Newsflash!!! Verneuil-sur-Avre has been chosen as one of Michelin's '100 Plus Beaux Détours de France' for 2013. These are small villages that represent a deeply-rooted architectural/historical/gastronomic interest for those travelers seeking to spend time in quality French villages (population 2,000 to 20,000) known for their warm welcome and charm. I'm so pleased that our town has made the list, and you will see why when you choose to come to Verneuil-sur-Avre!
Our sweet country home is situated in the heart of cheese and apple country in Upper Normandy. Come to this well-preserved medieval town, only 115 km from Paris (1 hour via direct train from the Montparnasse station) and relax in the private walled garden, surrounded by hollyhocks, honeysuckle and lavender. A small fishpond adds to the zenlike atmosphere as you sunbathe on the terrace or the lawn. Full patio with everything you need to grill and dine outdoors. Inside you'll find three bedrooms upstairs; two with queen beds and one with two twin beds, one which has a pull-out trundle. 1,5 baths; upstairs is toilet with shower; downstairs is toilet/sink. Everything furnished tastefully and in fine French style. It's a wonderful home that has earned it's nickname 'La Maison Du Bonheur', or 'The House of Happiness.'
Well-equipped kitchen with quality finishes; gas stovetop, quiet dishwasher, oven, microwave. Split-beamed ceiling adds to the authentic country charm of the kitchen, which looks out over the garden. Pop over the the village farmer's market (held each Saturday on the main square; a five-minute walk from the house) and fill your basket with local cheeses, fruit and vegetables, fresh fish from neighborhing streams, regional ciders, calvados, wine and organic meats and poultry. Then come back and cook up a feast!
The house combines the best of country living (quiet and private) while being conveniently-situated within the village, so you are only a short walk down the lane to get to the bakery, the butcher's, the wine merchant and other splendid shops which serve the community. There is a cinema right down the street, in a renovated church. So while you have the benefits of being in fresh country air, you aren't far from a great cafe or a wonderful restaurant! You can also pick up English-language magazines at the local newsagents.
Looking for a less-expensive option to Parisian hotel prices? Many of our guests--especially those traveling with children--tell us they originally were planning to stay in Paris, but selected our home because of its proximity to the Capital and the space a three-bedroom home offered vs. a hotel room. All for a much-lower overall cost!!! Families appreciated being able to have their 'own space' at the end of a day of sight-seeing...children up in their beds and the grownups downstairs, enjoying a glass of local cider.
Close to Paris and Chartres; 1.5 by car to the D-Day beaches, chic Deauville, Mont St Michel and all the coast has to offer, Verneuil-sur-Avre is the perfect central location for exploring Normandy and restoring your energy. This storybook house will welcome you and the memories you create while discovering this exquisite region of France will last forever.

I am an American expatriate who has been living in France for over 25 years. I work for an American university, overseeing their Study Abroad program, where I welcome 200 students each year. Because of my work and my love for my adopted culture, I am a great resource when you will be planning your trip.
When searching for a vacation home, we wanted it to be near enough so anyone vacationing in Paris could jump on a train and explore the French countryside. This allows travelers to experience both the benefits of a big city such as Paris, as well as the unique beauty that is found in the French countryside without having to travel a long way. Verneuil-sur-Avre is easily reached by a short train ride, and my home is a ten-minute walk from the town's train station, so you don't need a car to access it. For those renting a car, it is an easy drive from Paris via the N12 (no tolls!) and takes 1.5 hours. I fell in love with this town the minute I saw it, and knew that it would be the ideal place to have a second home. We love this home and really like to see our guests first reactions when they open the garden gate and walk inside: 'Wow! I can see why you fell in love with this place!'
Love the private, walled garden and its fish pond with tinkling waterfall. The town's gothic church spire is a wonder, as are the Tour Grise and other monuments. Verneuil-sur-Avre is rich in cultural history and architectural beauty.
Well-regarded farmer's market in town square each Saturday, featuring regional products from local producers.
