Photos and Description of the Burke vacation farmhouse rental
3 bedrooms, 1 bath, sleeps 6

Our 1800's farmhouse is located on the side of Burke Mountain, home to never-crowded Burke Mountain Ski Area and Burke Mountain Academy, training ground for a number of US Ski Team stand-outs. The house sits on Pinkham Road, which loops along one side of the mountain and forms a leg of Kingdom Trails, an internationally known and highly acclaimed mountain biking venue. Burke Mountain, in association with Kingdom Trails, provides lift service for bikers wishing to ride a number of challenging downhill trails during the summer months. Miles of private trails and Kingdom trails provide excellent cross country skiing and snowshoeing, some right from the farmhouse.

At the base of the mountain, quaint East Burke Village provides access to gas and groceries, as well as some of the Northeast Kingdom's finest take-out, casual and fine dining. Beautiful lakes Willoughby and Crystal and Island Pond are within a 30 minute drive. For convenience, I-91 is only 10 miles away.

About Jessi Hudson

The farmhouse and 140 +/- acres have been in my family for almost 100 years. It was owned first by my great grandparents. My grandfather lived there his entire life, before leaving it to my parents. My goal in life is to preserve the history of the farm and scenic beauty of the land and keep the property in the family. Renting the Farmhouse helps pay for those efforts.

Jessi Hudson purchased this farmhouse in 2008
Why Jessi Hudson chose Burke

I have always loved the rural character of our area. Recent improvements brought about by Burke Mountain and Kingdom Trails has made the entire East Burke area a destination for skiers and bikers. Our beautiful location is attractive to families, nature lovers and anyone wanting a peaceful, quiet setting still close to activities.

What makes this farmhouse unique

People who have stayed with us have pointed to the quaintness of the Farmhouse, the peace and quiet, mountain views and sunsets, as seen from the large covered porch or sitting around the fire pit, as reasons they have particularly loved staying at our Farmhouse.

Our rental is located in the heart of what is known as the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, an area untouched by major growth or sprawl. The area retains all its natural beauty and has none of the heavy traffic, malls and industrial growth common to more populated areas. Burke is a cute little village, home to Burke Mountain Ski Area and Kingdom Trails, a premier mountain biking and cross country skiing venue. The northeast Kingdom is home to several beautiful, clean lakes, great for swimming, fishing or canoeing and kayaking. There are many great restaurants scattered about. Catamount Arts, Burke Mountain and other organizations make available a number of concerts, music festivals, art exhibits and sports exhibitions. Burke is home to the Burke Mountain Sled Dog Dash each January; and national ski races are held at the mountain. The Northeast Kingdom is well known for hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, outstanding fall foliage and maple syrup production.

Notes: The farmhouse has been renovated to retain much of its original feel, including most of the wide board flooring and woodwork. Central hot air heating has been retained. The only exceptions to the original feel are that the kitchen has been fitted with a small breakfast bar; and the living room has been carpeted and furnished with a glass front gas stove/fireplace. The wide screen TV provides crystal clear reception of the four major networks plus a number of educational channels.

Week in foliage

We spent a week at the farmhouse and have not ever had a better time. Ken and Linda are terrific hosts and true Vermonters. We could not ask for a better place to stay from the quality of the house and its furnishings, its owners and its location. Close to anything you might need and as close to heaven as you can get. Walking down Pinkham Road is worth the trip by itself. We will be back!

Owner's Response: Paul and Katherine were a joy to have stay with us. They were eager to have us share our list of favorite restaurants and scenic rides, hikes and attractions that make our area so special. They made a point of telling us that they visited every place on our list! It's so rewarding to hear that visitors have had a great time during their stay at the Old Farmhouse.

Home away from home!

We couldn't have picked a better place even if we tried! Ken and Linda were the absolute best hosts and we can only echo previous comments that praise this little charmer. We travelled with 2 teenage girls who just loved being in the country yet only a 5 minute drive from town. Not to mention the fact that they didn't have to give up staying in touch with their friends as the place has full complimentary internet access. There are lots to do around, from hiking to going to the beach at nearby lakes. Ken and Linda were even kind enough to let us borrow their bikes for a day trip. This is a place where at night you leave your windows open and the only things you will hear are crickets and the birds in the morning. It's an absolutely immaculate property with a fabolous verandah over looking Mt. Burke. Great for that early morning coffee or the glass of wine in the evening. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone who wants to get away from the hustle bustle and relax at this most serene location.

The perfect home base for the Kingdom Trails

5 of 5

An old friend of mine and I had the pleasure of staying at the red farmhouse this past weekend. The photos of the property are accurate, but the experience and feeling you get upon arrival is so much more than any photo can show. The farmhouse sits on a hillside with expansive views of Burke Mountain, with other mountains visible way off in the distance if you are fortunate enough to have great weather as we were.

The farmhouse is perfectly cozy, with ample seating in the living room, comfortable beds, a fully equipped kitchen, and a gas powered fire stove that warms the bones after a long day riding the trails. Plenty of fresh towels available, fast reliable wireless internet, and a covered front porch that makes me wish I didn't live in the city. Shower was hot with good pressure, if a tad on the small side, but posed no problems for us. Extra bonus for the great Verizon cell phone service available on the property for contacting loved ones.

The icing on the cake proved to be the gracious hosts, Ken and Linda, who are about as kind a folk as one can meet. When we returned to the farmhouse after a day of riding the trails, Ken had a pile of fresh chopped firewood assembled next to the fire pit with a great bench beside it, and the grill all set up outside ready for our use. Linda dropping by to give us a few fresh baked maple cookies didn't hurt either.

Overall a fantastic weekend in a fantastic location. We will definitely be making this our first choice when returning to the Northeast Kingdom in the future.

Great place to stay, close to burke mtn and kingdom trails base area. Very clean and accommodating location with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The price is also very reasonable for whats included, compared to similar accommodations in the area.

Owner's Response: We derive great pleasure from receiving positive feedback from the diverse groups that have stayed at the Old Farmhouse, from family groups to die-hard bikers and skiers to girls getting away for a relaxing weekend. We present the Old Farmhouse as a destination, not just a place to spend the night. We keep our rates affordably low to make this an attractive alternative for enjoying the Burke experience.

The place was just perfect!! It is a large house that is most comfortable, very clean, well appointed, and above all, extremely charming. The location is amazing. The owner was very responsive to all of our requests and needs while we were there. He was very helpfull. We had a wonderful trip and we can't wait to return! We go mountain biking every year in East Burke and this is certainly my #1 place. Thanks again Ken! ;)
