Overview

Big Sur Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

This Warm, Cozy Vintage Trailer - a 1962 Pathfinder - will take you back in time. If you are adventurous but still enjoy the amenities of city life - you'll be right at home here. French press & good coffee, high thread count sheets, a pantry stocked with all the essentials and superb bathtub with stunning view will smooth your transition from city distraction to country peaceful.

I live OFF GRID and only get messages a few times a day, especially if I have guests - roughly morning noon and afternoon/ evening, so I may seem hard to reach if you don't know that....your patience is greatly appreciated. Check this- it's not the Hyatt and no-one staffs the desk because there isn't one.

This 1962 Pathfinder Trailer was beautifully maintained and has been gently handled. If you are looking for a unique romantic getaway - this place is it. 54 acres of secluded Big Sur beauty. The site is completely private ( and boy howdy do I mean PRIVATE! ) - your view is of the ocean and canyon and ridges. Hike the ridges and canyons, or actually RELAX unmolested by the digital world, in incredible Natural beauty and quietude. Some folks appreciate staying here while doing workshops at Esalen, my place being removed from the hurly-burly while still allowing easy access to their property. I am finding that folks catch up on sleep here, sometimes clocking a good ten plus hours of deep and unmolested restful rejuvenating sleep. I've got Fuchsias planted just outside the window, so that from first light there are hummingbirds a few inches from your head; doesn't mean you need to wake up, just that beauty is happening....

• Secluded - Quiet - Private

• Ocean & Mountain Views

• Located Across from Esalen

• Cast iron tub+outdoor shower with ocean view.

• Cascading creek lulls you to sleep.

• Pet, Kid & Alternative Lifestyle Friendly

• Minutes to Beach, Post Office, HWY One / Carmel / Monterey

• Star Gazing. Zero light pollution

You can find more pics on FBook by looking for Big Sur Cabin Renal.

This Vintage Trailer has been lovingly maintained - the original tiny bathroom has been removed and a spacious and luxurious Private Bath House a few paces away has been erected and outfitted with a standard toilet, big cast iron clawfoot tub (fits two!), outdoor shower, and redwood deck. Ahhhhh. All with Ocean and Mountain Views.

This location is also home to Big Sur Old Growth - a custom sawmill operation specializing in salvage harvest Old Growth Redwood. Check out the website for more info. The trailer is used for lumber buyers and other guests. When the trailer is not in use it is available to rent.

This property is private and completely and deliberately OFF THE GRID.

'Big Sur Cabin Rental' is a GREEN vacation rental property. Although it is completely Off the Grid, you can still enjoy every amenity that makes traveling a pleasure. I clean with simple non-chemical products. I line dry the linens and they smell fresh and wonderful. All my end is powered by solar, my computer, cel phone, everything. 21 years now...it's not hard, really.

Solar and propane powers the systems that give you electricity for charging your Ipod and grinding your coffee - cooking a meal and taking a hot bath or shower and heating the Trailer. It's clean, warm, dry and lovingly cared for. The kitchen is well equipped with quality cooking equipment like good, sharp knives and cast iron.I like to cook and have set it up for someone who also likes to cook. The pantry is well stocked with all the essentials, olive oils, sea salt, Balsamic and other vinegars, teas, organic Basmati rice, extra dark French roast coffee and coffee press, wine glasses etc...everything you'll need for a romantic getaway. Enjoy the night stars while cozying up in the high thread count sheets then in the morning relax to fresh ground coffee and fresh laid eggs ( I keep chickens and will share the eggs with you) and take in the beautiful OCEAN VIEW! Head over to my website for more photos.

Your paypal deposit will secure your reservation.

Namaste.

About Richard W.

25 plus year resident of Big Sur, local born and raised. World traveler, surfer(ex) and ocean enthusiast, student of life, adventurer,Horticulturist, Stone Mason, Solar and Hydro-electric expert, Off the Grid Developer. Dog owner. Excellent cook! My friends call me Bongo.

Why Richard W. chose Big Sur

I like quiet, I worship in the Church of Nature, don't want to see, hear or smell my neighbors. It's Natures world, I just live in it.

What makes this cottage unique

Fresh eggs from the healthy chickens I keep, privacy like no other place, quietude and Natural beauty. I'm the only one in the whole watershed, almost 3000 acres. As lovely as any State or National Park and completely PRIVATE! Hike anywhere you want, hell, naked if you want, I don't care and won't see you and you won't see me. Catch up on your sleep! Meet and reacquaint with your partner again!

