Overview

Capitol Hill Apartment Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom apartment near all DC attractions and across the street from subway

Our newly-painted (no VOC paint!) 1-bedroom apartment can help you feel at home while visiting Washington, DC! With a full-kitchen and a location directly across the street from the Eastern Market Metro, consider yourself in the heart of Capitol Hill!

We have nearly 150 reviews. Please contact me to read them.

We have a newly-painted (no VOC paint!) 600-sq-foot, 1-br furnished, English basement apartment on Capitol Hill (Eastern Market) in Washington, DC. It has its own ingress (front door) and egress (back door) and is located beneath our Capitol Hill rowhome. We're a family of five: two adults and our three recently-adopted foster children, ages 4, 5, and 8. As we live above the apartment, you will hear us -- and we will likely hear you. It is city-living! (Our story was highlighted in Aug. 2012 in The Washington Post.)

We're situated on a residential street that mixes city-life with residential-life. We're less than 1 block from the Eastern Market Metro (you can see it from the front door!), and 1-4 blocks from numerous restaurants, bars, coffeeshops, etc. (on Pennsylvania Ave., SE as well as 8th Street SE, aka 'Barracks Row'). We're 7 blocks from the US Capitol and the Library of Congress; about 6 blocks from the Washington Navy Yard (ask about the 10% Active Duty / Retired Military discount we offer); about 12 blocks from Nationals Stadium; and about 9 blocks from the Folger Shakespeare Library. The National Mall (Smithsonian Museums) is easily accessible: it's either 4 Metro stops away (exiting at Smithsonian Station), or hopping on any 30s bus (our favorite).

This apartment has a Walk Score® of 91/100, Walkers' Paradise.

Capitol Hill really only has one hotel in this area: Capitol Hill Hotel. Check its prices to determine whether our apartment would be a good deal for you. (Interestingly, if you visit the website of that hotel, one of the pictures that it prominently displays on its website is a string of about 6 homes on our block -- the pink one on the far left is ours!)

Parking would be on-street parking but generally we're always able to find a spot on our block. If you request it, we can provide you a visitor's parking pass that will allow you to park without fear of being ticketed/towed. Our neighborhood in particular has quite restrictive parking restrictions unless you live here or have the aforementioned visitor's parking pass.

Additional perks that you'll find:

*fully-stocked kitchen -- cut your dining-out costs by cooking at home!

*wrap yourself up in our 100% cotton Kimpton Hotels thick and thirsty white terry Turkish bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths

*enjoy Westin Hotels' Heavenly Spa White Tea Aloe Travel Set, including White tea Aloe Shampoo, White Tea Aloe Conditioner, White Tea Aloe Body Lotion, and White Tea Aloe leaf-shared Bar Soap

*Keurig K-cup coffee maker, coffee maker, coffee grinder, and French press

*washer/dryer

*iron and ironing board

*cable television (29') with DVD player, including Roku and Hulu to watch streaming movies from Netflix

*wireless Internet

*some snacks provided

*some toiletries provided in case you forget yours!

*speaker set (with radio) for your iPhone

*iPhone, iPad and phone charging station

Our house (not this apartment) generates 68% of the house's energy through the 14 solar panels on our roof (one of the first solar installations on Capitol Hill!). The apartment has CFLs, a dual-flush toilet, Pella windows, and a Nest Learning Thermostat.

Additionally, the electricity is sourced from local wind farms through Clean Currents. We're in the process of slowly phasing out our regular cleaning supplies for more environmentally-friendly products. As DC can be hot and sticky and swampy in the summer, we have a mosquito service that comes every two weeks to spray for mosquitoes in our front yard and our back yard. We have the 'natural' treatment which consists of a garlic-based product that is safe for animals, kids, and plants.

For grocery stores, there is a 1) Yes Organic Market 2 blocks away; 2) Harris Teeter 7 blocks away; and 3) Safeway 10 blocks away. CVS, Starbucks, and Dunkin' Donuts are all within a 2-minute walk.

The apartment can conceivably sleep 6 people (but it's probably best for 4 or fewer): 2 on the QUEEN (this is new as of early November 2014!) bed in the bedroom; 2 on the full/double pull-out sofa in the living room; and 2 on the queen blow-up air mattress (which would be set up in the living room). We also have a pack-and-play available if requested.

Pets are allowed. No smoking or incense, please.

When you make your reservation, I'll provide you online access to our detailed, 31-page 'Tips & Tricks' book. You'll also have a hardcopy of this available upon check-in. We provide not only information about your reservation (e.g., checking in, checking out, using the Internet, streaming movies from Netflix, etc.), but also local attractions, restaurants, and cool, interesting local things to do. (Quite a few things tourists would never stumble upon!)

For each person over 5 years old in your party we'll provide you a Metro SmarTrip card with a few bucks on it. This will a) save you the time of having to purchase paper farecards; and b) save you the $1/trip paper farecard surcharge. (If you're arriving by plane at Reagan Airport and you expect to take the Metro to our apartment, I can mail the Metro cards to you in advance if that is helpful. I can also do this if you're arriving by train at Union Station.)

Bonus #1: You'll have unlimited 29-minute bike rides on the Capital Bikeshare bike-sharing program (there's a station directly across the street). We'll even throw in $5 free if you accidentally go above the 29-minute rides (and we get charged). (Tip: Plot your route so that you check-in your bike before 29 minutes... and then check-out the same bike and start again!)

