I am a 75 year old retired hospital consultant. My wife enjoys collecting sea shells and I am a 'beach nut' who enjoys body surfing. My wife says that the wave action on Hilton Head is perfect for children and old fogies like me. We have been to every major beach area in the USA . . . there is no place that can compare to Sea Pines Plantation! Gwen and Bob Vaughan live in Lutherville, Maryland.
Ten years ago we were captivated by Sea Pines Plantation, a well-planned gated community of 5000 acres on the southern portion of Hilton Head Island. We previously owned two condos on Sanibel Island where we enjoyed the shelling and biking, generally in broiling hot sun! However, the wave action here on Hilton Head is superior, and the 20 miles of bike paths within Sea Pines Plantation are wide and nicely tree-shaded (compared to Sanibel).
Our apartment is less than a five minute walk from Harbour Town, famous for its red and white lighthouse, marina with beautiful yachts, great shops and restaurants, and the center for many water-based activities.
The Sea Pines Beach Club is a short bike ride away. From April through Labor Day the Sea Pines Trolley provides free shuttle service between Harbourtown and the Beach Club, stopping at Racquet Club Villas along the way, every 20 minutes.
You can make a reservation for the Sunset Prime Rib and Dinner cruise on the Spirit of Harbour Town by calling (843) 363-9026. Guided Kayak Nature Tours, with close encounters with dolphins, can be reserved by calling (843) 671-4386. Dolphins can also be observed from zodiacs run out of Harbour Town by Enviro Tours of Hilton Head at (843) 671-4386. Harbour Town also has charter fishing boats and sailboats for rent.
Racquet Club is located perfectly for biking, at the intersection of Lighthouse Road and Plantation Drive! One bike path runs east and west along Lighthouse road, with Harbourtown to the west, and the Sea Pines Beach Club (and the Atlantic Ocean) to the east. Another bike path runs north and south along Plantation Drive, with the Lawton Stables and Forest Preserve to the north, and South Beach (with the Salty Dog Restaurant and outdoor bar and deck) to the south.
We enjoy sitting on our deck for coffee in the morning, watching golfers having trouble with their approach shots on this tough par 5 hole, seeing a great blue heron on the lagoon from our bedroom windows, and the short walk or bike ride to great restaurants and shopping nearby. The Lawton Stables within Sea Pines Plantation has horseback trails through the 500 acre Forest Preserve at the north end of Sea Pines Plantation.
During the summer months, Greg Russell performs most nights under a huge live oak tree in Harbour Town, singing favorites for kids of all ages, like 'Green Alligators and Long Neck Geese' and 'Is that a booger in the sugar, no it's not!'
The living room has an entertainment center with TV and DVD player with a large selection of DVDs for all ages, board games and books (take one, leave one). Each Bedroom also has a TV and DVD player
Children and adults can enjoy 'Alligator and Wildlife Tours' in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. You can book a tour in advance by calling (843) 686-5323.
Here is something new for young kids to enjoy: a short bike ride to the Lawton Stables in Sea Pines where there is a nice, free, petting zoo. As you wander around, a very friendly female deer (a doe!) named 'Cassie' will tag along and nudge you to visit each of the different animals' pens!
A little bonus: if anything is broken during your stay in our apartment, if you report it before checking out, it will be repaired at no cost to you! They handle your credit card deposit, keys on your arrival, turnover cleaning, and any problems which may arise during your stay.