Guestbook comments from the manager

I’d recommend this epic adventure for anyone who wants to have a fun experience like traveling abroad right here in the United States. We met Richard at the base of his expansive 54 acre property which overlooks the Eselan Institute and the mighty Pacific Ocean. He picked us, our dog, luggage, and cooler up in his Suzuki and we headed out for a short jeep ride stretching less than a mile. The view on the side of this jeep ride was more expansive than any view I have seen of Big Sur. It was more spacious and wonderous than the views from Nepenthe or Eselan. After a jeep ride which lasted only a couple of minutes we settled into a 1961 restored camping trailer parked near an amazing bath house. The view of the pristine canyon we were in and ocean view from there was breathtaking.

No justice in words alone

  • 5 of 5
I spent a few nights here earlier this year. It's taken that long for all that took place to settle in. I went out alone for a bit of relaxation away from the big city. I grew up on a ranch in south Texas so I need places like Richards Kingdom to stretch my limbs after the city has taken its toll. Richard has a solid set up. A quiet forest hike below all to yourself with a spring Creek running through (I stripped down and jumped in), an outdoor shower, a nice big tub for after your hikes, and he's even right across the street from eselyn (check spelling). In Big Sur you're sure to hear a familiar voice...your own, the voice of your heart. That voice that is masked often in the day to day garble of the city hustle and bustle. Richard took the time with his own two hands to gift God's green earth w a little slice of heaven nestled right in with His own. Next time I'll be sure to bring a gal :)

Quintessential Big Sur – Beautiful Beyond Words

  • 5 of 5
In celebration of our 15th anniversary, we spent four amazing nights here with our dog, but would have loved to stay much longer. We have camped/rented cabins in Big Sur before, but this is our new favorite (no people around, hooray!).
This rental has all of the natural diversity Big Sur is known for in one awesome location - soaring peaks, a pristine redwood forest, ocean views and a river rushing through the canyon floor. We were lucky to have the new moon, so the starry nights were incredible. During our stay, the bird and butterfly action was non-stop from dawn to dusk (then the bats would come out to feed). This place is extremely QUIET except for the sounds of the day and night creatures and of the creek rushing below.
The accommodations were very private, simple and relaxing both inside and out. Sight-lines around the backside of the trailer and bathhouse are blocked by trees and the mountain side. The 180-degree view faces out to the ocean and the other side of the canyon, which is forested and undeveloped (no houses). The owner’s home is farther up the canyon. I would guess that it is ¼ to ½ mile away. You can’t see it from your retreat. This setup translates to real privacy.
The mid-century camper is very functional and well-crafted. Lovely views from here, as well. The bed was comfortable with soft, CLEAN linens. The kitchen is small, but serviceable. Next time, I would not plan to use the oven because it was hard to clean up after use, but other than that, the kitchen worked out fine.
The bathhouse is super fun with jaw-dropping views in every direction. We really enjoyed the outside shower and the bathtub for two (during the day with views and at night with candles). The tub is so relaxing, don’t skip it! And there was always plenty of hot water available.
I think the hike through the redwood forest to the river at the bottom of the canyon is an absolute must! The trail is narrow, but well marked. It’s a shady, 15 minute hike (if you don’t stop to stare in awe at the massive old growth redwoods). The creek has a lot of boulders, so if you love the water and have nice weather, bring your water socks. The return requires a rapid ascent, so just take a few breaks if you’re winded. Also, at sunset, take a short hike back up the dirt road you came in on to enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the Pacific and whales (we saw many).
Come here with your favorite person (and dog) and enjoy this special retreat!

MAGICAL - A slice of heaven in Big Sur

  • 5 of 5
magical is the only word i can think of that even comes close to capturing how i feel about the three days my boyfriend and i spent here. i don't think either of us fully understood what richard meant when prior to arriving, we had asked about nearby activities, but now we both fully echo his sentiments: "but once you're here, why would you leave??" the journey there began by leaving our car at the bottom of the hill and taking richard's truck the ~0.5 mile up into the canyon and contributed to the sense of other-worldliness; it was as if we entered through the wardrobe into a narnia of sorts, where we were but guests in a kingdom ruled by hummingbirds.

