Very private summer home on Dyer Island with stunning views of Hurricane Sound and the White Islands.
Dyer Island is a small island on the west side of Vinalhaven, about 3 miles from town, and is connected to the larger island by a bridge. Our cottage is at the end of a short road and has complete privacy, a vista from its large front deck which is unparalleled, and 450 feet of private shoreline.
Relax on the deck and let all your cares and worries drift away. Watch the lobster boats go about their business, see the ferry and windjammers glide by in the distance, and perhaps catch glimpses of bald eagles and ospreys soaring overhead or seals poking their heads out of the waves. There is as much or as little to do as you desire. Get lost in a book or a game of Scrabble, wander down the short path between junipers and huckleberry bushes to the rocky shore and explore the tidepools. Buy some lobsters fresh off the boat at the Lobster Co-op in town and cook up a simple feast. Several nature trails are within a half-mile of Dyer Island, and The Basin, a very special haven for wildlife, is a short kayak ride away.
The house has an open-plan first floor which is ideal for families and entertaining. The simple but fully equipped kitchen opens to the dining area, which then flows into the living room, where the freestanding fireplace keeps evenings cozy. The entire front of the house is a wall of full-size windows looking out to the ocean. The deck is a great place to relax during the day or have a cookout or lobster bake in the evening. Bedrooms are in the back of the house, with a queen and a double-twin bedroom on the first floor and a similar pair of bedrooms on the second floor. A 2nd floor balcony hallway overlooks the 1st floor living space. The bathroom, with tub and shower, is on the first floor, as is the laundry area.
Vinalhaven offers unspoiled natural beauty. Visit Lane's Island Preserve, nature and hiking trails maintained by the VH Land Trust, two public swimming quarries, where the fresh water is much warmer than the ocean's. Pack a picnic lunch and visit Brown's Head Lighthouse or Tip-Toe Mountain at the north end of the island. Downtown Vinalhaven offers a choice of restaurants and ice cream or coffee shops, retail stores, a beautiful recently renovated library, wonderful Historical Society Museum, excellent used bookstore, summertime concerts and special events. Local farmers bring their fresh produce to sell at downtown farmers markets a couple of times each week, and a Saturday morning flea market attracts all sorts of vendors.
Golf is available on neighboring North Haven, and kayaks and bikes can be rented downtown.
If you have your own boat, access to a deepwater mooring and dock privileges in a nearby cove can be arranged for a reasonable fee.

Our family has been spending summers on Dyer Island since the 1930s, when Grandpa Brown bought the entire 65-acre island. Our cottage was built in 1976 on one of the prettiest pieces of land on the island, overlooking Pease Cove and the smaller islands in Hurricane Sound.
