Overview

Capitol Hill Apartment Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom apartment near all DC attractions and across the street from subway

Our newly-painted (no VOC paint!) 1-bedroom apartment can help you feel at home while visiting Washington, DC! With a full-kitchen and a location directly across the street from the Eastern Market Metro, consider yourself in the heart of Capitol Hill!

We have nearly 130 reviews. Please contact me to read them.

The Space

*Price already includes 14.5% DC Lodging Tax. The pre-tax price is $179/night.*

We have a 600-sq-foot, 1-br furnished, English basement apartment on Capitol Hill (Eastern Market) in Washington, DC. It has its own ingress (front door) and egress (back door) and is located beneath our Capitol Hill rowhome. We're a family of five: two adults and our three recently-adopted foster children, ages 4, 5, and 7. As we live above the apartment, you will hear us -- and we will likely hear you. It is city-living! (Our story was highlighted in Aug. 2012 in The Washington Post.)

We're situated on a residential street that mixes city-life with residential-life. We're less than 1 block from the Eastern Market Metro (you can see it from the front door!), and 1-4 blocks from numerous restaurants, bars, coffeeshops, etc. (on Pennsylvania Ave., SE as well as 8th Street SE, aka 'Barracks Row'). We're 7 blocks from the US Capitol and the Library of Congress; about 6 blocks from the Washington Navy Yard (ask about the 10% Active Duty / Retired Military discount we offer); about 12 blocks from Nationals Stadium; and about 9 blocks from the Folger Shakespeare Library. The National Mall (Smithsonian Museums) is easily accessible: it's either 4 Metro stops away (exiting at Smithsonian Station), or hopping on any 30s bus (our favorite).

This apartment has a Walk Score® of 91/100, Walkers' Paradise.

Capitol Hill really only has one hotel in this area: Capitol Hill Hotel. Check its prices to determine whether our apartment would be a good deal for you. (Interestingly, if you visit the website of that hotel, one of the pictures that it prominently displays on its website is a string of about 6 homes on our block -- the pink one on the far left is ours!)

Parking would be on-street parking but generally we're always able to find a spot on our block. If you request it, we can provide you a visitor's parking pass that will allow you to park without fear of being ticketed/towed. Our neighborhood in particular has quite restrictive parking restrictions unless you live here or have the aforementioned visitor's parking pass.

Additional perks that you'll find:

*fully-stocked kitchen -- cut your dining-out costs by cooking at home!

*beginning in mid-July 2014, wrap yourself up in our 100% cotton Kimpton Hotels thick and thirsty white terry Turkish bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths

*beginning in mid-July 2014, enjoy Westin Hotels' Heavenly Spa White Tea Aloe Travel Set, including White tea Aloe Shampoo, White Tea Aloe Conditioner, White Tea Aloe Body Lotion, and White Tea Aloe leaf-shared Bar Soap

*Keurig K-cup coffee maker, coffee maker, coffee grinder, and French press

*washer/dryer

*iron and ironing board

*cable television (29') with DVD player, including Roku and Hulu to watch streaming movies from Netflix

*wireless Internet

*some snacks provided

*some toiletries provided in case you forget yours!

*speaker set (with radio) for your iPhone

*iPhone, iPad and phone charging station

Our house (not this apartment) generates 68% of the house's energy through the 14 solar panels on our roof (one of the first solar installations on Capitol Hill!). The apartment has CFLs, a dual-flush toilet, Pella windows, and a Nest Learning Thermostat. Additionally, the electricity is sourced from local wind farms through Clean Currents. We're in the process of slowly phasing out our regular cleaning supplies for more environmentally-friendly products. Additionally, as DC can be hot and sticky and swampy in the summer, we have a mosquito service that comes every two weeks to spray for mosquitoes in our front yard and our back yard. We have the 'natural' treatment which consists of a garlic-based product that is safe for animals, kids, and plants.

