'sophisticated whimsey, contemporary tradition, functional art'

The above quote is the way I describe my handpainted decorative art furniture. Recently I realized that it perfectly describes my home as well. When I purchased the property, all who came to visit said it was meant for me.....truly an artist's magical home on a hilltop in the woods, complete with pool and tiki bar and a bomb for a weathervane.

I knew from the start that the property was so special that it was meant to be shared, which I've done with family, friends, and vacation travelers. In 2012 I took a break from vacation travel rentals to allow my 90-year-old mother to live in my home. She is now happily in assisted living, so recently I decided to offer the property again for vacation travel renters or familiy and friends of people in our community of Leiper's Fork.

The drive up a long, sometimes bumpy, gravel driveway in the shadow of the woods is an adventure in itself. My granddaughter, Annabelle, recently remarked, 'Suzy, are we in the forest?!' Well, the deer certainly think so; they frequent the driveway as much as I do.

The house is fairly simple from the front as it is built from a barn kit. Once inside the front door, the magic begins with a large handpainted armoire that looks like it was painted into the house. There are vaulted ceilings, posts and beams, light fixtures that look as though they are from a castle, a window seat with a zebra covered cushion, a stone fireplace with a 'fish' stone at its center, and antique wallpaper and tile in the kitchen.

Out the back door is more magic... a screened gazebo with a bomb weathervane and a curvy multi-level deck which ends with a pool and tiki bar. Recently added are deck rails built of bamboo and cedar from the property, a small kitchen porch that steps down to a sand-floored sitting area, a wooden deck/pavilion on top of the hill in the garden from which you can watch sunsets and sunrises. Oh, and there's a new outdoor shower!

Photos of the new additions will be posted when weather permits.

All this in a completely private setting in the woods. There are no curtains! There are trees to watch dance, birds to look at and use as alarm clocks, the hoot of owls, deer and turkey that roam freely.

As you can see, this is not your 'city' house even though it has all the conveniences, and it's 3 minutes from a grocery, liquor store, and restaurants, as well as 7 minutes to Franklin or Leiper's Fork. It's furnished with my personal belongings, including a sprinkling of handpainted furniture.

As guests, you'll have private use of the house....living room, dining room, kitchen, and half bath on the main floor; 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a double bed, as well as a full bath, on the 2nd floor. In addition, for use upon request, there is a small study on the main floor that has a daybed and a small built in shower. The decks and pool are for guests private use well.

When I have guests, I reside in an apartment in my barn which is down the hill from the house and which also houses a brand new workshop for my painting business. I may need to retrieve some supplies from the basement of the main house, but the basement has it's own private access.

Bring your sense of humor and your sense of wonder. Visit Franklin for it's history and wonderful downtown stores; visit Leiper's Fork for unique galleries and my furniture showroom. The community of Westhaven, a mile away, is thriving, with a nice choice of restaurants. And there is WONDERFUL live music all around!

About Suzanne Fitch

After owning retail stationery stores - 2 states/3 cities- for 23 years, I have 'retired' to focus solely on my Handpainted Decorative Art Furniture business. My furniture is represented in galleries nationally, as well as in my showroom in Leiper's Fork. I have a wonderful new studio/workshop in my barn on the property which provides a perfect setting for being creative. If you'd like to visit the studio and/or watch the process, just ask. There might even be the possibility of lessons.

Suzanne Fitch purchased this house in 2001

Why Suzanne Fitch chose Franklin

The property is my home which I purchased in 2001. In the winter of 2000, I visited Leiper's Fork for the first time. Even in the grey of winter, the land held its arms out to me. I rented a small house in the village of Leiper's Fork, traveled back and forth from Kentucky every weekend, and at the end of a year I decided to stay. My story is really that 'I came to Leiper's Fork for lunch and never went home.'

When I purchased my home, I said over and over that it was such a unique property that it was meant to be shared. I have done that with family and friends, and vacation travelers, too.

I entertain family and friends in my home, but I have residence in another structure on the property when I have rental guests. My rental guests have private use of the main house, although I may come and go to check the pool or to get supplies from the basement of the house which is accessed privately.

What makes this house unique

The house and property have such a wonderful story that it was featured in an article in the WilliamsonAM. You can read the article by going to my website's WORKSHOP page. There are lots of pictures there, and more information about my furniture business.

As far as the house goes, having a 'bomb' for a weathervane seems pretty unique as does the pool with tiki bar that sits in the midst of the woods. You can't come visit and not smile. One group of guests asked to borrow saws so they could cut down bamboo both to make things and to take home. I'm sure there will be other such stories.

Another benefit to the property is the location. While completely private on 11 acres......no curtains here, by the way....it is 3 minutes to a grocery/liquor store/restaurants, 7 minutes to Franklin, and 7 minutes to Leiper's Fork. The best of all worlds.

Cabin fit for an artist

  • 5 of 5

Suzanne was a GREAT host with a truly unique and amazing property. Completely secluded yet minutes from the treasures of Franklin and Leapers Fork. Surrounded by woods . . . relaxing and grilling poolside. . . we couldn't have spent a better long holiday weekend - could have stayed forever. The cabin is beautifully appointed with comfortable furnishings, antiques and Suzanne's hand painted treasures. Everywhere you look are items reflecting the history of the cabin. Suzanne made us feel completely at home the minute we topped the hill. We wouldn't hesitate a return trip and highly recommend.

The Perfect Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

My family absolutely loved staying in this secluded, magical home. The home itself has some very interesting details and history, but the location of the property and the privacy it provides topped even that! We were very happy with the convenience of Franklin and Lieper's Fork so took the opportunity to visit both. We even loved the stormy day where we ensconced ourselves inside the house and stayed snug and cozy. And last but certainly not least, our hostess was very kind and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. Thanks Suzanne!

Owner's Response: .....and I absolutely loved having you stay in my home!!! When I think of your visit, I remember Stacie completely wrapped in a blanket and snuggled on the sofa. And I remember Tate trying to talk me into letting him "DIVE" into the pool.....no way. Thanks to Mark for finding and choosing my property for your pre-move retreat. I think Savannah was the only family member to 'vocalize' any displeasure.......and that was as a result of being left behind in a crate when the rest of you went on outings. I'm sure I'll make it up to her when she realizes that she's the only pooch in her new neighborhood with handpainted bowls! I hope it works for you to come again sometime so I can visit with your happy family! Sincerely, Suzanne

Owner's Response: Nancy, As you know!... the visit by your group was as much a pleasure for me as it was for you. Not only did you fill my house up, at all hours, with the rhythm and melody of live music, you filled my whole property up with a combination of friendship, laughter, joy, and peace. I look forward to your next reunion!!!!! Fondly, Suzanne

Owner's Response: Thank YOU, Donna, for choosing 'my piece of paradise' for your stay. It was MY pleasure. My only disappointment was missing Elizabeth's competition; maybe next year. I'm 'cooking up' a little momento for you in my studio.....think black-white zebra and hot pink. Wish you were still here; the wall by the pool is solid pink with primroses and the magnolia is in full bloom. I look forward to staying in touch with you. Say hello to your family, Suzanne
