For over thirty-five years, our family has enjoyed this classic family beach house, literally steps (about 250) from the Atlantic ocean. Built in the early 1900's, the house has been completely updated to today’s standards, yet maintains the feel and detail of the classic beach cottage our parents and grandparents may have enjoyed when they took the train from Savannah to Tybee Island “back in the day.”
The focal point of our home is its wrap around screened porch which winds around three sides of the house. You can sit on the swing and view the ocean in the distance or lie in the hammock and rock in the breeze. There are six different seating areas, to accommodate most any activity, breakfast to tea to lunch to cocktails to dinner; reading, to cards, to games to just hanging out and breathing in the salt air or enjoying an afternoon thunder storm. Some guests even move a mattress out to the porch to fall asleep to the sounds of the crashing surf.
Inside, upstairs, you’ll find three bedrooms (one king and two queens) and two full baths. Downstairs are two bedrooms (two double beds in one room & two twin trundles - can sleep four- in the other). Also downstairs are two “classic Tybee” shower rooms (our favorites). Please note that as with other vintage Tybee homes, the downstairs rooms are accessed via a staircase on the screened porch (which can be seen in the 'porch entry' photo below). While these rooms may be a bit too separated from Mom and Dad for small children, many adults and teens enjoy the extra privacy the lower level rooms provide.
The large, airy upstairs living area has a foldout couch for extra sleeping space. The kitchen is fully equipped to facilitate an intimate dinner or a shrimp feast for a crowd.
