I grew up on Lake Charlevoix and learned to sail with my father. I've spent my entire life sailing the great lakes and can advise you on the beat places to sail to in the area. I am a Coast Guard Licensed Captain with a 50 Ton rating. My twin sons also grew up on the lake and learned to sail with me from a very young age. One is now on a 110' Cutter with the US Coast Guard in
the Persian Gulf.
Rhett Lloyd purchased this boat in 2014
There is no better place to spend the summer than Charlevoix, Michigan and no better way to spend it than on a sailboat!
If you like the water, why not live on it for a week!
I was very surprised how nice the sailboat we chartered was. Very clean, well maintained and equipped. The owner did a great job getting us aboard and settled in so we felt right at home. The harbors and waters of this area is breathtaking. We'll be back again for more adventure on Zonie.
My partner and I sailed across Lake Michigan to Beaver Island in early September. We had a smooth sail thanks to the great charts on board and the well cut sails. Zonie was clean, comfortable and for 2 of us it had tons on room. The boat was spacious and fully equiped for all our needs. We made the prefect loaf of bread in the oven while sailing and found all the pots, pans and utensils we needed. The fish we bought at the local fish market in Charlevoix prepared on the boats grill provided an amazing meal we ate at the cockpit table. Everything was working well and maintained in great condition!
After dining on deck we took the dinghy out for a spin. It held us and our 2 new friends we met on the island with no problem.
Rhett was very thorough with making us feel comfortable with the boat and was easy to reach for any questions we had. He was knowlegable with every aspect of sailing and up on all the local sights. He is very friendly. It was a great experience and we'll be back for another sailing vacation.
Very nice boat, I rented the boat for 3days and 2 nights. There were 6 of us on board (3 couples). We found the boat had lots of room even with all the extra stuff we brought. Had a great time, looking to rent again next year. You can see my video of the charter on youtube by searching (ronjh28) sail to beaver island.
We had a great time on the Zonie. It is in remarkable shape, especially considering it was built in the '80s. It is great for 4-5 people, with a small kitchen on board and marine head/ shower on board.
Rhett was a pleasure to deal with during the booking process and when we had questions during our rental, he always called back immediately.
This is a great way to explore northern Michigan
We rented the Zonie Catalina 30 for a 2 days the first week of July 2011. I would highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys sailing. We had rented another boat 2 years ago from this owner and were very happy with that experience as well. The owner personally gave my sons and me a 2 hour familiarization and some additional training I requested regarding the operation of the boat and the area. (He also offers additional training if you are interested) He sailed with us for almost 8 miles showing us the various functions of the boat, motor, and sails. He was also very accommodating and flexible as to when and where we could pickup and return the boat. He was very easy to reach by phone and email. He even called on my cell to point out an eagle that he had spotted as we were returning the boat to him on our last day so we could share that experience with everyone on board. We have been a sailing family for years, but had never rented a 30 foot sailboat before, 28 foot had been the biggest. We found the Zonie to be in excellent shape cosmetically and mechanically. All of the sails, lines, rigging, and gear were in excellent condition. The engine ran flawlessly. We had very nice sailing conditions on the lake. Winds were typically light in the morning 5-8 knots, and would build to 10 - 15 knots by late afternoon, then would subside back to 5 to 10 knots by sunset. In the 48 hours that we rented the boat, we were able to take out several different guests and had up to 6 people sailing comfortably on the boat. We sailed off and on for about 12 hours each day, and were able to rent a very nice slip in town for $35.00. The lake where the boat is located is a great place to sail because it is a very large lake, yet it has many protected areas. I have recommended this boat to 3 of our friends (in hopes that they will invite us along) and would recommend it to anyone. We found it very easy to sail with the roller furling jib. I was able to sail it very comfortably in 10 knots of wind with just me and my 12 year old son. It was a relatively fast boat considering the cruiser design, we recorded a max speed of 7.2 knots on the GPS unit and could easily sustain 6+ knots. Next time we rent, we hope to sail out onto the big lake for the day and possibly sail over to a harbor a few hours away. Thank you again to the owner for helping to make it a wonderful experience for me and my family