For grocery stores, there is a 1) Yes Organic Market 2 blocks away; 2) Harris Teeter 7 blocks away; and 3) Safeway 10 blocks away. CVS, Starbucks, and Dunkin' Donuts are all within a 2-minute walk.

The apartment can conceivably sleep 6 people (but it's probably best for 4 or fewer): 2 on the QUEEN (this is new as of November 2014!) bed in the bedroom; 2 on the full/double pull-out sofa in the living room; and 2 on the queen blow-up air mattress (which would be set up in the living room). We also have a pack-and-play available if requested.

Pets are allowed. No smoking or incense, please.

When you make your reservation, I'll provide you online access to our detailed, 31-page 'Tips & Tricks' book. You'll also have a hardcopy of this available upon check-in. We provide not only information about your reservation (e.g., checking in, checking out, using the Internet, streaming movies from Netflix, etc.), but also local attractions, restaurants, and cool, interesting local things to do. (Quite a few things tourists would never stumble upon!)

For each person over 5 years old in your party we'll provide you a Metro SmarTrip card with a few bucks on it. This will a) save you the time of having to purchase paper farecards; and b) save you the $1/trip paper farecard surcharge. (If you're arriving by plane at Reagan Airport and you expect to take the Metro to our apartment, I can mail the Metro cards to you in advance if that is helpful. I can also do this if you're arriving by train at Union Station.)

Bonus #1: You'll have unlimited 29-minute bike rides on the Capital Bikeshare bike-sharing program (there's a station directly across the street). We'll even throw in $5 free if you accidentally go above the 29-minute rides (and we get charged). (Tip: Plot your route so that you check-in your bike before 29 minutes... and then check-out the same bike and start again!)

Bonus #2: If you happen to be in the apartment on a Saturday or a Sunday, enjoy home delivery of The Washington Post.

Bonus #3: If you stay 6 nights or longer, we'll give you the option of allowing our cleaning lady to do a cleaning session on the apartment, if you choose, free of charge for you.

Why you should feel confident staying with us:

*Your reservation cost already includes the 14.5% DC Lodging Tax. It is collected and submitted to the DC Office of Tax and Revenue on a monthly basis.

*Our cleaning lady earns a fair wage and is paid through a payroll system which manages all taxes.

*Whenever possible, we try to use environmentally-friendly cleaning supplies.

*The electricity consumed in the apartment is generated through local wind farms.

*We welcome pets, and kids!

Guest Access

You will have access to everything in the fully-furnished apartment beneath our house. You'll also have access to our front yard.

Interaction with Guests

One week prior to your arrival, I'll send you a detailed email with check-in instructions. On your day of arrival, I'll send you a text with reminder information. The day after check-in, I'll follow up to make sure everything's ok!

The Neighborhood

Eastern Market is a part of Capitol Hill that is a great mix of residential and great restaurants and bars. It's walker-friendly and within a 10-minute walk, there are nearly 20 restaurants available!

Getting around

The apartment is directly across the street from the Eastern Market Metro. Many guests who have cars simply leave their cars parked for their stay!

Other Things to Note

We are a family of five who live above the apartment. You will hear us, and we will hear you. That's the nature of city-living.

About Kelly Vielmo

Hi everyone,

My name is Kelly and I live in Washington, DC, with my husband and our three recently-adopted children. We live across the street from the Eastern Market Metro Station and rent out our downstairs apartment.

We've been renting our DC apartment (underneath our house) since March 2012; we've begun renting our WV cabins since Jan. 2013.

For tourists to DC, we have -- I have to admit! -- a pretty superb location in that you can be on the National Mall (the Smithsonian Museums) in less than 20 minutes. Historic Eastern Market is just a few blocks away.

My husband works for the federal government, and I work for a global consulting firm supporting the federal government on sustainability issues. We enjoy bbq'ing outside when the weather is nice, going to the park with the kids, and simply being parents.

