ELEGANT AND SPACIOUS SHINGLE-STYLE COTTAGE WITH OCEAN VIEWS

Seal Harbor House Rental Photos and Description

9 bedrooms, 7 full bathrooms, sleeps 12-14

Westover is a beautiful shingle-style home completed in 1902. The architect was Grosvenor Atterbury. The grounds were laid out by renowned landscape architect Beatrix Farrand.

Westover offers spacious elegance and privacy amidst exceptional natural beauty, with wonderful views of ocean, islands and mountains. Seal Harbor and its beach and Acadia National Park are all a short walk away. Northeast Harbor, which offers shopping, a grocery store and restaurants, is 3 miles away. Bar Harbor, with its shopping, supermarket, restaurants, theatres, and arts and music festivals, is 8 miles away.

Westover provides a perfect setting for family and friend gatherings with enough space for everyone. Walks, hikes, biking, boating, shopping, restaurants and nature are all at your back door. Enjoy the lovely views and fresh Maine air while relaxing on our outdoor porch or curl up in front of the fire in the living room with your favorite book while enjoying the view out the picture window.

History: Westover was built between the Summer of 1901 and the Spring of 1902. The original owner was Edward Cushman Bodman, a grain merchant from New York. The architect was Grosvenor Atterbury of New York, who subsequently designed for John D. Rockefeller, Jr. the French Norman style gate lodge on Jordan Pond Road near the Jordan Pond House and the gatehouse that is near Lower Hadlock Pond in Northeast Harbor. Gardens and landscaping were designed by Beatrix Farrand who later designed the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Gardens in Seal Harbor. Additional information about the house can be found in Lydia Bodman Vandenbergh and Earle Shettleworth’s book entitled Revisting Seal Harbor and Acadia National Park, a copy of which can be found in the piano room.

Walks and Hikes: There are delightful walks right from the house and hikes nearby. A map and trail guide can be found at the left-hand end of the bookcase in the piano room. One of our favorites is to walk from the house to Hunter’s Beach in Seal Harbor for a picnic lunch. Another is to take two cars and leave one at the Jordan Pond parking lot, then to drive to the Bubble Pond parking lot (past the Bubbles) and walk up the trail that ascends the north slope of Pemetic, then over the summit and down the south slope trail to the Jordan Pond House for lemonade and popovers. Another that is especially good on a hot day is to walk along the carriage trail on the western side of Jordan Pond to the Deer Brook Trail and to climb the Deer Brook Trail to the top of Sargent Mountain, stopping on the way back down from the summit for a dip in the beautiful pond that is just off the Deer Brook Trail near the summit. There are several local gardens, as well as an annual garden club tour.

Boating: The island is beautiful from the water and so are the surrounding islands. We enjoy hiking across Baker’s Island to the “dance rocks” on the far side; picnics on either end of Black Island or in Valley Cove on Somes Sound or on Asa Island, which you are welcome to picnic on and which is located near Mackerel Cove on Swan’s Island. And of course there is the sailing. We enjoy watching the Internationals that race at 1:00 p.m. every Saturday and Monday under the auspices of the Northeast Harbor Fleet in Western way. If you have a child interested in sailing, you might look into the sailing classes at the Seal Harbor Yacht Club. The Seal Harbor Yacht Club is a private club, but I believe it is quite welcoming of new members. If interested you could inquire of either of the two instructors or let us know and we could inquire for you. The Northeast Fleet has an excellent sailing program as well.
