfect, key easy to find, and house as we had hoped, a real historic townhouse in historic area. Beds etc comfortable and all needs of our group well catered for. House is a 5 minute walk to downtown main street in Georgetown with great dining and shopping. Great base also for running in Creek Park and for touring DC itself (recommend Big Bus Tours).
We would be happy to recommend this property for a family.

Pros and Cons

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I stayed for 1 month. If they were able to do 1/2 stars, this would have been rated 3 1/2 stars.

The Pros - 5 stars
We enjoyed the location of the house. The park, the tennis courts, M Street, and the ease of walking to Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom metro stops. The WiFi in the house was excellent (it allowed me to work efficiently) and the bedrooms were spacious. The management team was super nice and professional. The house is great for a short stay.

The Cons - 2.5 stars
The furniture is not comfortable. The sofa, beds, pillows - everything. The TV is too small - like 17 inches. There are only beds for 4 people (2 twin plus 1 double). There are 2 thin futon mattresses that can be laid on the floor (not sleep sofa/futon as advertised). There isn't enough comfortable seating in the living room for even 4 people. The kitchen is small, but if given a choice, we'd rather have a normal size TV and a comfy sofa.

I wrote the owner a note suggesting that some of these changes be made. If she could promise to upgrade at least the TV and living room furniture, I would absolutely rent this house again. Sadly, she said no changes would be made until 2016.

If you want to veg out after a long day of touring the city, this is not the place for you. If you're staying for longer than a week, this is not the place for you. If you have more than a family of 4, this is not the place for you. At least, not until 2016.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your helpful feedback. Indeed, the sofa and the TV do needs upgrades, and they’re on their way now. I’m looking into upgrading other furniture too – and now, not in 2016 (I’m sorry if there was a misunderstanding, I do want to improve the apartment right away).

Negative experience from someone who has stayed at many other VRBOS

  • 1 of 5
positives:
+ location
+ pet friendly
negatives
- uncomfortable bed and furniture
- stuffy
- unprofessional
- key problems
- unclear instructions
- difficult parking
- poor customer service
- steep stairs
The location of the house is great and it was dog friendly--but those were the only real selling points.
It's a great home base for exploring DC. But part of the reason we rented a house vs. a nearby hotel is we wanted a place where we could relax and work from home if necessary. However, the furniture and bedding is not comfortable at all (the couch is old and hard and the bed was small and uncomfortable) and the lighting is bad (there's literally one Ikea desk lamp lighting the entire upstairs bedroom).
Aside from comfort issues, we had other troubles with this house, largely involving its management. Upon driving in around 9 p.m. the first night, we literally spent 15 minutes trying to get into the house because the key did not work.
We were trying to decide whether to call the police or locksmith when finally we were able to jiggle the key in such a manner that it worked. There was a key inside that worked pretty well, but the key left for us was practically inoperable. Once we finally got in, the house was incredibly stuffy, which made is super hard to breathe. The only generic note left for us mentioned cleaning out the hair from the shower and collecting the owners'
mail (I guess they still live there?). There was no mention about air conditioning, and we could not find the thermostat. In the bathroom there was no soap, only an empty dispenser. There were hairs in the bathtub. There was no shampoo. Meanwhile, we had to go out late at night to buy soap and shampoo. We also had to go to the police department to get our parking permit. The owner had said via email we had to show up in person to get parking.
The police told us the homeowner had to be there to request the permit. Luckily street parking was free at night, and we were able to find a parking space by the house for the evening, but it was a huge pain to go to the police station in the mid of the night and not get a permit. We emailed the owner and heard back the following day (she wasn't supposed to be in town). She said she thought they had fixed the lock and in "this isn't a hotel" re: no toiletries. She told us the AC location and bought shampoo and soap. We paid for 2 nites' parking until she went to get the permit-no offer to reimburse. Not what a VRBO should be.

Cozy townhouse

  • 3 of 5
The location is excellent. Situated in a quiet, interesting neighbourhood with tennis courts across the street. Subway system is about a 15 minute walk (no subways in Georgetown) but bike rentals and the bus only two minutes away. Lots of great restaurants.

Inside the decor is plain, but everything you need is there. However beware that the second bedroom is loft style with no door and open to the stairwell.

Only issues were related to payment. Owner would not accept credit card payment without paying extra fees. When I mailed a US$ cheque drawn on a US bank her bank refused the cheque triggering more fees that we had to pay (split 50/50) as the only way to make a quick payment was by credit card. Then the deposit cheque minus all the accumulated fees arrived June 26, not two weeks later as promised.

Also the dryer was a challenge as it did not heat on certain settings. The kitchen sink stopped working halfway through but a plumber was dispatched right away to fix it, very prompt response to this.

One other warning do not go into the backyard without a key or unlocking the door, the wind blew the door shut and we were stuck in the high fenced-in back yard until friends came to rescue us.

If you like jazz/blues, Blues Alley is very close. So the place is good overall.

Owner's Response: I’m so sorry you got stuck in the backyard! I’ve put up a sign by the door to make sure that doesn’t happen again. I’ve also had the dryer inspected and it’s now working reliably, thank you for pointing that out. And I’m sorry again about the difficulties of international banking! I’m often frustrated at how hard it is to deposit foreign checks, given international anti-laundering rules and difficult tax rules, but I’m looking into alternative methods that are more convenient to future tenants.

Location Location Location!

  • 5 of 5
Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this well-maintained, well-managed, and superbly located townhome. Located across the street from tennis courts and a nice park, and just a brief (and incredibly scenic) walk from the many shops and restaurants of Georgetown, this property is a wonderful vacation choice for first-time visitors, as well as former DC natives, like myself.

As an added bonus, your family will be endlessly amused watching the maneuverings of the round-the-clock Secret Service protection parked at the opposite corner (those big black Suburbans, and the guys with ear pieces and shades are a dead giveaway). Turns out this rental house is just down the road from the home of one of President Obama's cabinet members--we'd tell you which one, but that would spoil the fun of figuring it out on your own!

Owner's Response: Location is fundamental when you have a short vacation and you want to live like a resident. Walking to the shops on M Street or the metro at Dupont Circle and Fggy Bottom is so easy and very pleasant in every season. And, yes, security is no longer a problem in this area!

Winter fun in DC...

  • 5 of 5
My family of four and I spent a lovely week in DC at this Georgetown townhouse. It sits in a lovely quiet section of the city with easy foot access to the bustle of M street and Wisconsin in Georgetown. A very quick access to the Rock Creek trails as well as playgrounds and tennis courts directly across the street. Street parking was easy and obtaining a permit was a snap. (I even found an easy place to park on New Years Eve, a little bustlier than normal with folks out in Georgetown). The kitchen and bath met our needs and we ate all of our meals in the downstairs dining room. My boys enjoyed their top floor bedroom and we slept easily every night. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's required about a 15-20 minute walk and there was a convenience store around the corner for those last minute forgotten items. We walked everywhere! It probably took 35 minutes to walk to the Mall(Lincoln Memorial) and the same to the Zoo but it provided our exercise, and a few members of our party have rather short legs. We loved our trip and hope to return to experience the city in another season.

Owner's Response: Dear Tenant, we are glad that you enjoyed your vacation in DC and took advantage of all the potentials of this beautiful area of Georgetown. Please, do come back and experience another season, they are all beautiful, here in DC. Also, the program for the upcoming events at the Kennedy center is very appealing for both parents and children, maybe you want to try that...!
