Mibu Machiya is located in the heart of Kyoto. If you are planning to go all over Kyoto, this house could be a very convenient and perfect base for your stay in Kyoto. All the major sightseeing spots are reachable within 5-15 minutes by walking or using public transportations. Also The house is just one street off of the biggest street in Kyoto 'shijyo-dori' so restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, drug stores, grocery store, post office, ATMs, train/bus stations etc can be found within a short walking distance. The house is completely renovated recently for our guests to be able to enjoy a very traditional atmosphere with all of the modern comforts of home.

Thank you for providing such a wonderful place for us to hang out at the end of the day. This house was perfect for us! It was exactly what we needed to fully experience the beauty of Japan. Convenience and comfort complete with all services. (including E-mail communications) Hope to return again someday.
This lovely traditional house in a quiet neighbourhood gave us (2 couples on holiday) an ideal place to relax after full days of sightseeing and exploring in Kyoto. Probably the best part about it is the location: it's away from the busy center and close enough to public transportation options (and we found both the busses and the underground to be useful) so everything is within easy reach. We did not make full use of the kitchen because there are just too many amazing restaurants to eat at, many of them to be found within a 10 minute walk from the home (around and behind Shijo station). This place is a excellent value compared to other places we looked at in the city. Highly recommended!
We stayed in this lovely traditional house in April, 2015. Fantastic experience to stay somewhere so authentic. Loved sleeping on the futons on Tatami floors, very comfortable. There were 4 adults and 2 children. Plenty of space and amenities for all. It is a little further out of town than we thought, but easy enough to reach everything of interest, close to the subway. Actually buses more convenient than trains in this city. Some great local restaurant options. Mimi was an excellent host answering all queries and requests
We stayed here with our 3 kids for 7 nights. We had a friend and her 2 kids come and stay for 2 nights too. The house is great- big and old but renovated really well. We loved the "real" experience with our kids as we came from new Zealand. We found the buses good. As per other reviews, the taxi found it really hard to get there- no idea where to go (we hit this quite a bit in Japan) but they rang the owner and she gave directions- awesome! When it was really windy it was quite noisy with the doors rattling but it goes with an old house like this. The bathrooms are outside which we didn't mind at all- very traditional but might be cold in winter. Tax is added to the price (8%) so factor this in and we had to do the rubbish and recycling ourselves which was o.k but would have been good to have this included when you are paying alot for the place. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this place to others. It is as convenient as I expect it gets in Kyoto as you are always travelling to the mountainous edges to see the really incredible sights. Excellent and comfortable; great heating and very helpful host in planning. Recommended to all.
We 6 adults, w our parents age 82, stayed here hapilly for 3 nites.
House is very spacious and very well prepared by Mimi-san.
We can experience both traditional and modern facility here.
Certainly we will come back
We were a group of 8 women aged 30s to 60s & we absolutely loved this house. We had plenty of space, 3 western style single beds with the rest futons on tatami mats. All beds were warm & comfortable. House was very clean & had everything we needed. Wifi never failed. The bathroom & laundry facilities are outside the house proper at the back, but this didn't bother us at all. The separate vanity units with mirrors (2) was convenient for such a large group of women. Likewise, the separate toilets (2), were conveniently separate from each of the bathrooms. One bathroom has a bath with shower, while the other has a shower only. Plenty of hot water. There was also a separate urinal. There is a lovely private garden at the back, along with the tea room which we didn't use. Once we got our bearings, we found it in a convenient location for catching trains, including the little train to Arashiyama. There's a convenience store (Lawsons) just a block away, on the corner of the major street that runs into the city centre/shopping district. To get there, our taxi driver had to phone the owner for directions, despite us having the address (little street). So, I suggest guests keep all details very handy when trying to get to the house & for when you travel outside it. We took photos on our phone of the streets at the intersection where the Lawsons store is on the main street, & found these were immediately recognised by taxi drivers. The owner was always prompt in replying to any queries I had in making the booking. We had no issues at all during our stay & our entire group loved the house. Highly recommended.
The location is very convenient (5-7 mins walk to 2 train stations). The Machiya is very big, so definitely enough for 4-6 pax. It was well equipped with a full kitchen, washer/dryer and all necessary amenities. The many bathrooms and vanities were great. However, the bathrooms being outside the main Machiya was tricky....just run!
Mimi was very responsive with all my enquiries. There was a slight problem during check-in...which we really couldn't tell if we were told ahead of time! The cleaners couldn't clean the place properly due to some plumbing issues but Mimi was fantastic. She emailed, called and sms-ed to alert us of this issue. We dropped our bags and the cleaners then did a thorough clean up.
I definitely will recommend this Machiya for a family or a group of 4-7 pax. As I write this review, I have already contacted the owner for my next trip.
The house is conveniently located in the center of Kyoto's all the major sightseeing spots such as Kiyomizudera, Kinkaku-ji, Gion District, Arashiyama District etc...
