Why Dan and Lori Houle chose Ely

I have been in the Resort and Real Estate business for over 30 years and enjoyed every single day of wilderness travel.

What makes this lodge unique

Absolutlely one of the finest sunsets on the planet coupled with a end of the road setting give serenity filled property an ambience that can't nearly be explained by words. The unique 1928 craftsmanship and look of the property sends us back in time during all 4 seasons. Old fashion and good old times are the best for us and the fishing out front is some of the best. Long pontoon rides and seeing the kids swimming is the next best!

Gathering of our Clan

  • 5 of 5
My entire family had such a fabulous week. The weather was picture perfect... the lake, the house, the kitchen, the grill and the dining porch all added to our great week together. We had 15 people and were only inside in the evening and to cook. The rest of the time the lake called. The hill coming up from the lake kept us in shape from eating our wonderful food. The sunsets were breathtaking. You can tell from previous reviews that they have been steadily working on this place and are continuing to make improvements and updates which come along with an old rustic place. Thanks for letting us make your home ours for a week!

Wonderful View From This Private Cabin

  • 4 of 5
The first thing you notice when you arrive is the gorgeous view of the lake. The cabin is very rustic with a lot of history. However, along with an older lodge comes maintenance. We would recommend that with such a large place and a cleaning fee charged with the rental, a better cleaning crew would go through and thoroughly clean the cabin. A couple of issues came up during our visit that were addressed by the property owner however, a handbook on how to troubleshoot some of these issues or a tour of the property and a highlight of some of these potential issues would be beneficial. If you have a large group, the well water supply will be an issue. A guestbook with recommendations from previous guests would be useful. Since Burntside Lake is so large, a lake map would be helpful. The two 16 foot fishing boats do not come with motors and should be clarified in the description. Dan is very helpful in addressing these concerns and if the problems above are addressed, then this lodge is wonderful for a large group gathering.

Owner's Response: The issues are addressed as mentioned and we have a good supply of hot water however the well is limited but if handled properly the supplies last wonderfully. The cleaning crew is excellent and all guests are accomodated. As mentioned, our crew does a great job at addressing any concerns immediately. This beautiful lodge and its historic and authentic appeal is what our customers live for. Many wonderful groups and only one group with issues so far this summer! Unfortunately some people do not read their conract or the information on boats. We have two boats without the motors which can be rented which is standard in the industry. Many people bring their own motors to help on costs. Hope some happy campers that understand the northwoods lore and lure respond with their adventures on Burntside Lake. We are having a wonderful summer and hope for some fall trips in this incredible burntside property!.. Have a wonderful and please ask for referalls on this property and I can supply a list of past customers. This spring we upgraded and will continue to do so every year...Thanks again for all that stayed and enjoyed...

Three Stars for Burntside Camp

  • 3 of 5
Our host has his work cut out for him. This enormous property has great promise, but sadly, the building has been neglected. He has a real jewel here, with a wonderful, expansive beachfront and gorgeous views of the lake. Everyone was able to spread out and enjoy a myriad of activities, including kayaking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, etc.. This was essential because there is absolutely no soundproofing in the cabin. If you cleared your throat in the kitchen, you heard it throughout the house. Earplugs are an essential part of your boundary waters experience if you stay at Burnside Camp.

The cabin boasts a wonderful front porch, which is perfect for big, celebratory dinners and board games. All the windows open to allow for a near constant breeze from the lake (which also kept the bugs down) and made for very comfortable evenings. We had a fire almost every night down on the beach, and our host made sure we had plenty of wood.

Although we had a wonderful three week stay at Burntside Camp, we would not return unless certain issues were addressed, such as a wet, moldy bathroom on the main floor, trash littered throughout the property, (i.e. old boats, campers, sinks, etc.) and the entire cabin thoroughly cleaned. The cabin has tons of charm and is filled with memorabilia that provides a priceless view into the 1920's.

Amazing week, beautiful location, a few quirks

  • 4 of 5
We spent our extended family vacation here at Burntside Camp and had a blast - all 14 of us! Location! That is the first thing that really sells this place. As others have said, the lake is lovely: gin-clear, shallow enough for young children (including my 20 month toddler), while also having a few small islands just off the coast for great exploring for the bigger kids (and adults). Boats aplenty provided - for free (motor/gas is available for rent through Ely Lodging). Beautiful sunsets.

The cabin is a gem just waiting to be polished up! Already the owner has done a lot of improvements since the start of the summer, and he continued to address some of the issues mentioned by previous visitors (such as update the bunkhouse and add curtains). And the owner addressed a slew of other complaints we had upon our arrival.

The great news: the owner, and Ely Lodging, were very responsive. By the close of the third day, we had every issue addressed and corrected, including a new washing machine.

