The Schooner Coast House is located along the shore of Lake Michigan known as the Schooner Coast that runs from Manitowoc to Sturgeon Bay. 100 years ago, this coast was dominated by the beautiful ships known as “schooners.” One of those ships was known as the Rouse Simmons ( also known as the fabled “Christmas Tree Ship” ) whose captain Herman Schuenemann was born nearby in Algoma. Today Algoma is famous for its sport fishing.
With easy access to Door County and Green Bay, you have a lot of activities to choose from all year long. Nearby attractions include Von Stiehl Winery; Lambeau Field is approximately a 30 minute drive and the shrine of “Our Lady of Good Help” one of 12 sites worldwide and the only one in the United States recognized by the Vatican as a site visited by The Virgin Mary. (approximately 14 miles down K)
The house has 100 feet of private pebble beach with beautiful views of Lake Michigan. You can enjoy a quiet evening by a fire on the beach or relax on the spacious 16 x 48 foot deck.

There was a group of five of us that stayed at the Schooner House for a “girls weekend”. We enjoyed the accommodations and the location. Everything is just as it looks in the pictures other than the beach. The beach area was about 15-20 ft. It definitely could be longer if the area was cleared. It’s possible, because of the time of year, it is not kept cleared since there is less opportunity to use it. No algae issues during our stay. Everyone thought the beds were comfortable. The large deck and the view are the highlights of the Schooner House. Thankfully, we had portions of the weekend where we were able to sit out on the deck and enjoy the view, sun and the sound of the waves hitting the shore. Reminded us of being at the ocean. The chairs on the deck were cloth and very comfortable. We did not think the walk to the beach was long or that the neighbors were too close. It took less than a minute to walk to the beach. The water in the house did not smell. We also enjoyed the view from the living room and kitchen.
We explored Two Rivers, Kewaunee and Algoma. Our favorite spots were the von Stiehl Winery and the Flying Pig. Two Rivers happened to be having their Ethnic Festival, which was also enjoyable. On our way to Algoma, we had lunch at Late’s in Manitowoc. This is a local favorite according to my friend’s father who grew up in the area. We thought the burgers, perch sandwich and cheese curds were very good. During our stay we ate at Red’s, a very short drive north of the Schooner House. The food was good. It offered a variety of choices. We had breakfast at Kunkels Korner in Kewaunee and Dairy Dean’s Family Restaurant in Algoma. Both were very good. The pizza was okay from Algoma Pizza Bowl. The crust was a little cardboardy. It could be a result of us having it delivered. The service was good at all restaurants. Pizza Bowl normally does not deliver to the Schooner House but they accommodated our request. We were very surprised that all the restaurants were willing to provide separate checks. Many restaurants in Milwaukee seem to have a problem with that. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Schooner House to others looking to stay in the area.
Beautiful place on Lake MI. Beach themed home, plenty of room, great deck & big firepit on the pebble beach, gorgeous stargazing & amazing sunrises! It's a little walk to the beach but didn't bother us a bit! Our pup loved fetching sticks out of the lake!!
We stayed at the Schooner Coast house this past winter. It is spacious, clean, and has everything you need for a home away from home. The water, from what I could tell has a filtering system now. There was no smell and tasted great. We were pleasantly surprised as we expected the worse based on a previous review.
The house was very charming. The large back deck was wonderful for eating and enjoying the view--relaxing was hard to do as there is only hard plastic chairs to sit on. (a double hammock and hot tub would be great here!) The neighbors are close which isn't bad, we just enjoy a little more privacy. Something that is not noted any where or mentioned is the sink water can not be used for drinking or cooking (sulfur) home does have a water cooler but when we arrived it was empty and it took a day to get a full jug and as we are heavy water drinkers we were concerned of it being enough so we bought more at the local dollar store. We also found the lake to have algae issues--as in so bad we would not wade in and would only allow our dog to go in at the local beach in town (which has rules and times dogs are allowed, we chose to over look those and never had an issue) We felt for the price this home rental rate is there should be unlimited clean water and a full understanding exactly how small, hard to walk and because of the algae, useless the beach front really is. This place would be wonderful for someone who just wants to see the shoreline and the lake view.
This charming house has been updated and remodeled and yet keeps the charm of hardwood floors and arched doorways. The beds are comfortable and the kitchen is great to cook in. Everything is just as it looks in the photo and there is a large back yard between the elevated deck and the water. The only problem that we had was that the Lake Michigan water was so filled with algae and slime that swimming was impossible. We took our dog out to the water twice, she loves to swim, and had to give her a bath with the hose outside before even letting her up on the deck. If you don't plan to swim, this is a great house.
