We (along with two other couples) had the pleasure of staying at Ginger Powers' Rancho Authentico for a week. We arrived after dark from Liberia, and Ginger was there to greet us and show us around. When we woke up the next morning, we couldn't believe it -- breathtaking beach, sunshine galore, and all of the beach amenities you could want -- lounge chairs, towels, outdoor shower, it was fantastic. Photos don't do it justice. It's bigger and better than the photos (and the photos look really fabulous).
Before our trip, Ginger was very responsive on e-mail and helped us connect with local fruit/meat vendors who were able to deliver food before we arrived. There's a new gas range in the house that worked great, as did the blender for fruity cocktails.
The craziest thing about this place is how quiet and un-touristy Playa Garza is. Many days, we were the only people on the beach. We felt as though we had an entire cove to ourselves. There were several funky beach bars that we could walk to at night (again - NO crowds and amazing star gazing). Playa Giones is a short 10 minute car ride away for more restaurants and shops. And, you can catch a boat for a fishing trip right there on the beach. We did several excursions, but also entertained ourselves in the water by body surfing and boogie boarding. The waves at Garza are tame enough for recreational swimming -- occasionally, the waves were good enough for actual surfing. But Guiones and its big surf was so close, it's not a big deal to travel where you want. Plaza Garza is VERY clean. Clean beach, clean water, no signs of pollution, jelly fish, etc. It's a PERFECT beach!
We are still dreaming about this place and need to figure out when we can return. A couple of things we noted for future travelers: Bring ear plugs if road noise or high wind noise bothers you. We had a couple of very windy nights at the house with almonds/coconuts falling on the tin roof most of the night. Also, the house is right off the village road, and rush hour in Costa Rica is much earlier than in the U.S. (think, 5:30a.m.). Since the house is open-air, all of these sounds travel right into the house. Also, bring plenty of sunscreen if you don't want to fry (we ran out of sunscreen on the last day -- oops!).
Ginger -- We will be back!
Our family of 12 (6 kids aged between 13 and 7, 3 couples) spent Christmas at Playa Garza. The house was perfect for our needs: comfortable, friendly, a great beachfront garden with outdoor shower and unique direct access to a beautiful beach. I was nervous about the sleeping arrangements but it worked out perfectly: 4 girls slept in a room with 2 queen beds, the 2 boys slept on bunks adjacents to the living room, and then there were 3 rooms for the couples that included the owner’s apartment which had a balcony, TV, fabulous view of the ocean. The house has a lot of character, it is nicely decorated and is well appointed for cooking, and feeling at home. The bathrooms worked well, there was hot water, and were very nicely finished (2 full baths in the main house that we were sharing among 2 families of 5, and the apartment had its own bathroom).
Eliza and Greta the housekeepers were unbelievably helpful (I speak a bit of spanish), kept the house clean, prepared us some lunch and dinners and even prepared fish that my sister in law caught earlier in the day with Eliza's brother.
Before we arrived Ginger did the groceries for us, it is important to specify sizes as most items are purchased in large size. We did not run out of food! It was awesome, no shopping while we were there.
The location of the house is in the center of Garza, a fishing village of 100 people. The main road is right by the entrance and there are neighbors and ambient village noises. Across the street there is a small corner store, a church, a bar and a little place where you can get Vitamix made juices. So it was the real Costa Rican village experience, we loved it, we were not looking for seclusion in a golf course.
A 10 minutes drive away from there was the Nosara Yoga Institute, surfing at Playa Guyones with Agua Tibias (these guys took all 10 of us surfing everyday), zip lining with Miss Skynopy, and the exceptional Nosara Monkey Refuge (you need an appointment to see baby monkeys rescued by Brenda Bombard). Amazing, amazing vacation. To top it all, Ginger coordinated for us fireworks on Christmas day -- the most beautiful fireworks on the beach!
I had the wonderful opportunity to live in the house for over 3 delightful months for a much needed emotional and spiritual healing. I absolutely LOVED the place, the beach, the thunder and lightening storms, the local people. EVERYTHING. The food was delicious. The owners went beyond the call of duty to tend to my comfort and needs. I spent most of the time there alone, except for a local dog that adopted me and stole my heart. An amazing experience that I will NEVER EVER forget. Truly a visit to Paradise!!!!!! Every night as I fell asleep, the sound of the waves lapping the shore was a sweet lullaby that gently healed my soul. I long to return.
The very best way to vacation, we loved it. Our third visit, two with lots of kids and one without. It's great either way. We don't like resorts as much as this type of place. The house is very cool with its hardwood floors and teak beams.
The views are fantastic right from the living area, as the walls slide open. The views over the ocean through the palm trees just can't get any better.
The town of Garza is small and uncrowded, but just down the road is Nosara with restaurants and surf shops and yoga studios, etc. if that's what you desire.
The beach is beautiful and literally right in the back yard. You walk down the steps through the lawn and gardens along the stone path to the gate... and step onto the sand between palm trees.
It's a complete house with full kitchen, and the maid can answer questions so you never feel lost.
There's TV and wireless internet service too.
This part of Costa Rica is the most beautiful in my opinion, and the beaches and surfing are some of the best anywhere.
We've been to this house several times over the years and it has always been ready, the communication with the owner has been good, and everything has gone smoothly. That's worth a lot to me. And to have that combined with a great place to visit is perfect.
Spent 4 weeks at Garza went surfing everyday, what an amazing place. Right on the beach, just down the road from Nosara. Located a comfortable distance from many places. You have to see it to belive it, pictures can only begin to scratch the surface. I have been going to Costa Rica for years, and have been fortunate enough to see much of this wonderful country, this is a truely unique property on the beach. The owners provide a great service and quickly got us settled in. Tough place to leave. I will be back.
We have been home about a month and are still dreaming about our days at this beautiful home near Nosara, in a quiet little fishing village on what felt sometimes, like our own private bay!
We cannot say enough about our wonderful vacation at Rancho Powers! With 6 adults and 7 (yes 7!) girls ranging from 9-13, we were made to feel right at home and well taken care of. The food was amazing. We'd wake each day to the sound of birds, the waves and the smell of fresh coffee. Each meal was personally prepared, always served with fresh fruit, salads and the catch of the day, literally! One evening we feasted on lobster that had been pulled out of the bay that very afternoon! The house faces out to the ocean, where you walk through a lush, flowering garden to the sand. After a morning of surfing in nearby Nosara, we would return to the house where lunch and fresh margaritas were waiting, repeat this again in the evenings! The house was well appointed with enough room for all of us, and was always clean even with 13 pairs of sandy feet. We cannot say enough about Richard and Ginger who were the perfect hosts, making sure were all taken care of, whether it was taking us into town on the first day to rent surf boards, or surprising two of us one evening with a candle lit birthday dinner on the beach! Having lived in the area for 20+ years, they are a wealth of information for excursions, fishing, surfing or even getting a massage, which we enjoyed right there on their beach! We all miss the beautiful sunsets from the lounge chairs, snoozing in the hammocks, stargazing at night, watching the kids boogey boarding and surfing in front of house, the incredible food, and the warm reception our hosts provided us on a daily basis. We hope to make it back someday soon, as there are very few true little slices of paradise left, and Rancho Powers is definitely one of them.
