Ocean-View Big Sur Cabin

We had a great weekend at this property. The place is spacious, much larger than the "2 beds +" would lead you to believe. A wonderful "great room" was an excellent gathering place for our assembled family. I far prefer that to a dedicated dining room (although there is a small table/nook, no lg dining room table). The kids had "an awesome time" with lots of good hiding places for hide and seek in the house. The entire house is spectacularly laid out around window after window that frame memorable views of the Point Sur lighthouse, rock, and isthmus. The deck was similarly oriented. The GPS location given in another review makes finding the house a snap (otherwise, it would be a challenge, to be sure; do look at the "street level view" of that location to see some useful markers). Also, as noted elsewhere, the driveway is steep. But the house is handicap accessible after the driveway has been navigated (our nonagenarian did fine; loved the view). The location is not in the center of the Big Sur canyon/valley. But the price is appropriately reasonable, and you are a short drive (toward the south) from the heart of Big Sur canyon; we dined at Nepenthe one morning and considered Big Sur Bakery another. (Short, gorgeous drives). Furthermore, the kitchen worked well, so we took most meals there, spread out over the great room. The location also allows easy access to Garrapata park to the north. There is no hiking in the immediate vicinity of the house (i.e., you have to drive somewhere), but you are 10-15 min from the aforementioned two spots, and less than five minute from Bixby Bridge, where "the old coast road" is a pleasant walk that we've taken several times, including once this trip. We'll be going back for moderate sized extended family weekend getaways, without a doubt.

We rented this property as a getaway spot for a group of friends scattered in San Francisco and Los Angeles. We housed 8 very comfortably, with all the amenities we would have needed. The cabin is a 2BR, with 2 additional convertible beds and 2.5 baths. The front room is a "mud room" with a flat panel TV and sofa, which opens up to the driveway and the porch. Then you walk into the living room with a nice stone fireplace, sofa, and open flow into the kitchen. The first level has a fold-out sofa and TV in the den and a full bedroom behind. The loft upstairs has another den area, complete with TV and futon upstairs. The upstairs master has a huge bedroom, full bathroom, and porch complete with a HAMMOCK! We didn't realize this until the last day - but the hammock is hiding in the closet and is easily strung up on hooks on the upstairs patio.

The property management team was a joy to work with and were helpful in arranging or stay. The photos described the house well, but did not do it justice. There was a lot of natural wildlife around and some birds nests near the gutters resulted in a lot of bird poop, but, what else can you expect for such a diverse area of wilderness?

The views are the most incredible thing about this house. It is tucked away below Cabrillo highway perfectly situated between Carmel and Big Sur. From the porch you have breathtaking views of Point Sur, with very pristine beaches as they are a part of the Marine Reserve! We even heard sea lions barking from the shores below.
The stars at night are incredible - and the reflection on the water from the Lightstation is surreal. Loved every minute of being outside here.

We spent most of our time in the house, but did take the quick 10-minute drive to Big Sur. We stopped for snacks at the River Inn marketplace, got some ice cream, and headed to Julia Phieffer state beach. It gets busy on weekends, so we ended up walking the 2 miles to the beach, but it was such an enjoyable walk. We stopped at the River Inn again on to sit in the chairs in the river. On our next stay, we plan on getting day passes to their pool - they are available from the marketplace.

I've stayed at other cabin/camping sites in Big Sur and this house was so much more economical for our group. The only tiny downfall is the driveway is SO STEEP and curvy that my Civic Hybrid hardly made it back up with 3 girls and a loaded trunk!

Otherwise a PERFECT stay and will be returning.. with a different car ;)

We had a great time here! The cabin is well represented by the pictures and was ready for our arrival. Beautiful deck area and fantastic location - very hard to find the property at night, but as long as you follow the detailed directions you will be fine - you will pass it at least once because it is built onto a bluff with such subtlety and with such stunning views that you will be looking right past it when you drive by!

Property managers were very helpful in answering questions, and I have already recommended the property to two close friends. Cabin was well-outfitted with large brand new Sony Bravia TVs and blu-ray players in the nooks, and owner was kind enough to leave their Bose SoundDock for us to enjoy music in the Great Room. Did morning yoga on the deck, breakfast at the Big Sur Bakery, went hiking at Pfeiffer Falls (didn't have time to do Sykes Springs, but next time!), dinner at the restaurant at the Post Ranch Inn, and enjoyed a wonderful evening at the cabin itself with a panoramic view of the stars and sea.

Next time we'll be cooking dinner there as we don't see a point of leaving for dinner next time! Would bring some knives and perhaps pans for the oven as we want to roast a whole Prime Rib and the kitchen is stocked with pots and pans for the gas range but not intensive cooking. There is a charcoal grill and plenty of plates/glasses so that may be easier!
