We sailed to Hawaii from the South Pacific in 1991 and the Island welcomed us so much that we are still here today! We love to travel and explore new places preferably from a nice , home-like base. We used our travel experiences to create a welcoming home away from home for you.
We are woodworkers by trade and have included our expertise as well as our love for detail and beauty into our properties.
We love local food and cooking so our kitchen is well equipped.
We support sustainability- we have solar power ( with electric back up), we compost and recycle, we have herbs, nuts and fruit in out garden that we are happy to share with you.
We both meditate and Kerstin practices yoga. When we are on island we are happy to share our Yoga and meditation shala with our guests.
Kerstin Preyasi Exter purchased this cottage in 1998
We got word about this Macadamia orchard from friends who live next door while we were traveling. Since we loved layed-back North Kohala and had lived and fallen in love with Hawi Town already we made an offer sight unseen and proceeded to design and build our little piece of paradise that we now share with travelers.
We offer you a unique, beautiful, safe and welcoming place to relax. This is not just a vacation rental, this is a home!
I wanted to thank you again for a wonderful stay at the Hawi house - we enjoyed every aspect of it! The house really exceeded our expectations, it was super comfortable and felt like home right from the first day. I will definitely recommend it to friends and we will be back during our next trip to the island. I discovered so much more to see and do there - cant wait!
This is our 3rd stay at the Hawi cottage. As always, Kersten and Swarupo are great to deal with. We have driven down to the resort beaches, but this is the place to stay. All the comforts of home and more! The area is full of interesting things to do, or drive to the Kohala Beaches and enjoy the sun. This year we went down to the Lapahaki Historic Site. It doesn't look like much from the road, but it is a beautiful stop and well worth a visit. We also ate at Minnie's in Kaapau this year, the Ono plate was delicious!
We loved our stay in Hawi! The accommodations are clean, modern and comfortable. The house is full of many extras to make this truly feel like home away from home. Kersten has thoughtfully placed lovely throws to take the chill off on cool evenings, snorkeling gear and beach chairs were ours to use as well. We loved the French press for our morning coffee that we enjoyed on the pretty lanai. The cottage is very tastefully decorated and a lot of thought has gone into making guests feel welcome. We highly recommend! The bed is really comfy too!
My husband and I stayed at this Hawi cottage just this past week and it was absolutely fabulous. We happened upon this rental by accident as we scrambled to find a place to stay after booking flights and we were so pleased that we would stay here again in a heartbeat if we come back to the Big Island.
The cottage is beautifully maintained and a perfect relaxing and romantic getaway for two. Morning coffee on the lanai was my favourite part of the day and the turkeys and chickens provided plenty of entertainment. Don't be deterred by the fact there is no air conditioning; with the cottage being tucked away in the trees we found that it never got hot in the cottage; in fact, we found that in the evenings we put on pants and a sweater.
The bed was a little uncomfortable but not so much that it would deter us from staying again. We were also disappointed to find there was no BBQ but other than that, we would definitely recommend this vacation rental for anyone looking to stay off the beaten path and avoid the crowds of the more commercial and tourist filled locations on the island. Staying in Hawi was like sampling true island life and living like a local. It was fantastic.
The owner was away while we were there but another care taker came by to greet us the morning after we arrived and was available if we needed anything. She was also very respectful of our privacy and very friendly and polite. We didn't get to spend much time checking out the town of Hawi but we did pop into the local coffee shop and we both agreed they made the best chai tea / coffee lattes we have ever had. Definitely worth a stop if you are a coffee / tea drinker.
Loved the cottage and were so sad to leave. Can't wait to come back and stay again.
We can't say enough good things about this property. It was comfortable, quiet, private and absolutely lovely both inside and out. The owner and property manager were excellent to work with. It had everything we needed, and more! If you want to feel spoiled as well as experience 'real' Hawaii, this is the place for you.
We enjoyed the visits from wild pigs and turkeys along with the amazing array of birds. We spent our days whale watching at the various ocean parks and lookouts. The nearby state and national parks were great too. Gill's Seafood Lanai quickly became a favorite stop.
Private and well appointed retreat in Hawi residential area. It's perfectly located for us because of it's close drive to North Kohola beaches, hiking and horseback riding. It provides a respite from a day in the hot sun with it's comfy pune on the lani, cool night time temps. and the full kitchen is great for cooking up the best of the island's treats from local markets. Hosts are very helpful. Thank You! C&C
This cottage is quite clean and well furnished. It has lovely woodwork and cabinetry. The kitchen is well equipped. The hosts are welcoming and tell great stories about long sea voyages.
We spent most of our time on the large and comfortable lanai. There we met the local geckos and the flock of turkeys that wander by.
Hawi is a quiet town with a nice coffee shop, restaurants, and shops. Down the road a couple miles is a grocery store and there is a Farmer's Market on Saturday. Good snorkeling beaches are not far away.