But... some of the problems upon our arrival were easy to avoid. Most frustrating had been a blatant lack of cleanliness to the home (inside/outside), which was addressed by Ely Lodging sending out another cleaning crew the next day. It made a significant difference. Also, several of the duvets appeared to be dirty (unwashed) and few of the beds were so old and "dirty" that we insisted they be changed out (and they were, with brand new beds!). One of the biggest issues was that the previous renters had dogs and dog hair was everywhere, including a couple of the beds.

Also, as others mentioned, there are a few quirks in the place: the upstairs bathroom has a lovely claw-foot tub, but the faucets is tricky and there isn't enough hot water to fill the tub to really enjoy a deep soak. Place needs a "Welcome book"! Some additional basic TLC would make this place amazing: repair the torn screens, keep bed duvets fresh and clean for each new set of guests; and ... Dan, please remove that DARN RV FROM THE DRIVEWAY!

My family and I loved our dinners on the long beautiful porch (and the table under the very old and dirty "protector" is stunningly beautiful! We enjoyed sitting by the fires and along the lake (thanks to Dan who brought us brand new chairs to enjoy while we were staying there). We loved the boats, we loved the lake. We loved hiking the hill behind the house, exploring the Dry Lake trails down the road.

Thanks, Dan, for sharing your home! We'd return.

Vintage Northwoods Lodge on Burntside Lake

  • 5 of 5
We have just returned from our week at this incredibly beautiful spot and we miss it already! The lake is perfectly clear and the sand soft (unlike any other beach in the northern area). The lake is shallow for a good distance making swimming for young children much easier. The fishing was good and we had a couple of really spectacular meals of northern and bass.

The lodge is wonderful - it looks the way a northwoods getaway ought to! It is built out of huge logs and sports a gorgeous granite fireplace. There is also a wonderful fromt porch tht is completely enclosed. It has a table for twelve and a smaller round oak table that can easily seat five. Perfect for family games as well as meals.

The lodge is being worked on for future rentals so there is some construction mess here and there. For example, there was a ladder leaning against the sleeping porch and my grandson was on the roof within five minutes of our arrival, much to our dismay. Also, the bunk house is not useable right now.
No switch plates on the electrical outlets is dangerous and shoud be addressed. We had one soggy bathroom (the only shower) for most of the time we were there, But when called, Ely Lodging was there in minutes to deal with it. It just took a few times to figure out what was wrong. And, really, it was a minor annoyance. What was notable, was the staff and owner and how they dealt with the problem - very nice, very efficient, and very professional. And meeting the owner was a blast as he had lots of stories about the place and is a great guy to boot!
(More information about the appliances and the upstairs tub would have been welcome. They all have their qurks. A little note in the kitchen for arrivals would tak care of this.)

Ely is a fun town with much to do in it. There are both the Wolf Center and the Bear Center and I highly recommend both. The Doroty Moltor museum is at the edge of town and is well worth visiting.
Ely has lots of stores and restaurants. (We really enjoyed Cobweb Antiques and the Chocalate Moose).

All in all, we loved every minute of our stay, little problems were just that - little. The extraordinary beauty of the location and the 1920's charm of the lodge has won us over completely and we can't wait to return next year!

July 16-23, 2011 (Extreme heat for this area that week) ~ Beautiful weather all week!

  • 4 of 5
Burntside Lake has crystal clear water. The shallow entry made playing in the lake enjoyable for all ages! We could walk way, way out before becoming over adults heads. We could see bottom in 15-20 feet of water! We loved that we only had a 10-15 min. drive to Ely. We had fun shopping and eating there during the week. WE were able to access the BWCA just 25 minutes to the end of the road where we rented canoes to spend part of a day! We utilized the canoes and paddle boat on the property almost daily. The kitchen is very user friendly. The Living room very comfortable. The gas grill outside is large. The Management co. staff are extremely helpful and friendly as well as the owner himself! We did enjoy the Dish TV and Wi-Fi as well. The screened porch made for many great meals together (not more than 12 around the table though) and a super great game table for us all. Areas for consideration are: The Bunkhouse was not appealing to our family....it appears that it was not "ready" for visitors so we did not use it. A few screens are in need of repair. Because of the shallow well we needed to be carefull of how we scheduled showers....but we managed...a few showers were a little "icey" but it was extremely hot this week so not minded too much. It would be nice to have window coverings on the bathroom windows. We realize we are in the wilderness however there were a few of us who are more modest and prefer not to be seen.....in the evening/night time. The bathrooms are nice though! Look behind the claw foot bathtub to run the water...it took us a bit of investigating to find that out. Once found worked great! It may be a safety concern....but switchplates and outlets do not all have covers on them. We would recommend not more than 12 people stay unless the bunkhouse becomes accomodating. The beds are full size so it gets a little tight for 2. Overall we had a good week! The lake is FULL of small mouth bass....had a had time finding fish with any size but that was our first time fishing on this Lake! We wish you good luck in the future!
