A few great local restaurants are Cisco's cove which is right on the water at Pokei Bay and has live music and dancing on Friday Saturday and Sunday nights. It is fun, has great ocean views and is just 5 minutes down the road. It is a great place to also snorkel or paddle board. Coquito's is great island food and Tacos and More is good for Mexican.

I have been coming to Oahu for 42 years. The first time I stayed in Makaha was with my family in April 2010. I fell in love with Makaha and immediately started looking for a house. I purchased this home in August 2010. We have just finished remodeling this home from top to bottom. I fell in love with this house because it was on the ocean, had coastline and mountain views too from all major rooms of the house. It is on a quiet street and was right in between my two favorite beaches. The house is on a large 1/3 acre gated oceanfront lot on coral reefs. You can fish right out in front of our home. Makaha is a very relaxed community with some of the most beautiful beaches on the island and perfect weather. It is usually sunny and very laid back. The sea life there is amazing. Swim with giant sea turtles and brightly colored fish. Watch whales and dolphins from the house while enjoying a cocktail.
The Owner purchased this house in 2010
There are many beautiful ocean front homes in Makaha so I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. One benefit ours has is the placement of the house. It is further out so it has not only great ocean views but great coastline views as well. It is also basically in front of the Makaha Valley so we get a nice breeze that flows from the valley to the ocean so our home stays pretty comfortable even on hot days. It is also set back away from the street and it is gated so it is very private and quiet.
Island style with a lot of lava rock, one story so great for older people or young children, gated and sits closer to the ocean than most homes giving it an awesome coastline and mountain view as well as a great ocean view which not all ocean front homes have.
The house was spectacular!!!!. We walked in and were instantly amazed at the view. You walk in the house and all you see is this amazing ocean coastline and mountain view and your jaw drops. The nights were so peaceful. We spent hours star gazing. The sunsets were postcard perfect!. We spent hours every day snorkeling at the beach and saw tons of fish. We laughed at the snorkeling and dolphin boat excursions that came and parked out in the ocean. It is definitely a perfect place if you love the ocean and sea life. We saw dolphins, bright colorful fish, giant sea turtles every day. We also enjoyed hiking out to the point along the ocean to a animal preserve. There was so much to do in the area. We loved going to the local restaurants and to Kapolei and Ko'Olina which were just down the road. The house had everything we needed and we had all kinds of excursions planned but ended up spending most of our time at the house and beach because why leave perfection!. Our family had one of the best vacations ever and we highly recommend this house to anyone who likes tranquility, beautiful sunsets, beautiful beaches and cool ocean breezes! We give this house a Thumbs UP!!!! Thank you so much for a perfect vacation!!!
My husband and I wanted to take our daughters, sons-in-law and four grandchildren for a special trip on Oahu, primarily because we wanted to see Pearl Harbor. The house was perfect for our family, with 3 en-suite bedrooms and another bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen was wonderfully accommodating for both cooking and eating. We loved watching the kids play in the sandy backyard with a backdrop of gorgeous waves! With several outside tables, we enjoyed a memorable Thanksgiving feast in the backyard. It was a bit of a drive to Honolulu and Pearl Harbor but that gave us a chance to enjoy several other beaches along the way. The caretaker was wonderful and quickly answered questions we had. He even came over to take our family picture. We so enjoyed walking to the local beach and meeting the resident turtles. It was a perfect vacation. Make sure to visit Hanauma Bay for snorkeling. It was a about an hour drive and you must get there early, but after our long morning of snorkeling, we had dinner in Honolulu and watched the Christmas parade. It was a magical day and a vacation full of memories.
Ok so I started my Review title with WOW, that's because this home, it's location, the local town, grocery stores, and everything in between, was all that my wife and I could have hoped for. As seasoned travelers, we know what to expect...the unexpected right. As a master scuba diver for over 35yrs, I've seen plenty...never have I only to wade into an inlet such as (4) homes down from this place, and swim with sea turtle, or for that matter, lay in the sand next to them...AWESOME!
Additionally, we were a bit hesitant on renting in a local only part of Oahu...let me take that notion away. With a full kitchen, and all the pots and pans needed, we shopped for groceries daily. Let me just say, the locals in the markets, went out of their way to help us. In fact, everywhere we went in this sleepy town, we were met with open arms. We're born and raised San Diego locals that live near the beach, and lots of fun. Well let me tell you, if you're coming as a couple, or a family, this home and neighborhood feels at home from the first day....make sure to visit the family fun night club "Rest Camp" yes i said that correctly. We had more fun dancing there than just about any joint we've ever been in...crazy fun. The band on Fridays as I understand is there each week, and they rock!
Personally, I've been surfing since I was 13, however, the week we spent there, was what's called double overhead, and for me that's a bit too much. So, instead the wife and I went boogie boarding a stones throw away, where the surf was much much smaller. I mentioned boogie boarding, they have like 8 to choose from.
Oh, another awesome...nothing like plugging in your favorite yoga tape, opening the sliders, and doing yoga to the sound of waves crashing against the sea wall, and the 75degree temp is breezing its way in...way cool!
We would highly advise you to have a rental car. There's so much to see, and everything on the island is within an hour away. When we did want to get out, whether to town to shop or to Pipeline, Waimea Bay, and other locations, the drive was easy...but make sure to time it right, they like every place else in this world, has its commuter traffic, but it certainly wasn't Los Angeles rush hour.
