Canine members of your family are welcome at Chocolate House, our vacation home set amongst the alpine woods of Tahoe Donner. Chocolate House was named for an unfortunate painting choice by prior owners (all brown walls and ceilings.) Newly repainted, and completely refurnished and recarpeted, the home is bright and airy. We carry on the chocolate tradition by always having chocolate available!
New beds and feather pillows ensure a wonderful night's sleep. Downstairs, one bedroom has a new queen bed and bunk beds, while the second bedroom contains a queen bed. The third downstairs bedroom with its sliding glass doors doubles as a play space; it has a new queen foldout sofa by American Leather. If your group is larger than 12, the airbed in the closet should help!
Upstairs, the master bedroom contains a queen bed, a single bunk, and a love seat sofa-sleeper. The kitchen, living room, and dining room have an open plan, facilitating conversation. Two large leather sofas in the living room provide a comfortable place to gather around the gas stove or the large TV. A large deck extends off the living area where guests can cook on the gas grill when weather permits.
In winter, the greenspace behind our house turns into a wonderful toboggan run. Snow forts, snow men, and snowball fights reign in the open lot next door.
Chocolate House is in Tahoe Donner on Alder Creek Road, which is the main route between Tahoe Donner and Highway 89. In winter, the location is a plus because Alder Creek is one of the first streets in Tahoe Donner plowed in the morning. Our short, level driveway makes it possible to get in and out of the garage as soon as the main road is plowed.
Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, and Boreal are all within 20-30 minutes drive, weather depending.
In summer, deer, raccoons, and other wildlife inhabit the backyard. Guests may also enjoy the trail along nearby Alder Creek, and numerous other trails throughout the neighborhood. We also provide guest passes to the Tahoe Donner amenities, and the house is near the horse ranch, swimming pools/hot tub/gym, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ski hill, and gold course.
We are a family of three, plus a Grandma who frequently travels with us. Jan works for the local gas and electric company, on energy efficiency, solar power, and electric vehicles. Richard is a computer engineer. Laurel is 11, and loves to travel. Grandma Cathy is a retired high school teacher who speaks French and Spanish, in addition to English.

When we went in search of a home in the Tahoe area, we kept thinking 'location, location, location.' We chose the Tahoe-Donner subdivision for three reasons: it is close to several major ski resorts; it is located in Truckee so that we could drop of skis, etc. on our way home; we had easy access to Interstate 80. We love the location. We especially love the fact that our roads are plowed early so that we can be on the slopes for the first powder.
The house was very nice. The pictures don't do it justice. Everyone in my group was extremely pleased. It snowed while we were there and it was beautiful. The kids had a great time in the back sledding on the hill. It was a small hill, but even the teenagers had fun. It was not too far from all the stores to get anything else we needed or eat out. We will definitely be going back in the future.
We have been fortunate to experience the Chocolate House in the winter and recently this summer and found both experiences highly enjoyable. The house is well-maintained, large, with big open spaces, lots of (really comfortable) beds and the kitchen has everything you need. We shopped at the huge Safeway on Donner Pass Rd and made all our meals at "home". We kept active with the easy access to mountain bike and hiking trails nearby, but we also biked along the Truckee River from Squaw Valley to Lake Tahoe, and rafted down the River on a hot day. We did find time to relax at the Chocolate House, watched World Cup Soccer on the giant TV and BBQ'd salmon then smores on the gas grill while appreciating the beautiful vista from the driveway. We lay on the balcony at night and marveled at the clear sky.
The owners were really easy to reach, were very responsive and accommodating. We hope to be back to enjoy this wonderful house in this glorious location.
Chocolate House was spacious and accommodating to our family snow weekend! We had several younger children who enjoyed playing behind the cabin making snowmen and sled runs! Driveway was very accessible too. Beautiful views and clean throughout!
House was clean. Felt comfortable. No smells. Lots of rooms, lots of space, lots of seats, beautiful view, nice property. Easy to manage and maintain.
My only complaint: There wasn't a guest book to sign.

Holiday rentals are $350 per night and require a two night stay. Holidays included are Memorial Day Weekend, 4th of July, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving.
The reservation is confirmed with a deposit of the first night's rent. The remaining rent/tax is due two weeks prior to occupancy. I accept both Master Card and Visa.

Payment is usually accepted in the quoted currency (USD) unless the currency and the amount is specifically agreed in advance with the owner / advertiser.
