DO NOT RENT

The rental was a big disappointment for my family. The entire house was filthy and run down. All the furniture (inside and out) needed to replaced, as it was worn, dirty, uncomfortable, and broken. The plastic furniture outside was a joke and not what I expected while on vacation. I was looking forward to using the upper deck, but the awning mechanism was broken. It went unused. The beds (uncomfortable) and pillows were wrapped in plastic covers...not appealing in 90 degree weather. Fabric covers are easily washable and replacable. The kitchen was ill equipped. We had to purchase dish soap, ant spray and traps, cleaning products, paper towels, etc. the day we arrived. Previous homes that we have rented provided these amenities. Had the property description mentioned this, we would have packed our own products from home. The ground floor was so damp and smelled so bad, that it was used (for sleeping only) only two nights. The bathrooms had no hand soap or toilet paper either. Our greatest complaint was the walkway to the beach that was missing steps and had not been repaired prior to our rental. This posed a serious safety issue. Several people needed to be assisted just to get onto the beach. We even imposed on the neighbors and used their walkway. It is shameful that you actually charge a cleaning fee. We left the house cleaner when we left. One positive note, THE OUTDOOR SHOWER WAS GREAT!
Owner's Response: Wow- that is all I can say. Our contract states that we provide only bedspreads, blankets and pillows. We DO supply all the bathrooms with toilet paper to start the rental, as well as paper towels in the kitchen. We so not supply cleaning supplies, although there are often some left there by other renters. All of the beds are Kingsdown mattresses approximately 6 years old, and yes, they are covered by vinyl covers for the renter's protection. What he didn't mention was that they also have padded mattress covers on top of the vinyl covers. Ironically, the sofa in the living room was replaced in late June of 2012, a few weeks before his arrival. The cottage is older, built in 1945, so there are some things that are often not appealing to renters, that I have mentioned in the description on the website.
UPDATES for 2013- we are removing the awning-it is broken and not repairable. Kitchen table and chairs being replaced. New flooring is being placed in the middle floor. New paint. New refinished bathrooms in the middle and downstairs. Kitchen was remodeled in 2011. New bedding in all the bedrooms. Hopefully these updates will help resolve some of these issues that this renter complained about. We own other properties and a hotel in CB, and we are diligent about making repairs and replacing broken items if we are notified of them in a timely manner. Obviously we cannot please everyone. I think this review is quite harsh. I hope that as a future renter you will look at the other reviews in general. We have been renting this property for almost twenty years. We strive to make every rental an enjoyable one. Please note that this renter was here in July 2012 and submitted a review in Feb 2013.