for those who may have misgivings about staying in a "trailer", allow me to provide reassurance that there isn't any modern comfort you'll find lacking here--hot water, fridge, stove, propane grill, plenty of pots and pans, and an extremely comfortable queen sized futon bed with a warm down comforter. do note there's no internet, cell phone reception, or TV up here, which for me only contributed to the sense of deep rest i received during my stay. and while it seems odd to cite the bathhouse as one of my favorite parts about the property, both the outdoor shower and the indoor tub provide fantastic views of the forested canyon and ocean below--i literally saw humpback whales breaching while i was showering. in the evening, be sure to look upward for an unending canvas of twinkling stars.

there's a couple hikes you can do from the property itself, including going up to the canyon ridge for some even more fantastic views (wear long pants, as there's a lot of shrubbery along the way). there's also a lookout point that's a 8 minute walk away with breathtakingly beautiful panoramic vistas of the coast--bring a bottle of wine to enjoy here.

i do recommend bringing up enough food for the duration of your stay (though the chickens on the property will likely provide enough fresh eggs for your enjoyment; you'll return the favor by feeding them your food scraps). we enjoyed al fresco brunches on the patio outside and romantic candlelight dinners inside the trailer. there really is no reason to leave, but if you do, the best of big sur's hiking, dining, and water sports are but a short drive away.

there hasn't been a day since i left a week ago that i haven't yearned to be back, and i look forward to returning someday soon. richard--thank you so much for sharing your place with us!

Big Sur as it used to be

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed here in mid-July 2014, not sure what to expect. It was all we hoped for: a sense of being remote, private and with great views. It is not easy to walk back to your car so bring plenty of food, drink, reading material and plan to stay put. We took a guitar and mandolin, fixed some mean cocktails and made our own music as the sun set and later under the stars.

Richard is highly intelligent and is very hopeful that guests are able to throttle back, commune with nature, and enjoy the special natural ambience of his hidden treasure. He'll fill you in on the flora and fauna, if asked, and get you properly settled in, then he respects your privacy.

The trailer is cozy, clean and well-stocked. You'll meet Richard's dog, and his "girls" the chickens and "Hero" the rooster. While the view of the sea is a treat, I found myself enchanted by the redwood groves, the canyons and steep verdant coastal mountains rising close by to above 4,000 ft. There is a creek running far below the trailer and you'll enjoy its refreshing sounds. On the way out Richard spotted a big pod of whales and we stopped and watched as he explained their habits. It was delightful.

This place is best for adventurous romantics, nature lovers and those seeking to "get away." It's Big Sur as it must have been fifty years ago...I loved it.

Serene and Unparalleled Vacation

  • 5 of 5
We had an unbelievably relaxing time staying at Richard's property. The description of the trailer and ocean-view were incredibly accurate but there are some things that just can't translate into a listing. We were blown away by the dramatic surroundings. This is a truly special place, and one I hope we plan to return to at later points in our life. I have highly recommended this retreat to friends and colleagues and will continue to sing it's praises. Our only regret was not spending longer than a couple of nights. We cooked several wonderful meals in and also ventured out to nearby dining spots. The accessibility to Highway 1 after dusk was no problem at all. We loved having to hike out to our car, for a short drive to dinner at nearby Post Ranch Inn. The accommodations were spotless, and accurately described. Richard couldn't have been more helpful in giving us a tour of the property. Do yourself a favor and book this spot immediately for a guaranteed memorable and gorgeous escape. Just make sure to allow a lot of time on your drive to check in on time. Cell service in Big Sur is really non-existent and you don't want to miss a single minute of this vacation because of traffic on Highway 1 .

I'm in love!

I'm in love!

It has been 2 days since my boyfriend and I left Richard's beautiful retreat and we have already mentioned many times about planning our next visit. Our 4 night getaway was much needed. We both work from home and like many people have trouble finding time for real quality time. Richards property is gorgeous beyond words. Without writing a 2 page review here, I will just say that it was a very special place. It has so much to give to the heart and soul. We initially booked it for 3 nights and on the night before we were supposed to check out, we decided to stay an additional night and I am so glad we did. The more time you get to spend out there, the better. It's a real retreat and like I said, we will definitely be back!

Oh and by the way, our dog was in a little heaven of her own! She was totally in her element!

Richard & his dog Piha were wonderful as well. Couldn't have asked for anything more, maybe just a couple more nights : )

Thank you Richard for all that you are doing!
