$850 a week...$750 a week off season!! Enjoy your own private island get away! This 1.8 acre island in the middle of the Ossipee River is yours for a week or the entire summer. Drive across the sturdy cement bridge and feel your cares slip away. You can fish for Bass, kayack or canoe up to the Porter Covered Bridge, walk to the local donut shop or ice cream hut or attend an auction in the village of Kezar Falls.

This historic c. 1924 John Calvin Stevens cottage has original doors, woodwork and stained glass. Built for the local mill owner's family as a getaway, it still has a lot to offer. There are sweeping cathedral ceilings, a fireplace for ambiance and a wood cookstove in the kitchen. Have morning coffee in the cozy breakfast room overlooking the waterfalls. The modern kitchen has a microwave, coffee maker and all the dishes, pots and pans you will need. The large bath room has a separate tub and shower. There's one queen bed, one double bed, a sofa bed for 2, plus a blow up bed for company if you need it. Bring your own linens and towels or use ours; there's a laundrymat close by. Relax in the rockers for Happy Hour on the large screened porch or have a nightly campfire at the outside fireplace, fire wood provided. You may pick the tomatoes out front if they are ripe.

You can fish, swim and boat in the clean Ossipee River. And it is actually warm as it comes from Ossipee Lake! Bring your own kyack or use ours. On the north side of the island the sound of the waterfalls will lull you to sleep! On the south side you may see almost perfect reflections in the water although it does have a gentle current. Use our inner tubes and just float for hours, and the village church bells may wake you every morning. There is no beach or shallow entry for very young children.

There is very little TV reception so we over 200 DVDs and VCR tapes, I hope you like the oldies. We also have cards, puzzels and board games and an assortment of books. Outside is badmitten or horse shoes.

Enjoy a church supper nearby. Drive 4 miles to Cornish to visit 12 Antique shops. Fine dining are close by in picturesque Cornish village. The White Mountains and major outlet shopping in North Conway are 30 minutes away. Ocean beaches and Portland, Maine's largest city, are a 50 minute drive. LL Beans in Freeport is an hours drive. Come visit our island paradise! You'll want to return.

About Jim Hanscom and Linda Griffin

We are both local real estate brokers specializing in antique homes and homes with character. Jim also has a handyman business so he has done most of the repairs to this cottage. He took off 6 layers of linoleum and plywood to get back to the orignal wood floors in the kitchen. He took a small storage closet and added 2 large windows to create a breakfast room with a view of the waterfalls. We went to local auctions and found some antique furniture for this special cottage. We have really enjoyed our work weekends here and the more we were here the more we decided to keep and enjoy this property for a long time.

Jim Hanscom and Linda Griffin purchased this bungalow in 2009
Why Jim Hanscom and Linda Griffin chose Parsonsfield

I grew up in this village of Kezar Falls and used to ride my bike to this island for weekly Girl Scout meetings on the large front porch. My family now lives nearby in Cornish so it is a chance to reconnect with them. We also had a get together for my 45th high school class reunion here and had 35 visitors comfortably for a great evening of reminiscing. We even strung Christmas twinkle lights on the bridge railings. In the fall on a warm sunny October day we gave a suprise 60th Anniversary brunch for my mother and father and all their friends. It was alot of fun. This cottage was on a house tour as a fund raiser for the local historical society and we got great reviews!!

What makes this bungalow unique

We enjoy the peace and quiet...privacy and relaxation...warm water to swim in, fresh tomatoes at the door and a delightful place to entertain. At the end of the season we ended up with five bottles each of mustard and rellish because of all the friends who came for a cookout and brought things! The quiet, the privacy, the underlying hum of the waterfalls...a unique vacation!!!

Notes: This is a private island in the middle of a river. There is a bridge to the island. The local mill owner had a canal build to power his mill. This created an island and in 1924 had this cottage built as a get away. His daughter also taught piano and was a local girl scout leader. They had meetings at the cottage.

We absolutely loved staying here with our three kids (11, 11 and 9) and dogs. The owners are friendly and very helpful: on request, Linda provided us with a terrifically detailed description of the place and all the water around so we knew exactly what we were getting before we even committed, and Jim was there to meet us, having just mowed the lawn, with a tour that included things like the teaberry leaves growing that the kids could chew, tips for fire-starting, restaurant recommendations, where to find wifi, and local history. So much to do so close by, but we hardly wanted to leave the island. Got some amazing scores and met some swell people at the vintage shops in Cornish. Ate cheap fresh local food almost every night out on the porch followed by roasted marshmallows in the fire pit. The house is even more charming than the pictures; not luxe but a gorgeous period arts and crafts house with a story (they compiled a binder full of cuttings about the house's family and local history as well as what you need to know about staying there and area attractions), and all the appointments are very homey and comfortable. They had everything there we could have anticipated. In addition to the kayaks and inner tubes, there were pfd's, noodles and a raft the kids took into the river; there were two bikes on the porch we could use; fishing poles; several outdoor games (horseshoes and the like). We had the best time and hope to go again next year for even longer!