Overall, it was just what we wanted, and all we could ask for. Well I could have used a pizza pan...what can I say, I'm full Italian, and I love to cook.
Aloha to you the reader. Mahalo to the owners who graciously rent their home.
We had a fantastic time at this beautiful, well located home. The house was a perfect fit for my husband, our 11 year old son, two 19 year old girls and myself. This lovely home is just a just a short walk down to the beautiful and uncrowded beach and a quick swim took us out to some of the best snorkeling we have ever seen. There were two lifeguards stationed at this kid friendly beach and the fish and turtle sightings were fantastic! We went fishing one day this was quick and easy too. The marina is just a 5 minute drive and our local captain was jolly and helpful. We caught 3 Ono (Wahoo) and were able to eat fresh sashimi and BBQ on our own private ocean front yard and deck area. We also did some exploring and hit almost every corner of this spectacular island though my favorite morning was the 5 minute jaunt up to the local Makaha golf course. The boys golfed while I took photos of the amazing landscape. The girls were right down the street relaxing on the beach. It was always lovely to get back to this peaceful area and enjoy the sights, sound and the spray of the surf. We hope to have the opportunity to come back and visit.
My fiancé and I rented this most fabulous get away before our big day next month just to relax, and I can't say enough how much we enjoyed it! The house sits right on the ocean. You can't get any closer to the beautiful water. It's breath taking when you walk in the front door. And, the waves crashing at night is extraordinary. I haven't had so much fun in Hawaii ever. We went to an organic farm and had dinner which was only 15 minutes away. The golf one mile from the house is like playing in Jurassic park. I noticed someone mentioned the traffic but it's not bad if you don't go at rush hour. Even then your driving by the ocean and can get anywhere in about an hour.
Karen and Jack our wonderful to speak to about where to hike and really see the sites. The house is like being at home only surrounded by breathtaking views of both mountains and ocean! We will be back.
We had the good fortune of staying in this lovely oceanfront home for four months. We felt very much at home. We stayed with our daughter-in-law who was a resident in Optometry at the Pearl Harbor Naval Hospital. It is better than the photos, nicely decorated with great open floor plan. Kitchen is well stocked. I bought a gas grill instead of using their charcoal one. Dining room table was too high same height as granite countertops. Futon sofas were uncomfortable. Newer washcloths & towels needed. My husband was in a wheelchair. He got around the inside of the house but despite renting a ramp, it was harder it get him in and out. The neighborhood was mostly quiet except for occasional loud parties with bonfires. Our neighbors across the street and next door were remodeling with a lot of hammering and noise. When you first walk into the front door, the ocean view is simply breathtaking. We enjoyed almost daily postcard perfect sunsets on the patio. We saw whales breaching at a distance, spinner dolphins and sea turtles, surfers, paddleboarders and scuba divers. Neighbors run and do daily walks on our road but there is no sidewalk. Locals would come to fish on the seawall behind our house. We felt safe and there is a gate to our compound. The gate needs to be kept closed because my son had his personal scuba diving equipment stolen from the carport. The patio furniture, chairs, beach equipment and scuba diving provided by the owner were old and rusty. The washer and dryer is outside in the carport but not connected to any hot water. The garage was not for our use. We rented the studio for guests but the door swells and windows leaked when it rained. The owners Jack and Karen were so easy to work with, very helpful and kind. Mahalo nui loa! Jack had great suggestions for local hiking. We had a problem with their home phone's ringer was broken and they bought us a new cordless phone. Also their caretaker Chris was helpful especially when our washer needed repair, friendly and had great suggestions. Always bad traffic! We're about a hour away to downtown Honolulu one way. The closest store is a 7-11 or Tamura's, the Waianae Store, Long's Drugs is about 15 minutes from the house down Farrington Highway which can get very busy, crowded and sometimes dangerous. We highly recommend you drive to Ko'Olina for Disney Aulani, the MonkeyPod and Roy's for great food or drive 25 minutes to shop in Kapolei where you can find Safeway, Costco, Foodland, Walmart etc.
Every few years we go back to Hawaii to see our ohana. This year we chose to rent a house because it is difficult for our cousins, aunties, and uncles to accommodate our large families. We, a total of 10, enjoyed our stay in this beautiful ocean front home. I must say, the pictures on this site do not do the house justice... It is even more spectacular. Our children enjoyed boogie boarding (supplied by the owners) almost daily. The sunsets are amazing from the patio as well as the star filled sky at night.
The owners were extremely courteous and helpful. Karen responded quickly to all my questions and even called to check up on us. Mahalo nui loa Karen.
I would definitely recommend staying here when you visit Hawaii Ne. (By the way, we were there for a month and felt right at home.)
Makaha is a great place to snorkel, surf, boogie board paddle board, swim, bike, hike or just relax. There are many great places to hike with the Makaha Valley mountains right behind you. Hike to Hawaiian Ancient Heiau only 5 minutes up Makaha Valley. Waianae Harbor is 5 minutes, Ko'Olina resort 15 minutes, Honolulu Zoo and Aquarium 45 minutes, Pearl Harbor 30 minutes, Honolulu airport is 30 minutes, Waikiki 50 minutes Dole Pineapple plantation 40 minutes and North Shore 50 minutes. Paradise Cove Luau is about 15 minutes away and is close to the new Disney Resort. The Polynesian Cultural Center is about an hour away and the Waimanalo Sea Life Park. They are both fun to visit and you can swim with the dolphins at the Waimanalo Sea Life Park.
