|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Location: Los Balcones neighborhood (adjacent to El Centro), San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Central Mexico, Mexico
Accommodations: 2 apartments, each sleeping 2, with bath, kitchen; gas, water, fireplace, electricity, washing machine, free wifi and basic cable TV included, garage available.
Many visitors to charming San Miguel de Allende come for the lively festivals, parties, concerts, and night life that is very abundant, while others fully enjoy these events but prefer to sleep close-by, within walking distance, in a quieter neighborhood a little nearer to nature and outdoor activities. We give you this option along with a choice to combine the two units if you are traveling with family or friends.
Located in the beautiful neighborhood of Los Balcones, just above the center of town, these two apartments each sleep two and each have their own clear character. For those who prefer an apartment on one level, there is a ground-floor apartment (#1) with wide windows for beautiful light which has a great room with a fully-equipped, Mexican-tiled kitchen, dining area and living room, plus a separate full bathroom, and a bedroom with a high boveda (Mexican vaulted) ceiling, topped with a skylight. Through the French doors of the bedroom is a private walled garden. The two-story casita (Apartment #2) has a fully equipped kitchen and dining area on the ground floor, with a loft for the spacious bedroom and sitting area and separate full bathroom. Views of the low mountains are visible through the windows.
There is street parking but also a secure one-car garage which you are free to use if no one else has asked for it, and maid service is included three times a week for both apartments. While one can walk into the center of town (El Centro), an alternative is a radio taxi that can be called for transportation. A taxi on the street would cost about US$3.00 and a radio taxi, double that.
When you’re ready to leave the apartments and explore the area, turn right and a ten minute walk downhill will take you the heart of the colonial town with all its restaurants, shopping, and excitement. Many people walk down and take a taxi back (San Miguel has many steep areas). Turn left instead, and 10-15 minutes walking in this direction will get you to the nature reserve of El Charco del Ingenio Botanical Gardens which has hiking and mountain bike trails through a spectacular canyon as well as many cacti and succulents from around central Mexico. Dedicated to environmental education, there is a Visitor Center and a giftshop which sells organic and handcrafted products, books and plants from the Botanical Garden's nursery, while the juice bar offers a variety of drinks and snacks. At certain times there are events such as bird-watching, full moon ceremonies, sweat lodge, guided walks, etc. The garden is open sunrise-sunset daily, and the conservatory 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is about $3 for adults. Another ten minutes (and a right turn) walk and you will arrive at a shopping mall with modern amenities such as a modern Soriana supermarket, an eight-screen movie theater, an Office Depot, a McDonald's, and an Italian coffee shop! A taxi back to the apartments should cost around 25 pesos ($2.50).
In the San Miguel area are many outdoor options including four-wheeling, rappelling, thermal springs, camping, hot-air ballooning, and ultra-light flying. Coyote Canyon Adventures can arrange many of these (tel: 52 415 154 4193). Several ranchos have horses for trail or paddock riding. Rancho La Loma has a riding school and carriage rides(tel: 52 415 103 1842).

Currently, I live in South East Asia, after living in Congo, Somalia, Cameroun, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Uzbekistan, and Senegal. Traveling, and living internationally, has been a life-time goal and there is still more to see. Slowly, I'm adding Asian paintings, photos, and fabrics from Asia to the decor of the apartments in SMA to share some of my memories with our guests. Mexico, however, has always had my heart and I'm delighted to share my home with others who want to explore this part of the world. It's wonderful to be close enough to relatives and friends in my home country, but still be an international environment. San Miguel is perfect for me and I hope for our guests, too!.

I chose to live in Los Balcones because it is quieter than El Centro with a nice view of the Botanical Gardens which will remain natural, without development. I like living closer to nature, yet near to the action of the center of town. This location makes it possible to walk into the center for concerts and restaurants or over to the big, open mall for movies, shopping, and a full supermarket.
