If you want a quintessential Portland experience, then this lovely yet comfortable home located in the Hawthorne District - one of Portland's most popular and charming neighborhoods - is for you. The house is perfect for a weekend getaway, a family vacation or a gathering of friends. It is also a thoughtfully appointed and comfortable home-away-from-home for business travelers and others needing an extended stay. The house has 'real beds' for up to 6 persons. Two more can be accommodated using the couch that converts to a firm platform double bed.

You will have an authentic Portland experience as you explore nearby popular eateries and bars, unique boutiques, welcoming coffee houses, neighborhood parks, and live theater, film and music venues -- all within easy walking distance. Portland's own New Seasons Market is a few blocks away on Hawthorne Blvd.

Beyond the Hawthorne District and surrounding neighborhoods, everything Portland has to offer is easily accessible via bicycle or Portland's renowned public transportation system. (You'll be close to two bus lines and, if you have a car, the house has an off-street parking space.)

If you prefer to stay close to home, you will find this house a wonderful place to relax. Original art is throughout. The big window seat is an inviting perch for reading or napping. So is the spacious couch in front of the fireplace. In the evenings, unwind in the paved patio/garden, make dinner in the fully equipped kitchen or on the Weber (charcoal) grill, then watch a favorite movie on the large HDTV. (Every movie you can imagine is available at nearby, world-famous Mike's Movie Madness.)

At day's end, snuggle in to a king-sized bed in the oasis-like master bedroom, or a queen in the 'Pendleton room' or 'Water room.'

About Elizabeth

I find joy in spending time with friends of all ages, photographing and writing about interesting people and places, collecting stories, cooking ethnic meals, hiking, riding my bike, traveling, and generally reveling in being alive.

Elizabeth purchased this townhome in 2006

Why Elizabeth chose Portland

This house was my home for over four years, during which time I fell head-over-heels in love with the Hawthorne neighborhood and its proximity to so much of what makes Portland amazing. I manage it with the help of my wonderful Portland neighbors.

Walkable Portland

  • 5 of 5

What a roomy and comfortable home! Giant beds with lots of pillows. Casual table to eat at in the kitchen and room for family gathering at the long dining table with a view of cozy fireplace. Deluxe digs! We didn't need a car. Walked and explored this vibrant neighborhood and used Radio Cab to get downtown.

Great PDX Home and location

  • 5 of 5

We rented this home because it had enough room for 3 families (6 adults and 2 babies). It was a beautifully maintained home. The owner made sure that everything was spelled out before we came, so that there were no misunderstandings. This is a 3 story home and if you can't do steps then I would advise against renting it. Loved the location, close to Hawthorne Street. We had our daughter's wedding so we were constantly in and out. This worked well for all of us because we didn't have to wait to do something with other family members because of transportation. With everything close by we walked to many of gatherings that were going on. This property is close to stores, restaurants and entertainment. So happy we chose to rent this home.

Fantastic home for our annual sisters' trip!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great house, very well appointed, and exactly as described in VBRO writeup. Three levels with bedrooms up and down and living space in the middle; perfect for our group of three sisters. The neighborhood is wonderful, less than a mile from Laurel Hurst Park, lovely for morning workouts. Far enough off Hawthorn to be quite, but close enough to walk to restaurants and shopping. The owner has hired the next door neighbor to manage the day-to-day issues, and these folks were just terrific. Helpful and very pleasant. One of our best experiences in the seven years we have been taking our annual sisters' trip.

Perfect SE PDX Home Base

  • 5 of 5

Such a great house in a quiet but near-to-everything SE Portland neighborhood. We rented this place as a couple with a small baby and my parents joined us for part of the stay. There was room (and privacy) for all, air conditioning on hot nights, and plenty of baby gear which was an amazing bonus. A well-equipped kitchen was a big plus since we ended up ordering take out nearly every night. Great books on the shelves and a nice porch to sit on for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. We definitely hope to stay here again! The owner and manager were both accommodating, friendly, and very easy to communicate with. An all-around great spot!

great Portland experience

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our stay in Portland with 3 teenagers. We even had a driveway and a garage something we can only dream of at home in Baltimore. But even if we did not have a car there is so much to see just in the Hawthorne neighborhood. WE walked to dinner and breakfast several times. Downtown was a short 3 mile drive. The house had everything we needed and was very comfortable and well equipped in every way. I never met the property manager but she was extremely helpful and went out of her way for us on several occasions including rescuing my kids when they were locked out. The only thing renters should know about the house is that there are a fair number of steps. I probably would not have even noticed this but my husband broke his ankle hiking the last day and the steps were a big challenge for him.

Great for families

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed here 2 times in one year. Once in May and once in November. We have 3 children, all under 5. Elizabeth and her friends were amazing. When we arrived the first time there was a pack and play, baby gates, a wagon, stroller, child potty, booster seats, toys, coloring books, absolutely everything we needed! It was a dream after a long day of travel from the other side of the country. My kids absolutely loved riding in the wagon to dinner on Hawthorne and it is a quick drive to Mt. Tabor park where the playground was fantastic. The kitchen is well stocked and it was nice to park in a garage in such a busy area. It was a great central location to get everywhere we needed to go for the graduation and subsequent wedding. Our other family members were so impressed that they want to stay at this home if they come back to visit! We will definitely be staying here any time we come to visit my sister! Definitely a great way to spend your vacation. There are a lot of stairs so it is not a great place for anyone with mobility issues, but other than that it is a great spot and the owner and her friends see to everything you need.
