This late 19th century farmhouse was totally and tastefully renovated in 1994. The old wood exterior was retained, but all modern amenities were brought inside, from floor heating to insulated glass and lots of closet space. Large bedrooms, huge open livings and fully equipped kitchens will welcome your group in a comfortable atmosphere. Families can spend time there together yet can each retreat in their part of the chalet. 2 woodburning fireplaces accompany fun evenings of family games or peaceful reading.

Just 4 minutes walk to convenient cogwheel train bringing you straight to the Champery telecabin to the slopes. The cogwheel train also passes by the center of Val d'Illiez village, from where the bus departs to the Les Crosets and Champoussin ski areas. All three are gates to the huge and affordable Portes du Soleil ski resort and Summer mountain biking paradise.

Should you need more than the village bakery and grocery store, this charming regional train also takes you down in 30 minutes to all shopping conveniences in Monthey.

About Gérard

We are Karen and Gerard, owners of 'Les Racines'. We both work for international companies and have been moving around quite a lot. After a few years of that, we felt the need to have a place to come back to, to center and reset our lives...and much later to retire. We set out to look for a chalet in the Val d'Illiez valley, the region where Gerard's family originates. Interestingly, where a Swiss originates can be traced to a family settlement many centuries ago and, due to today's mobility, may have nothing to do with where he/she was born nor lives!

We found the chalet in 92 and renovated it. For the reasons mentioned above, we gave it the name 'Les Racines' ('Roots')!

It has to be mentioned that, Karen being Californian, creature comfort in the place was a significantly driver of our thorough improvement efforts.

We love the place but, as could have been expected, our international travels did not slow down and we decided to rent out the chalet for holidays in our absence.

We wish we could be here more often, but know that the chalet is in the good hands of a small rental agency in the village.

We are always very happy to read the guest books: among kids' drawings of ski scenes, our renters recognize that it is a very special place, oozing a warm family atmosphere.

Why Gérard chose Val-d'Illiez

The treasure was found in 92: a 100-year old farm still with hay in the huge barn, on top of the stable and of 3 tiny rooms serving as kitchen and living quarters. Only one faucet delivered (cold) water. 2 wood ovens brought some confort in the previous owner's winter solitude. He had peacefully died of old age a couple of years before and his heirs had to live further up in the Rhône valley for work and health reasons.

After years of searching, we knew that this was it!

The chalet has a perfect South-East to South-West orientation and the valley at this height is neither too narrow -which could be oppressive- nor too wide -where you lose the feeling of being in the mountains. Note that both the whole valley and the commune in which the chalet sits are called 'Val d'Illiez'.

We are located 2km from the village center and on a 12'000m2 property, which guarantees no disturbance to (and from!) neighbors.

The chalet is also 500m away from 'Les Bains', a small and affordable mountain spa and wellness center.

A cute little regional cogwheel train stops at the bottom of the property, about 200m away from the chalet. Upwards, it goes to the end of the valley and wonderful ski or hikes. Downwards, it connects with the incomparable Swiss railway system and the World. Thus, if one has the patience and necessary psychological strength, everything can be done from 'Les Racines' without a car.

What makes this chalet unique

Enjoying your aperitif on the stone terrace with a fantastic view on the Dents du Midi mountain chain, a fondue in the large family kitchen, sweating it in the chalet sauna, reading a book by the fireplace or taking advantage of the multitude of activities in the region, you will fondly remember your vacation at 'Les Racines'

We found chalet Racines through a recommendation from someone who had stayed there. It was not obvious you could rent both parts of the chalet at the same time purely from the Internet. But once we confirmed they were both available, it was ideal, as my parents-in-law could have some of their own space upstairs, away from three boisterous under-fives. The views of the dents du midi from both parts of that chalet are stunning. In particular from the upper flat's sitting room with its high ceiling and balcony access. The whole chalet is well kitted out with plenty of space, a sauna, fireplaces with wood supplied, and fondue and raclette cookers! Skiing is fifteen minutes by car, bypassing all the holiday queues at Champery by going directly to Les Crosets. Great nursery slope for our beginner children who were Both on the blue runs by the end of the week. Wifi was reliable Bar for one day when Sylvie, the proactive, friendly estate agent who manages the property, immediately came to the chalet and sorted it out within minutes by providing a 3g dongle!



Beyond what one would normally expect. These touches made a real difference to our holiday.



So, great location, views, living space, all make for a great holiday. We strongly recommend it.

Charming and well located

Les Racines is a charming and perfectly situated chalet. We used it as a base for a family reunion and short ski trip with ages 2 months to 70 years and it was great for everyone. Some of us arrived and departed by train, transferring in Aigle to the nice local train that stops literally at the foot of a small hill from the Chalet. Others used the train to and from skiing at Champery. We enjoyed the thermal pool/spa that's at the bottom of the same hill, also walkable or a 3 minute drive. We also loved the good meal at the Hotel Communal in Val d'Illiez, a 5 minute drive away. The chalet living space and bedrooms are well laid out and nicely furnished, the bathrooms are modern, and the kitchen was a great gathering place. Wi-Fi worked for everyone. The hosts and the local manager were exceptionally helpful, flexible and gracious as our plans changed. One small tip to renters who need to pick up supplies en route: there's a huge Co-Op supermarket right off the highway in Monthey, about 15 minutes before the chalet, which includes a large wine/alcohol section. You might pick up paper napkins and paper towels while doing your shopping as these aren't provided.

A wonderful getaway!

What a beautifully decorated, tastefully designed, enormous chalet! The kitchen was big and well equipped, the balcony long and the yard spacious. We came with our two-year old son and found the area to be wonderful for much needed rest. The sound of the river stream in the valley bellow, mixed with occasional sounds of the cliché cowbells ringing on the hill opposite the chalet, provided a perfectly Swiss ambience with the backdrop of the Dents du Midi mountain range every morning. The earlier we went out, the better the view. The clouds came around noon every day, but the weather was still pleasant. There were many hiking trails and sites to explore. We would definitely highly recommend this place to our friends!

Tolles Chalet

Seit vielen Jahren verbringe ich immer wieder ein paar Tage in diesem Chalet. Die Ruhe, die Natur, das Chalet selber, einfach toll.
Auch die Jahreszeiten ohne Schnee sind empfehlenswert, sei es zum wandern oder spazieren. Ein Bad in der Therme nach einer Wanderung ist das Tüpfelchen auf i. Sehr gut erreichbar auch mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln.

Our chalet is located in quaint Val d'Illiez valley, 15 minutes from the highway. Val d'Illiez is at the foot of the Portes du Soleil ski area, offering over 600km of slopes across the Swiss and French Alps. Wonderful mountain lakes will dot Summer hikes and certified mountain guides will take you up some majestic peaks. You will be within less than an hour away from theme parks, waterfalls, caves, Lake Geneva, the Evian casion and golf, the Montreux Jazz Festival or the only Gruyere cheese and Cailler chocolate factories.

500 meters away from the chalet there is a full wellness spa which welcomes you after a day of sports.