Kelly Vielmo purchased this apartment in 2007

What makes this apartment unique

Here are a few unique benefits: 1) The Metro (subway) is directly across the street. You can save money during your stay by not renting a car and simply taking the Metro. If you have to travel a farther distance, take a cab. 2) With a fully-stocked kitchen, you can visit one of the three grocery stores nearby and cook your meals at home. Save money with every meal!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Kelly exceeded our expectations as a host. I stayed 7 nights with my 3 children and a nanny. Kelly sent me reminders leading up to the first night that were incredibly helpful (as traveling with 3 young kids can be somewhat chaotic). He also checked in on us frequently through email & text and offered many suggestions for family friendly sites & eats in D.C. The apartment was in a fantastic location- close to The Metro & Eastern Market, and morning runs through the city were much easier than I anticipated. The amenities provided were perfect for us and the washer & dryer were life-savers! The apartment was very homey, clean and organized. The Tips & Tricks Manual, available Metro cards lefts for us, Keurig coffees (thank you!!), and compost bin (will be doing this at home moving forward), were some of our most appreciated details. Oh! Kelly was standing outside the apartment when we arrived, and hearing my name after spending 9 days in NYC and a couple hours on a train with kids, brought welcome and relief. I would definitely recommend staying here in Kelly's apartment. This was our second airbnb experience & Kelly has raised the bar. It was beyond our expectations. You definitely don't get this experience in a hotel."

Great location, great hosts

  • 5 of 5
"Our hosts happened to be outside their home when we arrived and made us feel very welcome, also checked in via e-mail the next day and chatted us up whenever we crossed paths. The location is excellent. The neighborhood has a lot to offer. It is in a location that is central to seeing DC, with the metro stop on the next block and great proximity to the Capital and National Mall. Great restaurant options within walking distance. Enjoyed time at the table in the front yard."

Great apartment in a very special location

  • 5 of 5
Comfortable housing in a great part of DC. This convenient apartment is just steps from the Eastern Market Metro stop--great for sightseeing and for food shopping in the Market. The apartment is well designed and amazingly well equipped--there are, for example, several different ways you can make coffee. The hosts have paid a lot of attention to detail--the kitchen is well equipped, there are toiletries available and the medicine cabinet has basics like pain killers and bandages. Internet connection is strong and the full availability of Netflix is a big plus. Our one problem (the TV wasn't working) was solved within minutes of our contacting the hosts. The host's own write up mentions the apartment's one drawback: noise from upstairs. But it never lasted late so we had no trouble sleeping. We'll happily rent again."

Great place to stay in DC

  • 5 of 5
Kelly was very welcoming as we're his kids! We had an amazing stay at the apartment. We enjoyed the neighbourhood and were happy to discover how easy it was to walk back and forth to the East side of the Mall. The convenience of the Metro stop virtually across the street was also a plus. When we come back to DC we will definitely stay here again!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5
We felt like home when we stayed at Kelly's place. It's perfect in every aspect. The location, the Eastern Market and the convenient store, the Metro Station. Kelly even provides parking permit for your car and Metro Smarttrip Cards for you to use during stay. He's friendly and taking good care of the place, seeing from the details he laid out about his home. Only a kind loving person can I'll recommend it to my friends for sure. Thanks Kelly!

Best DC Spot for us!

  • 5 of 5
When I started planning our trip to DC, I knew we didn't want to stay in a hotel. I traveled with myself and my two daughters aged 9 and 11. When I stumbled upon this apartment I snatched it up for our Fall Trip. Unfortunately- our trip was at the same time as the government shutdown in October, and I had to reschedule our trip last-minute for the spring. Kelly was amazingly generous and helpful as we rescheduled not once, but twice due to a white house tour scheduled a day too early. When we arrived the apartment was spotless and perfect for what we needed. There is a CVS down the street and a Harris Teeter at the next metro stop- very easy and convenient- though it took more planning than loading up the car! We made so many great memories at that place and had such an excellent trip- by the end the girls were begging to stay another week. Kelly was an excellent host- very communicative and was five steps ahead of me- answering my questions before they'd even popped into my head. In short- I very highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great, central location in DC. You won't regret it!! :)
