VICTORIAN COTTAGE IN QUAINT VILLAGE OF CAMDEN

Camden House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft with double bed, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Nestled at the base of Mt. Battie, one mile easy walk or bike ride to downtown Camden and one mile from public beach and boat launch on Megunticook Lake. Easy access to hiking trails for Mount Battie and Camden Hills State Park which surround this hillside home. Private yard with flower and herb gardens.

1880's Victorian Farmhouse completely renovated in 2007 with cherry floors and period decor with period furniture.

Enter through the front door into the sunroom which leads into the kitchen. To the left of the front door is a sitting area and formal parlor. The sitting area leads to the dining room, half bath, and a bedroom with twin bunk beds.

Upstairs is the the master bedroom with a queen size bed, a second bedroom with queen, two full bathrooms one with a jacuzzi tub, one with a claw-foot tub. A third bedroom with a full size bed completes the second floor.

Upstairs is an optional loft space with a double bed which can be used in the off season or on cool nights.

This Victorian Cottage overlooks the valley in which Rockport and Rockland rest. In the distance is the Camden Snowbowl, which is the only ski report on the east coast where you can ride the lift to the top to then turn around to view the Penobscot Bay.

Camden Hills Park surround the house and yard affording complete privacy; the spacious yard includes plenty of room for picnicking and lawn games in the evening. Pick fresh herbs from the garden to add to your feast cooked up in complete kitchen (everything you'll need to cook your meals and enjoy family time).

Hiking trails border the house and Mount Battie's famous lookout is literally directly above the house. Climb up to see as far as Mt. Desert Island and Monhegan and the expansive Penobscot Bay.

Visitors to the house claim that there is so much to do in the area. They have enjoyed hiking, biking, swimming and kayaking at the nearby beach and Meguntecook Lake, both within walking distance. Go sailing on a schooner in the harbor downtown, watch the ships come and go, lunch on a deck in a restaurant in town, go berry picking, hunt for moose and wildlife, visit a museum or one of the many, many lighthouses in the area. Take a two-hour trip to get to Acadia National Part to see the first sunrise in the U.S., hike the hundreds of miles of trails and carriage roads or go whale watching. Back home enjoy lobsters for every meal and shop in quaint shops and antique havens.

In the fall, enjoy the crisp nights and clear days and in the winter the snow! Rent cross country skis at Maine Sport and adventure into some of the most spectacular countryside you've ever seen-- all within a short distance of the house. Downhill ski or go tubing at Camden Snowbowl or stick around for February for the International Toboggan competition.

Children love the house because of its open yard and access to the mountain. Summer camp in the village offers sailing at the local egalitarian yacht club. Many a young sailer has called Camden home after spending a week or two plying its waters in a dinghy and sailing with new-found friends.

Festivals galore in the summer and fall months. Lobsters, schooners, and music. Opera houses are a thing of the present not past in Maine. Many offer some of the finest chamber music groups in the country for a summer night's entertainment. Blues fans love the Blues Festival in Rockland just a short drive away.

Come to Camden to enjoy life at its finest.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Debbie wrote to us in email about the cottage: Our family thoroughly enjoyed your house. The Snuggery, which is the loft bedroom with its own sitting room was a huge hit with our teenage granddaughter. The house was is excellent shape, attractive, an easy walk to town, private and cool and comfortable. The beds were comfortable and we really appreciated having air conditioning when the weather turned suddenly hot. Other members of the wedding party were in houses that were not air conditioned. They flocked to our house to enjoy cocktails in the cool comfort of the bright kitchen and elegant living room. What a treat.

We hope to be back to Maine again soon.

We are teachers in Maryland who fell in love with Camden when our son was young and we visited Camden Harbor while cruising in our old wooden Egg Harbor powerboat. What we discovered in Camden made its our favorite place in the world. For years we would travel north during the summer to live on our boat and enjoy the Maine coast. Our son learned to sail at the Camden Yacht Club where he grew from dinghy sailing to a sailing instructor over the years. Although we traveled to different schools to work, we always saw Camden as a place that could be home. When we retired in 2004 we bought Toad Hall to make our dream of Camden as home come true. The call of the classroom took us back to Maryland a few years ago, and also made Toad Hall available to others who want to enjoy Maine. Now that our son is grown, we can enjoy the summer months on our boat in Maine while others enjoy our beautiful home. We hope that you will take the time to see Camden and enjoy Toad Hall this year. We welcome you to the most beautiful place in the country.

Think of Graham's Wind in the Willows and you'll know where the nickname for this home, Toad Hall, comes from. Mr. Toad, who always had to have the best and the newest, would have loved our Toad Hall.

Charming, but Not Fancy

  • 4 of 5
Coming home from a week at Toad Hall with my family. Overall our stay was very nice. While this is an older home with lots of charm, in some ways it does show its age. The living room furniture could really use replacing, not to mention a better layout for tv watching. We weren't home much to watch tv, so this wasn't too much of an issue. A lot of the furnishings are older as well, and between that, the many large plants and other delicate nicknacks throughout the house I did worry about my 5 year old damaging something. Again, we weren't home enough for this to be a huge issue, but it is something to keep in mind.

There was plenty of bedrooms for everyone, and my daughter loved the bunk beds.

The house was very well equipped, particularly the kitchen. We also really enjoyed the hot tub, although it too was older and the pump almost annoyingly loud. The air conditioning turned out to be a godsend as somehow every day was significantly warmer than predicted. The landscaping is really lovely as well.

Overall, Toad Hall isn't terribly fancy, but it is more than serviceable with plenty of bedroom space in a very convenient location.

Owner's Response: Dear Holly,

Thank you so much for taking the time to compose a thoughtful and thorough review. Kristina and I remain committed to improving the experience for our clients. One of our objectives is to provide our guests with an experience that reflects the era and the character of the late 19th century, which remains so much of all that attracts folks to Maine today--- thus the Victorian furnishings that include authentic "high victorianna" brass beds, hardwood furniture and decoration. These items were purchased from the Camden Harbor Inn and all date from 1876. We attempted to mix these pieces with the modern sofas and ultra comfortable mattresses, and, as you mentioned, airconditioning. We also feel strongly about providng our guests with a Jacuzzi bath, and a hot tub, since sea side beaches are few. Finally, we want to assure you and others that we shall continue to refine our property with the express purpose of creating lovely and lasting memories.