Bonus #2: If you happen to be in the apartment on a Saturday or a Sunday, enjoy home delivery of The Washington Post.

Bonus #3: If you stay 6 nights or longer, we'll give you the option of allowing our cleaning lady to do a cleaning session on the apartment, if you choose, free of charge for you.

Why you should feel confident staying with us:

*Our cleaning lady earns a fair wage (above the DC Living Wage Rate) and is paid through a payroll system which manages all taxes.

*Whenever possible, we try to use environmentally-friendly cleaning supplies.

*The electricity consumed in the apartment is generated through local wind farms.

*100% of the carbon dioxide emitted by our natural gas usage (both our house and the apartment) will be neutralized through carbon offsets from projects located in Maryland and Virginia

*We welcome pets, and kids!

*We allow you to compost, if you wish!

*We use the same high-quality air filters for the apartment as we do for our house: Filtrete™ Elite Allergen Extra Reduction Filter, Healthy Living 2400.

*Just-in-Time check-in: This means that I can text you the minute our cleaning person is done cleaning to allow you to check in. Just ask for this in advance.

About Kelly Vielmo

Hi everyone,

My name is Kelly and I live in Washington, DC, with my husband and our three recently-adopted children. We live across the street from the Eastern Market Metro Station and rent out our downstairs apartment.

We've been renting our DC apartment (underneath our house) since March 2012; we've begun renting our WV cabins since Jan. 2013.

For tourists to DC, we have -- I have to admit! -- a pretty superb location in that you can be on the National Mall (the Smithsonian Museums) in less than 20 minutes. Historic Eastern Market is just a few blocks away.

My husband works for the federal government, and I work for a global consulting firm supporting the federal government on sustainability issues. We enjoy bbq'ing outside when the weather is nice, going to the park with the kids, and simply being parents.

Kelly Vielmo purchased this apartment in 2007

What makes this apartment unique

Here are a few unique benefits: 1) The Metro (subway) is directly across the street. You can save money during your stay by not renting a car and simply taking the Metro. If you have to travel a farther distance, take a cab. 2) With a fully-stocked kitchen, you can visit one of the three grocery stores nearby and cook your meals at home. Save money with every meal!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"It's hard to imagine a better location from which to explore DC. A beautiful home in a beautiful neighbourhood. Metro just across the road, plenty of restaurants around the corner. The apartment was perfect and had all the comforts of home. Communication throughout booking and pre checkin was the best I've experienced. I hope to be back with my family in the Fall."

Amazing location and owners!

  • 5 of 5

My two kids (ages 2 and 9) and I had an excellent stay at Kelly and Jack's apartment! It was the perfect size for us. The provided parking pass and SmarTrip subway cards made things really easy. The location was excellent as the subway is right across the street. The CVS at the corner is convenient as are the parks. They provide a great information book about the lodging and the area. Any questions were addressed immediately. I cannot wait to visit DC again and my first call for lodging will be to Kelly and Jack!"

Great location, great experience

  • 5 of 5

Awesome location! Best in dc, in my opinion, when it comes to mobility, transportation options (even driving from this location is easy), restaurants, daily needs (market, pharmacy, dog park, just a block away), site seeing, etc. Kelly is an amazing host. Fully stocked kitchen, everything you could ever need. You can hear the family upstairs, but its a joyous sound. We enjoyed our stay immensely. Note: we stayed over the Christmas holiday in 2013 - I wasn't able to log the year 2013...so the "date of arrival" is incorrect by one year.

Loved it So Much I Came Back

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved the Eastern Market apartment. The apartment itself was lovely and cozy, and the proximity to the Metro was stellar. Having the Eastern Market, 8th Street restaurants and stores, two playgrounds and all the other places within walking distance was wonderful. Our children absolutely enjoyed the freedom of not being strapped in to a carseat, and we almost forgot to see all the wonderful sights of Washington.

I returned solo as part of a business trip, extending my stay in part to enjoy more of the Eastern Market neighborhood.

Great place to stay in great location!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic!! We enjoyed our stay in this 1 br apt in Eastern Market. My fiance and I visited DC for a conference and site-seeing. The location was great, particularly being right across the street from the Eastern Market Metro Station and a Bike Station, a short walk to Eastern Market (a must do on the weekends), and a wide variety of quality restaurants. The Capitol and National Mall are just a bike ride away if biking is your thing (we personally loved biking and using the bikeshare system. We walked to the Capitol area a couple of times and walking was doable if you don't mind walking.) Apartment itself had everything we needed and comfortable bed. Having a washer and dryer is very nice. Hosts are helpful, prompt to answer emails and texts, friendly, and attentive to details. The bike pass and metro passes were a nice added bonus. We would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone visiting DC who is looking for a great deal in a great location.

Wonderful convenient place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a convenient, clean, friendly place to stay in the DC area, this is it! We totally enjoyed the friendliness and helpfulness of Kelly and Jack. The place is about a 2 minute walk to Eastern Market metro. The apartment itself is very comfortable, with all kinds of brochures available to browse. While we brought our own drinks and food, we appreciated that the kitchen was equipped with staples. The neighborhood was beautiful, and we felt safe at all times. There were many restaurants about a block away that we enjoyed. We would definitely stay there again if we were in the DC area. Thanks guys!