We had a great time staying in this cottage. It gives the impression of being entirely isolated because of the thick trees along the periphery of the island, and the sound of the waterfalls which entirely obscures the sound of the occasional traffic on the roads on the other side of the river. The island itself is lovely with both wooded areas and plenty of open space to play. We also made full use of the two kayaks that were provided. The cottage has all the comforts of home with a full kitchen, huge movie library, lots of varied paperbacks, plenty of towels and linens and comfortable beds.

Despite seeming to be isolated there is a small town within walking distance of the island, with a couple of cute shops, a coffee/doughnut shop, a small market and a post office. More complete shopping with a full grocery store and a pizza place with excellent lobster rolls is 4 miles away.

The location is very convenient to a couple really nice parks (we spent days at White Lake and Lake Wentworth) as well as to local attractions like Wildcat Mountain. Excellent hiking is within a half hour, and the ocean is about an hour's drive.

All in all we had a great time and hope to return.

I finally talked my dr. Into letting me take 8 days off with my dogs,,befor having open heart surgery,,the rental was dog friendly,,upon arrival we were enchanted by the archtecture,,inside the house was covered with cob webs and filled with dust, there was a layer of dust and grease on everything in the kitchen,,bathroom had mold and mildew ,,,we rented for 8 days and stayed 3,,I could not breathe,it was terrible ,poor layout top the. House,,evidently the owner had a family reunion for 40 people and left everything there dirty,,there was noplace to wash the lobster pot,so we bought a new one ,,the his is very dark also( I am covered with bruises, trying to find a working light,,I do not recommend this place if you have any health problems,or if you like to eat in a clean atmosphere

Owner's Response: We did not have a family reunion before he came. The cottage was rented the week before to a very nice family who loved the spot. We always clean in between tenants and everyone leaves our place in good order. This time we cleaned as usual but there was a lapse of 4 days before he arrived so yes cob webs do happen in cottages in Maine sometimes over night so there may have been one or two. But the camp was not dusty and moldy. It was also a very hot week and we have an air conditioner and 6 fans and he bought another fan and left it there as he said we didn’t have enough fans. We have an outside propane cooker with a large lobster pot right next to it, but he chose to buy a new lobster pot and again left it. After he left he complained that the kitchen was dark and he was right because he didn’t notice that there were under the counter lights that are turned on by a wall switch. If he had called us with this complaint we could have told him where to turn on the lights. Instead he bought a light and rigged it over the kitchen sink and again left it there. The bathroom was cleaned before he came and was not moldy and my husband had just put a new shower curtain liner in before he got there. He left coffee in the coffee pot, dirty dishes in the sink and there was dog hair every where. I spent a lot of time vacuuming up dog hair from the rugs. We don’t charge for cleaning but I wished we had this time. The dog also pushed out the screen in the front door and chewed on the molding. We told him if he had any problems to call us and we could come quickly as we are only ½ an hour away but he only called with complaints after he had left.

Enjoyed fishing and bird watching.

Unique and charming

The owners were so easy to deal with, via email and the two times I needed to call. The island bungalow was lovely and quite unique. The water surrounding the property added such interest to the stay. It was a roaring waterfall on the north side, which you could hear if you left the bedroom or nook windows open. It was a calm, peaceful river on the south side. As a photographer, there were so many opportunities for wonderful photos from the stained glass, to the charming bungalow, to the water and trees. This place really grew on us, and we were somewhat sad to leave. The negatives were the towels did smell like mildew, so we hung them outside for the day to use for a shower. The house is not secluded, being situated between three roads, but the leaves and the roar of the water almost allowed you to feel secluded. The lighting in the house is not bright, which is only a problem if you need bright light. I was glad that my child was 14, because it could certainly be a dangerous situation with a younger child being situated so closely to a very fast moving river and waterfalls with no barriers. The town was really nothing to speak of, but maybe in the summer it is more active. Also, Cornish is close and is an adorable place. All in all though, we did love it.
