'Carapace' is the perfect beachfront cottage with white sandy beach right on the gorgeous bluish-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. In 2012 St George rated #4 on list of Top 10 Beaches by Dr. Beach. Expansive beachfront gulf views from living room, dining room, kitchen, master bedroom and sun deck. Great place to enjoy unspoiled beaches and gulf breezes. Take a short stroll down the uncrowded beach or sit at water's edge. It's 'Old Florida' the way it should be - a beautiful natural setting unblemished by crowds and highrise development. Just take a deep breath and relaaax.

The natural environment here still supports many plant and animal species you will enjoy seeing - blue,fiddler, and hermit crabs, many fish, dolphins, sea turtles, tarpon, manatee, eagles, osprey, and many other sea birds-snowy plovers, least terns. Eco-tours are available on the island for guided sight-seeing, if you like.

Watch beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the deck. As darkness falls, you are treated to a magnificient display of starry constellations without the distraction of bright city lights. Many nights you can see the deck lights from local shrimp boats on the horizon.

To support a sustainable healthy environment we participate in 'eco-lodging' practices at Carapace.

Great floor plan: Open living area and master bedroom open to beachside sun deck, covered parking, hot-and-cold outdoor shower, large picnic table and park style charcoal grill for family cookouts.

3 Br, 2ba with one king bed in MR w/ private bath, one double bed, two twins-these 2 bedrooms open onto central hall with shared bath, one queen sleeper sofa in living area - linens provided. Ideal for 2 - 6 guests, can accommodate 8. 3 TVs, 1 VCR, 1 Blu-Ray player, CD player, free WiFi. Equipped kitchen, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, initial stock of paper products provided.

One or two well behaved non-aggressive dogs are allowed. No cats please. Smoking is not allowed at Carapace.

This is a family oriented destination. No vacationing students or young adults ( 25yo) unaccompanied by a responsible parent or guardian. Not available for weddings or parties.

I retired and relocated to the forgotten coast in 1998. I was, and still am, enamored by the amazing natural environment here.

I love animals and have 3 'rescue' dogs. They are fantastic companions and love spending time at the beach house.

I have been vacationing here since 1975 and couldn't wait to live here fulltime. The area is a great place to live quietly and close to nature. The vistas are breathtaking and the people are friendly. You'll experience life at it's best here. The natural environment is just breathtaking. It's a globally significant hot-spot of biodiversity. Apalachicola Bay is one of the most productive estuaries in the northern hermishere. For bird watchers, there are 3 flyways through this area. You can still enjoy dark skies abundantly speckled with bright stars here. The mild climate is very enjoyable. I think it's just about as perfect a place as you could ask for. A nature-lover's paradise.

What makes this cottage unique

Carapace is the perfect place to relax and enjoy yourself. Its a great house for vacationing with your family, including the doggies. You can't beat the views, the climate, the food, the fishing, the eco tours. It's a great place to relax and rejuvenate the spirit.

    Carapace pet policy: 2 well-behaved canine pets are allowed. Bring your pet’s food and water bowls, bed, and toys along so he/she will feel more comfortable in new surroundings. Please do not allow your pet to get on “people” furniture and beds. If this is impossible to manage, please bring furniture covers to protect our upholstery and bed spreads. You will be responsible for any extra cleaning or repair of damage caused by your pet while at Carapace. Let us know as soon as possible if there is an accident and we need to make arrangements to get some extra work done for you after your stay. Our county (Franklin) requires by law that when in public areas your pet must be under your command (leash or voice) at all times and that you “clean up” after your pet.

DREAM VACATION

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Carapace. Everything was as we expected and then some! The house was very clean and comfortable, and the views were spectacular! The atmosphere was very relaxing and private. I'm missing the sound of the waves, and watching pelicans dive for their dinner. We saw families of dolphins swim by with the little ones jumping clear out of the water! We will definitely come back to Carapace, and we recommend it to everyone. The owner is extremely helpful and genuinely concerned about our comfort. The islanders as well as the vacationers always made us feel welcomed and comfortable. Besides the restaurants and shops on the island, East Point and Apalachicola offer full varied eateries and shops of interest for everyone.
"We walk the beach, we watch the waves, reluctantly we pack. We hate to leave, yet as we do, we know that we'll be back."

Great Oceanfront Rental

We had a great time visiting SGI and the Carapace. The house was very open and comfortable with a huge deck overlooking the beach. There is a gate on the deck so the doggies could stay out on the deck which was great. The kitchen was well stocked so we were able to do a lot of cooking during our stay. I would highly recommend staying at the Carapace. Thanks!

Wonderful turtle friendly cottage for families

We have visited St. George Island for over 25 years and this is one of our favorites. The house is well stocked and well taken care off. It isn't a luxurious estate, but a great place to spend time with your family and enjoy the beach, your family, and your dog if you brought one. The beds are comfortable and there is a nice picnic table below the house from which you can see the waves. The home is owned by a lovely lady who is a real supporter of the sea turtles who nest in the summer. She will respond to any problems you have quickly and kindly. There is a gate on the deck so that your pet can't escape which comes in handy for those who bring their dog.

We've rented a number of different beach houses and this was one of the best. We went in mid-May and it was very quiet and beautiful weather. No bugs yet either. We would highly recommend Carapace, especially in late spring or early summer.

Just what we needed!

We spoke with the owner before renting, and she was very nice and helpful. We stayed at Carapace March 26 - April 2. It was just perfect for us - 2 adults and our two golden retrievers. They loved the beach and so did we! When we arrived, the home was clean and fresh. Doors opening to the deck and the sea breeze were wonderful. Views of the gulf and the beach were spectacular. Dolphins swam in the water and entertained us every day. We saw osprey, pelicans, sea gulls, sandpipers and even a bald eagle. We could not believe how pet friendly everyone was. Even the restaurant in town, the Blue Parrot served our boys a bowl of water :-) It was just what we needed after a winter in Michigan. We would recommend it to anyone and would love to go back.
